(+)
With the new Urtext Primo series, the Wiener Urtext Edition wants to close the gap arising at the point of transition to additional lessons after having studied a piano method. Beginning with a performance level which is outlined by pieces such as Bach's Minuet in G (BWV Anh. 116), Mozart's Minuet in F (KV 5) or Schumann's Wilder Reiter (Op. 68/8), works by three different composers are selected for each volume of the Urtext Primo series, with the aim of offering piano pupils (or even adults who want to resume piano playing) a wide range of repertoire pieces on the basis of which they can enhance their technical and musical skills. The pieces' range of levels of difficulty is relatively narrow so that the volume can be used continuously over a period of about two years. This is what distinguishes the Urtext Primo approach from almost all common anthologies. The selected repertoire takes into account not only pieces of the classic canon of lessons, but also lesser known works which are in no way of less importance for piano lessons. The Urtext Primo volumes are published in the internationally recognised standard of the Wiener Urtext editions. The explanations included in each volume shall help to deepen the knowledge of musical styles, music history and piano playing. A repertoire chart at the end of each volume gives a rough overview of the levels of difficulty of the selected pieces.Volume 4 combines works of the German Romanticism by Schumann, Brahms and Theodor Kirchner. Apart from well known pieces from Schumann's 'Album for the Youth' and the easiest waltzes from opus 39 (in the easier version) by Brahms, the selection contains the attractive set of variations from Schumann's first Youth Sonata Op. 118/1 and Brahms' Saraband in A minor WoO 5/1 as well as a number of pleasant pieces by Theodor Kirchner which continue the tonal air of Schumann and Brahms in easy playable pieces. / Piano

30 Transcriptions. Par SCHUMANN ROBERT. The edition Schumann for Guitar is an interesting attempt to transfer Robert Schumann's romantic, lyrical music to the guitar. As a consequence, new tonal possibilities present themselves for the guitar repertoire, particularly in view of the fact that Schumann himself never composed an original piece for guitar. This volume naturally contains pieces from the famous piano cycles Album für die Jugend, Kinderszenen and Albumblätter, but also some lieder like Mondnacht or Im wunderschönen Monat Mai. Special highlights of the volume are the original Schumann transcriptions by Francisco Tárrega (1852-1909) which prove that guitarists studied Schumann's music as early as the 19th century. Schumann for Guitar is ideal for concerts and music lessons, but also for private music-making. The pieces are of easy to intermediate technical difficulty so that even amateur guitar players will enjoy the pieces! / Niveau : Facile à Moyen / Recueil / Guitare

(+)
Original Version - Edition for Cello and Piano. Schumann?s Cello Concerto Rediscovered. In her first Urtext edition for Edition Peters, internationally renowned cellist Josephine Knight reveals Robert Schumann?s original version of his Cello Concerto in A minor Op. 129 ? a piece he actually called a ?Concertstück? ? removing generations of inauthentic editorial interventions. This is the only available modern scholarly edition of the work as Schumann originally conceived it, and restores the text from October 1850, based on the composer?s manuscript held in the Biblioteka Jagiello?ska in Kraków. It is presented in a beautifully printed edition for cello with Schumann?s original piano reduction. Matching orchestral material is also available from the publisher. Only modern Urtext edition based on Schumann?s original 1850 manuscript Many new corrections and clarifications, especially to the cello part Scholarly preface detailing history of the work and this edition by editor Josephine Knight, Piatti Professor of Cello at the Royal Academy of Music London Cello Part contains Josephine Knight's fingering and bowing suggestions Critical Commentary Matching orchestral material available separately from Edition Peters Recording of the Concertstück featuring Josephine Knight available from Dutton Robert Schumann?s tragic last years have mired many of his greatest works in unnecessary doubt. The story of the suppression of his Violin Concerto by well-meaning friends is relatively well-known. Few, however, know that the version of the Cello Concerto that is routinely heard today is so far from Schumann?s original conception of the work ? not only in details of phrasing and articulation, but also featuring a different ending with a bold final flourish from the cello. Composed in a burst of inspiration in two weeks in October 1850 shortly after he and Clara had moved to Düsseldorf, Schumann (who in 1850 was still in good health) never heard the piece performed. In an effort to promote a performance of the work, he gave the score to the cellist Robert Emil Bockmühl. Bockmühl made revisions that Schumann resisted, and the hoped-for performance never happened. Schumann?s health failed and he died aged just 46 in 1856. The Concerto, in an already substantially revised form, was premiered in 1860 but it was not given significant recognition until it was championed by Pablo Casals in the 20th century by which time (and since) the text for the work had accreted additions and alterations from generations of soloists. Now Josephine Knight, Piatti Professor of Cello at the Royal Academy of Music, London has returned to the original 1850 manuscript of the work, which is in the Biblioteka Jagiello?ska in Kraków, to reveal Schumann?s original thoughts for the first time in a modern Urtext edition. The edition reflects Schumann?s original conception of the work as a Concertstück and restores Schumann?s musical text, free of posthumous interventions. It is presented in a beautifully printed edition for cello, with Schumann?s original piano reduction. Matching orchestral material is also available from the publisher. ?My ultimate wish,? says the editor, ?is to give performers both access to, and confidence that they are playing from, an edition which is a true representation of the piece in its original form, no matter how much more difficult this might be. I found that incorporating the changes enabled the piece to take on a completely different character ? one that is lighter and happier, even ?cheerful?, as Schumann himself described the work.?

(+)
In Vol. 2 of the Violin Sonatas by Robert Schumann the Wiener Urtext Edition presents the F.A.E. sonata jointly composed by Schumann Brahms and Albert Dietrich as well as the edited version with the movements of Brahms and Dietrich being replaced as third Violin sonata of Robert Schumann. The present edition is based on the edition published in 2002 in the New Schumann Complete Edition and thus on the latest musicological findings. In the case of the F.A.E. sonata this is mainly a matter of slight changes in the fields of dynamics and articulation. In the case of Schumann's third Violin sonata the present edition differs moresignificantly from the first edition published in 1956 and the slightly revised new edition of 1988. The order of the middle movements the accuracy of which could not be clearly determined up to now has been changed compared to the earlier editions because of newly found documents. In addition the repetition of the first section of the middle part notated in the first edition before the last 13 bars yet not intended by Schumann has been omitted. The repetition demanded by the composer however of the first eight bars before the beginning of the coda which is missing in hitherto publications has been added. Moreover in contrast to the first edition the new edition contains a variant for bar 100 in the first movement which was not written out in full by Schumann.

Clara Wieck’s sincerest wish was that her future husband, Robert Schumann, turn his extraordinary genius toward the larger and more challenging task of composing orchestral music. Confiding in her diary in 1839, just one year before her marriage, she explained that “it would be best if he composed for Orchestra: his imagination cannot find sufficient scope in the Piano…” In the years that followed their marriage Robert Schumann continued to devote much of his attention to Piano music, but he also found the time to comply with his beloved Clara’s wish by creating a number of musical pieces composed specifically for Piano and Orchestra. Although Schumann’s genius is most in evidence in his masterful solo Piano compositions and superb lieder, his lively and provocative imagination manifests itself with equal aplomb in the works composed for Piano and Orchestra. The same compelling romantic and lyrical qualities that captivate lovers of Schumann’s Piano music are evident in these compositions. Three of his finest are presented here in full score, including the A Minor Piano Concerto, one of the most popular and frequently performed concertos ever written. All demonstrate his remarkably innovative approach to music, diverting substantially from the classic models of the day, and display his immense creativity as well as his warmth and sensitivity. Included in this collection of Schumann’s compositions for Piano and Orchestra are: Piano Concerto In A minor, Op. 54 (published 1846) Concertstück, Op.92 (Introduction and Allegro appassionato; published 1852) Introduction and Allegro, Op. 134 (published 1855) These three works by one of the greatest masters of romanticism will delight musicians, music lovers and students, as well as devotees of Schumann. Pianists will be especially pleased to have these appealing Schumann works in one convenient edition available at an affordable price.

Robert Schumann's Kreisleriana for piano is a cycle of eight contrasting pieces ...
(+)
Robert Schumann's Kreisleriana for piano is a cycle of eight contrasting pieces composed in 1838. The work belongs to one of Schumann's most creative periods. It was influenced by the writings of author E. T. A. Hoffmann and was inspired by Schumann's love for his wife, Clara. The current edition has been thoroughly researched, with comparisons made between all early sources. The 1850 second edition has been used as the primary source, which includes revisions made by Schumann and reflects his final intentions. Discrepancies with the first edition (1838), third edition (1858), and various Clara Schumann editions have been discussed in critical notes. Prefatory matter discusses the genesis of Kreisleriana, the relationship between Hoffmann's writings and Schumann's journalism and compositions, and the early champions and performers of this masterwork. Also included are discussions of the form of each piece and helpful performance suggestions. Editorial pedaling and fingering suggestions have been provided to facilitate learning and performance.Charles Timbrell is Professor of Music and Coordinator of Keyboard Studies at Howard University in Washington, D.C., where he teaches piano, piano literature, and piano pedagogy. Robert Schumann once described his lieder as a ”mirror image of his self”. This applies particularly to his compositions from Heinrich Heine’s “Buch der Lieder”. What began as a lyrical intermezzo then developed into “Dichterliebe” a work with which Schumann identified the ardour of his love for Clara Wieck. This work still presents an enigma to performers; how Schumann interpretes Heine’s irony in his music is often discussed. But one thing is certain: with “Dichterliebe” the composer created what is perhaps the best-loved and one of the most tightly-woven lieder cycles of the Romanticperiod. This new edition presents the work based on the first edition. It takes Schumann’s autograph score into consideration an autograph score where there have recently been discussions as to whether it should be presented as an independent alternative version. The four lieder omitted by Schumann from the printed edition are included in the appendix. High-quality Urtext edition of this well-known song cycle Appendix includes four lieder by Schumann which he did not include in the original cycle Comprehensive foreword and critical commentary (Ger/Eng)

Includes full-length audio CD-Over the course of some three dozen volumes Amadeus Press highly acclaimed Unlocking the Masters series has drawn readers into the worlds of the greatest composers and their music. Curated pairings of critically minded introductory texts andcompanion CDs loaded with tracks selected from the worlds foremost libraries of recorded classics the series truly brings the sounds and stories of its legendary subjects to life. Its latest entry Victor Lederers Schumann: A Listeners Guide isan essential portal to the musical works of and tempestuous life of this little-understood genius. Many if not most major composers improve over the course of their careers. For Schumann however the opposite was true: plagued throughout his lifeby physical and mental illnesses he helplessly ? and consciously ? endured the gradual diminution of his prodigious talent until his premature death at age 46. Throughout Schumann: A Listeners Guide Lederer provides unflinching critiques of theweaknesses that plagued Schumanns style contrasting them with the brilliance of his earliest triumphs. This eminently accessible account explores the full spectrum of the master composers oeuvre from his popular early music and lieder to hisworks for chamber ensembles composed in 1842 to his four beloved if flawed symphonies. It also accounts for Schumanns dramatic works particularly Genoveva his only opera and Incidental Music to Byrons ?Manfred ? a bewilderingly unappreciatedmusical score. As with all volumes in the UTM series Schumann: A Listeners Guide is accompanied by a CD containing two of the masters most daring imaginative flights both explored in detail in the text: the Davidsbündlertänze for piano andDichterliebe (A Poets Love) one of the all-time greatest song cycles and works for voice. Geared toward fledglings but written with an eye turned to aficionados the book is a must-have for Schumann buffs and classical music fans young and old.
