The Coffee Cantata (BA 10211) and the Peasant Cantata (BA 10212) both on librettos by Picander, are among the best-known and most frequently performed of Bach's secular cantatas. Written in or around 1733, the Coffee Cantata deals humorously with the importance of the newly fashionable beverage. This is demonstrated in the soprano aria ; Ah, how sweet the coffee tastes, lovelier than a thousand kisses, milder than Muscatel. Both cantatas reveal Bach's mastery in their unusual subject-matter, formal design, andmusical workmanship. Dans ce livre qui complête une série d'études menées sur la culture durant l'époque nazie, l'historien Michael Kater suit le parcours de huit compositeurs très différents les uns des autres, auscultant le comportement d'artistes qui avaient déjà , au moment de l'avênement de Hitler en 1933, une réputation dans la sphêre musicale allemande et internationale. Son étude minutieuse, qui s'appuie sur une documentation en partie inédite, d'une exceptionnelle richesse, suit la trajectoire de personnalités qui choisirent ou bien la collaboration et l'opportunisme, ou bien la résistance et l'exil. Dans la premiêre catégorie, les deux compositeurs postromantiques, Strauss et Pfitzner, s'accommodêrent du pouvoir nazi au nom de la grande tradition germanique??; Hindemith partageait cette position, mais le modernisme qu'il avait incarné sous la République de Weimar suscitait un rejet qui le contraignit finalement à  l'exil. Orff et Egk saisirent l'occasion de faire carriêre et de représenter la nouvelle Allemagne par leurs oeuvres et leur activité. A l'opposé, Schoenberg et Weill, qui étaient juifs, prirent immédiatement le chemin de l'exil. Hartmann, enfin, cessa de composer, restant à  l'écart de la vie publique jusqu'à  la fin de la guerre. On raconte qu’une caverne se trouverait sous le promontoire qui s’avance en saillie. Dans cette caverne, vivait jadis un terrible dragon qui saccageait les pre´s alentours et re´pandait la terreur parmi la population. En ces temps-la` vivait a` Guflina un ge´ant dont la force valait celle de douze hommes. Les paysans en de´tresse le supplie`rent de leur venir en aide. Le ge´ant accepta et entreprit de se battre contre le dragon. Il alla se mettre en embuscade sur le promontoire au-dessus de la caverne. Constatant que le dragon n’e´tait pas dispose´ a` en sortir, il se mit a` jeter des pierres dans la caverne. Le combat e´clata imme´diatement et le ge´ant finit par l’emporter de justesse. The Serenade in E-flat, K. 375, exists in two versions, one for two clarinets, two horns and two bassoons, and another for the same forces plus two oboes, forming an octet. From Mozart himself we know a fair amount about the occasion that led to the first, six-instrument version of this work and about its early performances. Written for the sister-in-law of the court painter Hickl, it probably originated toward the end of September or the beginning of October in 1781 and was first performed on 15 October, the name-day of St. Theresa. The octet version probably arose in the summer of the following year. It is far more than a mechanical expansion of the sextetwith the oboes merely reinforcing the clarinets colla parte. Not only did Mozart take advantage of the occasion to make changes in the articulation and the dynamics, he also altered the work's melodic substance and formal design. The two additional high-register instruments allowed him to achieve more subtle distinctions and gradations of timbre, thereby enabling him, for example, to vary the timbral homogeneity of the two clarinets.
