Published by Carl Fischer Music (CF.SPS78). ISBN 9781491152553. UPC: 680160910052. Key: Bb major. Festival March is presented in a new edition arranged by Richard Summers. It is a tour de force composition for advanced bands and hearkens back to a bygone era during the golden age of the band movement. Directors and students will hear operatic music from composer Victor Herbert who is best known for his Christmas classic, Toyland. This is a richly scored masterpiece that deserves to return to standard status in concert band repertoire. We are proud to bring you this new setting of this cherished classic. Festival March by Victor Herbert was written for the Pittsburgh Symphony and first performed under Herbert’s direction in Chicago on Dec. 9, 1901 celebrating the 12th anniversary of Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre. Also known as the Auditorium Festival March, he included it many times for programs of a festival nature. The main theme Auld Lang Syne, a famous Scottish folk song, is incorporated many times along with brass fanfares, interludes and march melodies. This band arrangement is very similar to the original orchestral composition. The missing string parts, the addition of the saxophone section and other band instruments, editing of the superimposed triplets against sixteenth notes, to one or the other, and articulations suitable for the band, were major challenges. The style of early twentieth-century American music is captured here. This arrangement will give band musicians access to a fine piece of music that could only be appreciated by orchestra musicians up to now. Although suitable for many occasions, this piece is a great way to begin or end a December holiday concert.  Notes to the ConductorVictor Herbert’s music can be interpreted in a romantic style, which is the conductor’s responsibility to read in nuance and musicality. The beginning and other triple-tonguing sections of this piece have a March of the Toys quality to it.  The interludes and Auld Lang Syne sections are legato and musical. The March sections can also be shaped musically.About the ComposerVictor Herbert was born in Ireland in 1861 and raised in Germany. When he moved to America in 1886, he joined the Metropolitan Opera as principal cellist and eventually composed many works including forty-three operettas on Broadway from the 1890s to World War I, including Naughty Marietta and Babes in Toyland. Victor Herbert conducted the Pittsburgh Symphony from 1898 to 1904 and then was the conductor of his own Victor Herbert Orchestra. He formed ASCAP with a group of composers in 1914 and was the director until his death in 1924. Among his thirty-one compositions for orchestra, Festival March was a favorite of his and was eventually published by Carl Fischer Music.  . $150.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 24 hours - In Stock

Composing this piece was an interesting process. A piece of a melody or an idea takes shape, and after writing it down, itas like planting a seed that starts to grow and develop. I got a snippet of a western idea and then thought of a monument in my hometown of Wheeling, West Virginia. The statue is called Madonna of the Trail. The history part of this piece started to take shape as I researched this statue. There are twelve of them located in twelve states where the Old Trail Road, or National Road, passes through. As the piece developed, I started to think about the travel of a pioneer woman and her family passing through various areas of our early country. The 3,000 mile coast-to-coast National road was realized in the early 1900s but was based on six trails that date back to the 1700s. After developing the introduction and theme to this concert band piece, the story began to take shape. The slower 3/4 section melody hints at Greensleeves (What Child Is This) which appropriately weaves itself into the mix. Finally heading further west into New Mexico, Arizona, and California, the melody takes on a Spanish flavor and returns to the main theme before its conclusion. Divisi parts that are optional can be utilized to add a richer sound. Feel free to experiment with octave changes in the woodwinds in the fuller sections, if students are comfortable playing up an octave. Always be aware of the musicality, blend, and especially legato playing when required. Composing this piece was an interesting process. Sacred. 176 pages. GIA Publications #9897. Published by GIA Publications (GI.G-9897). ISBN 9780854022809. This book provides a comprehensive collection of 30 anthems by 23 composers, for church and school choirs. Popular RSCM composers Thomas Hewitt Jones, Piers Maxim, Sarah MacDonald, Peter Nardone and Geoff Weaver have also contributed new works. They employ a wide range of interesting and inspiring texts that echo the themes of the Sunday readings, as well as familiar words that have been given a new lease of life by inventive and imaginative settings. No choir will feel short-changed by these three-part settings. Each composer has set about creating something original rather than reducing existing material. Many of the pieces are flexible so they can comfortably be sung by smaller groups. The organ parts are straightforward and can be also be played on the piano. $17.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks

The energy and drive of this piece uses simple time signatures of 4/4 and 3/4 and mixes groups of three notes and syncopation to the rhythm and the melody. There is also a use of a musical term called hemiola, when groups of two beats are replaced by groups of three beats, creating a shift between duple and triple meter. Syncopation adds a modern, jazzy, popular feel to this exciting concert band composition. Along with syncopation and popular influences are countermelodies to the main theme that are as important as the melody for balance and blend. This adds a feeling of baroque or renaissance style to the texture. Yet the melodies, chords, and structure are recognizable and enjoyable to listen to and perform. The middle 3/4 section is slightly slower featuring brass and saxophones and played legato. Then at the key change, it becomes more articulate and contrapuntal. The a tempo at m. 88 returns to the original thematic material, differing slightly from the beginning, and the coda has some added technical and challenging woodwind passages. The cymbal/triangle part has a lot of directions on choking, hi-hat sound, etc., that will add nice color to the piece if performed as indicated. | “American Suite”, in A Major, Op. 98 Flute and Piano Carl Fischer
Chamber Music flute, piano SKU: CF.WF232 Composed by Antonin Dvorak. Edit...(+)
Chamber Music flute, piano SKU: CF.WF232 Composed by Antonin Dvorak. Edited by Robert Stallman. Arranged by Robert Stallman. Set of Score and Parts. With Standard notation. 28+16 pages. Carl Fischer Music #WF232. Published by Carl Fischer Music (CF.WF232). ISBN 9781491153772. UPC: 680160911271. Known internationally for superior flute editions, Robert Stallman continues his considerable expansion of the flute repertoire with re-creations, or “new†works for flute by Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Beethoven, Chopin, Dvořák, and other great composers.Conceived originally as a work for solo piano, this arrangement of Dvořák’s Suite in A Major for flute and piano is based on both the piano and orchestra versions. It is one in a series of Stallman’s “new†works for flute. Dvořák composed the Suite in A Major in 1894, inspired by his happy and fruitful stay in the “New World†—a period that produced some of his greatest works, full of thematic freshness, raw energy and folk influences, both American and Old World Czech. The “New World†Symphony, Cello Concerto, “American†Quartet, String Quintet in E≤ Major, the Violin Sonatina and this A Major Suite are all cut from the same musical cloth—textured with his personal impressions of the Wild West’s fascinating Indian and Afro-American music, its God-fearing and friendly people, its vast open spaces and its awe-inspiring natural beauty. PrefaceConceived originally as a work for solo piano, the Suite in A Major was composed by Dvořák in 1894, during his famous two-year visit to the United States. He wrote the work in a mere ten days, and a year later made a full orchestration of it. The Suite was first performed in this second version in 1910 in Prague at the Rudolfinum. Dvořák, who died in 1904, never had a chance to hear a performance of this stirring orchestral realization. The Suite was inspired by the composer’s happy and fruitful stay in the “New Worldâ€, especially by his unforgettable summers spent in the quiet Czech-American village of Spillville, Iowa—a period that produced some of his greatest works, full of thematic freshness, raw energy and folk influences, both American and Old World Czech. The “New World†Symphony, Cello Concerto, “American†Quartet, String Quintet in Eb Major, the Violin Sonatina and this A Major Suite are all cut from the same musical cloth—textured with his personal impressions of the Wild West’s fascinating Indian and Afro-American music, its God-fearing and friendly people, its vast open spaces and its awe-inspiring natural beauty.Several of the Suite’s affecting melodies find echoes in these other, better known compositions of this American period. Wistful themes abound in all five movements, reflecting Dvořák’s transformative American experience as it found resonance in his own emotions. Contrasting with deeply felt, contemplative passages are Dvořák’s joyous and tempestuous expressions, which open the second, third and final movements. This arrangement for flute and piano is based on both the piano and orchestra versions. It is one in a series of my “new†works for flute by some of our greatest composers and I am delighted to add it to the collection. I predict that the A Major Suite will become a popular addition to our Romantic recital repertoire, much like the Dvořák Sonatina.—Robert StallmanMarblehead, Mass.June 1, 2018. $16.99 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks

Dating back to the 13th century, the clock tower was located in the center of a town and used by townspeople to hear the time through bells and chimes ringing out. There are clock towers all over the world and they are wonderful landmarks to towns and communities. This work begins and ends with the Westminster Chimes theme, which is used by many clocks and clock towers, including Big Ben, the famous clock tower in London. Clock Tower contains many essential musical and technical skills for a beginning level band piece. The tick of the clock mechanism is imitated by pitched woodblocks, and the main theme is based on ascending and descending scale patterns, reinforcing note-reading ability for the beginning student. There are layers of new countermelodies and contrasting sections with dynamics and legato passages, giving the students an opportunity to play in different musical styles. There is a low brass and woodwind feature and a section introducing eighth notes to the upper winds. The sound between the woodwinds and the brass are also important, but many woodwind passages are cued in the brass in case a beginning band might need extra players to help with the balance and blend. This gives the director the opportunity to experiment with these cues and add a few other instruments when needed. Exemplary is a mature musical piece for beginning bands. Even though only the first six notes of the Bb-major scale are used with simple rhythms, students and teachers will find many, fun musical challenges that provide opportunities for for growth. As the title suggests, performances of Exemplary should serve as a desirable model, be worthy of imitation, and should represent the absolute best in musicianship. Exemplary is a mature musical piece for beginning bands. Even though only the first six notes of the Bb-major scale are used, and simple rhythms are used to compose this piece, it has many musical challenges that will enhance students’ musical growth. There are some very musical ideas and sections in this piece that should be explored. Just as this title suggests, Exemplary should serve as a desirable model, be worthy of imitation, and should represent the best possible example of its kind. If you describe something as exemplary, it should be extremely good. With all of these challenges, the piece also has some nice melodies and is fun to play.  Notes to the ConductorThere are marcato and legato styles, many dynamic markings (sometimes different between woodwinds, brass, and percussion) major and minor third intervals, and challenging beginning percussion writing (that should not be overplayed). Four-measure phrasing should be observed. When a crescendo occurs, it should connect to the next note without taking a breath. These are teachable concepts that will benefit the musicianship of the students and take them to a higher level of performance.  . $7.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks

Chamber Music violin, piano SKU: CF.FE192 Composed by Louise Talma. Set of Score and Parts. With Standard notation. 18+8 pages. Carl Fischer Music #FE192. Published by Carl Fischer Music (CF.FE192). ISBN 9780825877568. UPC: 798408077563. 9.5 x 13 inches. The Pytheas Center for Contemporary Music notes: Talma was the first woman to receive two Guggenheims, the first woman elected to the National Institute of Arts and Letters (1974), the first American woman to have a full-scale opera performed in Germany, the first American to teach at Fontainebleau, and the first woman to receive the Sibelius Medal for composition. This is only the highlights of a long life of composing. Talma spent a good amount of time at the MacDowell Colony, where she wrote many of her finest works, including the Violin Sonata. Having studied composition with Nadia Boulanger over 17 summers in her youth, Talma dedicated the Sonata to her former teacher and long-time friend on the occasion of Boulanger's 75th birthday. The single movement reflects Talma's style in 1962, with more than a passing nod to 12-tone construction. For advanced performers. UPC: 680160919840. These are teachable concepts that will benefit the musicianship of the students and take them to a higher level of performance.  . $50.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 24 hours - In Stock
