After the phenomenal success of the cycle Eight Inventions for percussion instruments Op. 45, Kabeláč embarked upon another cycle at the request of the ensemble Les Percussions de Strasbourg – EIGHT RICERCARI (written in the years 1966–1967, with minor revisions from 1971). In this case, Kabeláč did not merely aim for a continuation of the previous cycle – he wanted to create a work of a different character, a new and distinctive composition; nor would he allow himself any repetition (in fact, each of Kabeláč’s symphonies is written for a different set of instruments). In Ricercari Kabeláč chiefly makes use of the specific qualities that percussion instruments offer the composer. Ricercari was written for one to six players and again employs Kabeláč’s new proportional notation. The autograph of the work is kept at the Czech Museum of Music in Prague. A copy of the piece was made privately during the composer’s lifetime which was itself duplicated to provide scores for all the ensembles who included this work in their repertoire. The current edition of the score, in practice also used for performance purposes, is therefore the first ever printed edition and corresponds both to the autograph and the meticulous copy made at the time and corrected by the composer.

It was written in the spring of 1875, when he had just experienced his first successes at the conductor's podium and had received a state arts scholarship. The score and parts were published by Bote and Bock, Berlin, in 1879. This Urtext edition is based on the composer's autograph score. It corrects mistakes found in the first edition and so, for the first time, the editor incorporates omitted passages from the autograph, marking them with Vi-de. I Puritani is the last work of Vincenzo Bellini: composed in nine months, from April 1834 to January 1835 (a gestation unusually long for that time), was performed for the first time in Paris, Théâtre Italien, 24 January 1835. During this period, the dramatic structure suffered radical transformations: initially structured in two acts, the work was divided into three acts just before the premiere, but on the eve of the first performance, and immediately after that, the excessive length of the title imposed the cut of three pieces and other minor sections. Simultaneously with the release for Paris, Bellini prepared a version designed for a planned exhibition for Naples at Teatro S. Carlo, whose protagonist had to be Maria Malibran and in which the part of Riccardo had to be supported by a tenor. The exhibition did not take place, as the score came late in Naples: the Neapolitan version was rediscovered and performed only in the eighties of the twentieth century. The new Critical Edition is based on the autograph, on the libretto of the first performance and on four manuscript copies produced in the context of the Théâtre Italien in the first months of life of the work, three of which contain autograph interventions (these sources are now kept at the Biblioteca Comunale in Palermo, at the Museo Civico Belliniano in Catania, at the Archivio Storico Ricordi in Milano and at the Staatsbibliothek zur Preussischer Kulturbesitz in Berlin). PIANO SONATA NO. 4 from the years 1962–1964 is dedicated to the memory of Fiser’s friend, the pianist Antonín Jemelík, who died tragically. As a tribute to their friendship the composer incorporated into the introduction a quotation from their favourite work, Piano Sonata No. 10, Op. 70,by Alexander Scriabin. The tragedy of the death of the composer’s friend pervades the emotionally intense passage of unison octaves which follows the three-bar quotation. From a compositional point of view this work is a masterpiece of the mid-Sixties. Written as one movement, the piece is divided into numerous mutually contrasting segments which themselves are clearly grouped into two sections, exposition and development. The individual themes are introduced in the first section and thematically expanded in the second section. The motif treatment lies almost exclusively in the fragmenting or curtailing of the theme, or in the use of a combination of several themes, for the most part brief and eloquent. This compositional method, together with a clear-cut manner of execution, mainly semitonal melody and sharply contrastive dynamics, lends force and transparency to the piece. Piano Sonata No. 4 was completed in 1964 together with Symphonic Fresco, Concerto da camera for piano and orchestraand Fifteen Prints after Dürer’s Apocalypseand has earned its rightful place alongside them as masterpieces of Fiser’s œuvre. The work was first performed by Pavel Stepán in Prague’s Rudolfinum in 1965. The new setting for this piece is based on the single edition to date (Panton, 1969); only with regard to a few inconsistencies in the score was it necessary to consult the composer’s manuscript (kept at the National Museum – Czech Museum of Music, acquisition number 297/2006). The 17th Century composer, Samuel Capricornus, was the author of a number of pious works, among them this Passion music Ein Lammlein for two sopranos, four viols (two trebles, tenor, and bass) and figured basso continuo.
