Die russische Tradition ist aus seiner Musik deutlich herauszuhören. Die Sinfonie Nr. 3 schrieb Rachmaninov in den Jahren 1935-36. Die Uraufführung fand am 6. November 1936 statt; es spielte das Philadelphia Orchestra unter derLeitung von Leopold Stokowski. Das Werk war weniger traditionell als seine Vorgänger und wurde mit nicht so viel Begeisterung von den damaligen Zuhörern und Kritikern aufgenommen. Der Komponist war jedoch von Qualtität überzeugt.
