Gopak is the first movement of a set of Symphonic Dances written for the Hofstra Unibersity Wind Ensemble, directed by Peter Boonshaft, who commissioned and premiered the work in 2009. Gopak is a tribute to my Polish and Ukrainian roots. My father used to dance traditional Ukrainian dances including the Gopak, and some of my earliest musical memories include the joyful, energetic, and rhythmic feel of those wonderful folk dances.Gopak has a strong feeling of two beats, is accented quite heavily, and is energetic from beginning to end. The melodies are completely original, but the lively feel of the music calls to my mind the energy of the Gopak, notes composer Eric Ewazen.

Bagpipers is the first movement of the three-movement Sonatina composed in 1915 (1. Bagpipers, 2.Bear Dance and 3. Finale). The composer said of the piece, ''Originally I planned a group of Romanianfolk dances for piano. I selected three parts of this and called it Sonatina. The first movement, Bagpipers[...] consists of two dances played by two bagpipers.'' The piece is based on a couple dance fromTransylvania, the ardeleana (also known as the kanászos), while the middle section was inspired bythe bagpipe playing of a middle-aged man recorded by Bartók in Váncsfalva (now Oncesti) of Bihar County during February 1910. In 1931, Bartók arranged it for symphony orchestraunder the title Dances from Transylvania. This arrangement for oboe and piano was made by Liszt Prize-winningoboist Tibor Szeszler (1919 1992).

Kentish Dances was commissioned by the Bromley Youth Music Trust for the Bromley Youth Concert Band - Michael Purton, conductor. Bromley is in Kent, the most southeasterly of all the English counties. Kent has a rich folk history and, like many parts of the country, its own home-grown dance tunes. What has become known in England as country dancing became popular during the Elizabethan period amongst the middle and upper classes, who preferred the style to the more formal galliards and pavans of the royal court. This suite is based on three dance tunes that originated in Kent; the first is a sort of moto perpetuo based on two lively 6/8 tunes, Dover Castle and The Fair Maid of Wickham. The middle movement uses the rather sombre Blackheath, contrasting it with the charming and apt Bromley Bells. The finale uses the sprightly We Are All Right at Canterbury and Ramsgate Pier, using the lilting Northdown Waltz as a lyrical contrast.

'Bartok wrote 'Two Rumanian Dances' for piano, op.8a in 1909-1910 and arranged the first of the pair for orchestra in time for a concert on 12 February 1911. The highly positive reviews of the premiere describe the dance as brilliantly orchestrated, bizarre in its harmonies, and orgiastic in its conclusion. The A sections of its ABA form insistently repeat a four-bar theme that is itself composed of internal repetitions. Bartok maintains interest in the material by varying the orchestration, and, in the final section, with sudden breaks and changes in tempo. The slow middle section has a more vocal and impassioned emotional quality than the mechanistic dance that surrounds it. Bartok wrote in 1931 that although the work was inspired by Rumanian folk music, the themes were entirely his own.' (HCD 32506 Bartok New Series Vol. 6, David E. Schneider).
