Concerto Orchestral

Full Score-The Horn Concerto was written in 1971 and was the first of the ten co...(+)
Full Score-The Horn Concerto was written in 1971 and was the first of the ten concertos Gregson has composed to date. It is dedicated to the English horn player Ifor James who died in 2004 and was originally written for brass band. However in 2013 Gregson was asked by Paul Klein Principal Horn of the Ulster Orchestra and BBC Northern Ireland to undertake an orchestral version for him. Gregson decided to score the concerto for a late Haydn sized orchestra with the addition of a percussionist to add some colour to the texture. The concerto takes as its starting point the Mozartian model namely a sonata form opening movement a song-like slow movement and a jaunty rondo finale. The opening movement opens with a strident motif built on rising fourths announced by the soloist and answered by the orchestra. This pattern of ‘question/answer’ continues until a climactic moment breaks the tension and is followed by a lyrical second subject announced by the soloist over undulating rhythmic patterns on strings. The music is developed and recapitulated from these ideas with the lyrical idea returning via solo clarinet with horn answering in canon. The movement ends with the strident fourths this time in inversion. The slow movement is in tertiary form and opens with an expansive melody from the soloist over a repetitive harmonic and melodic pattern. This is expanded and developed building all the while in intensity until it is interrupted by cadenza-like passages on the horn and muted brass. After a brief climax the music subsides into a moment of emotional serenity before the opening melody returns this time on solo oboe with the horn interweaving its own answering melodic lines. The rondo finale is more light-hearted in mood with a catchy 6/8 tune at its heart. It is twice interrupted first by an idea built on long held chromatic notes from the soloist against a highly rhythmic backdrop (wind brass and snare drum) then by a slower more thoughtful melodic idea. Par MOZART WOLFGANG AMADEUS. Mozart Requiem (K.626) (Ostrzyga completion) (Full Score) This publication offers a source-critical edition of Mozart’s fragmentary “Requiem” as well as an alternative to the traditional Süssmayr version. It makes it possible to perform 1) the fragment, identified in print in both the score and the parts, 2) the authentic sections left incomplete by Mozart, now in a stylistically appropriate orchestration, and 3) those sections missing entirely in the fragment, newly added in Mozart’s idiom taking into account historical additions by Süssmayr and Eybler. When completing the fragment, the editor drew on comprehensive comparative and analytical studies of Mozart’s church style and compositional workmanship. The influence of Handel and Bach manifested in his final years, particularly in the “Requiem” fragment, is taken into account in those sections requiring completion or fresh composition. At two points readers may choose between alternative movements (or sections), since proceeding from Süssmayr’s historical version, two divergent options cannot be weighed against each other but each one may well reflect Mozart’s intentions: the “Lacrimosa” may end with or without “Amen” fugue, and the “Sanctus” may begin in the customary D major or in D minor. Above all, this makes it possible to retain the B-flat major “Hosanna” from Süssmayr’s autograph, a movement which, until now, has not been appreciated as compositionally flawless. - Scholarly-critical edition of the “Requiem” fragment - With performance material for presentation of 1) the fragment, 2) a version with completions of the authentic Mozart sections or 3) a full completion consistent with Mozart’s musical idiom - Missing sections were completed by drawing from other fragmentary sacred works by Mozart - Added or completed sections incorporate influences from Bach and Handel already detectable in the fragment - Alternative performance options for the “Lacrimosa”, “Sanctus” and “Benedictus” - Straight-forward piano reduction - Extensive foreword (Ger/Eng) on the work’s history, reception and modern completions, with analytical stylistic critique - Detailed Critical Commentary (Eng), partly available on the Bärenreiter website - Tried and tested on many occasions, e.g. at Harvard University, the Rheingau Music Festival, the Monadnock Music Festival (New Hampshire), in Salt Lake City (Utah), as well as in radio broadcasts (NDR, SWR, WDR) and CD recordings with Concerto Köln, Chorwerk Ruhr and Florian Helgath (“Le Disque classique du jour” from francemusique.fr and three nominations for Opus Klassik 2021 in the categories “Ensemble”, “Choral Recording” and “Editorial Achievement”) - Full Score (BA11310), Vocal Score (BA11310-90) and performance material (BA11310) available for sale / Date parution : 2022-07-20/ Répertoire / Chœur Mixte SATB et Orchestre

The second sonata is on a much larger scale than the first and has three movements which develop in intensity reaching a climax in the last movement which is a passacaglia. It is a stormy work in the sense that it opens peacefully and closes in a similar manner with a heavy shower of notes and ideas in between. There is little hint of this in the gentle opening of the first movement and although it follows the pattern of its previous sonata in developing a climax and releasing it again it is not until the scherzo with its powerful motor rhythms that the full fury of the storm breaks. The concluding passacaglia is built on repetition. The nature of the form partymakes this inevitable but repetition becomes a subtext with the idea of speeding up to a climax being itself repeated the second time subsiding into the peace of a storm blown out.© John Joubert

With Vigour2. Free and Enigmatic3. CalmoThere is usually some sort of extra-musicalstarting point for my pieces and for the Clarinet Concerto this was ‘The Cracked Bell’ by Baudelaire. In a short space of time the work seemed to take over and move further away the original stimulus with the character andinteractive roles of the soloist and ensemble were suggested by the wintry evocative atmosphere of the poem. The piece opens with declamatory cadenza-like passages in the clarinet that are in turn commented on by theensemble. A more playful section where the clarinet line is very virtuosic leads to a long gently-unfolding melody in the ensemble that begins in the depths of the bass register and gradually gets much higher. Virtuosicclarinet lines interject against the accompaniment and both pursue their own course until culminating in a high impassioned melody for the clarinet coloured by fast-moving passage work in the higher registers of ensemble. Themovement ends with the ‘call and response’ lines of its opening. The second movement opens with an extended solo for the clarinet in its haunting chalumeau register. With each rising phrase the clarinet line gets higheruntil the ensemble enters in unison. The movement becomes much faster and energetic from this point with brisk fleeting lines for soloist and ensemble. The third movement is the most reflective of the three. It opens witha flute solo leading to the solo clarinet line and makes much of the poignant singing style which is so characteristic of the instrument. A melancholy falling passage in the ensemble becomes a recurring feature before the

Vecné evangelium / The Eternal Gospel Cantata for Solo Voices Mixed Chorus and Orchestra Leoš Janácek’s great oratorio “The Eternal Gospel” for soprano tenor mixed chorus and orchestra is based on a medieval legend in which an angel announces the coming of the Kingdom of Love on Earth to a Cistercian monk Joachim of Flora. Janácek set the text as a dramatic scene with two characters. The chorus unfolds as a contrasting foil to the two main figures until the final climax when the people sing “Alleluia” and receive the message of the brotherhood of all creation. The Eternal Gospel occupies aspecial place in Janácek’s œuvre. The dream-like atmosphere and emotional force of this twenty-minute cantata cast an unusually powerful spell. It originated during a time of turmoil: Janácek wrote it in spring 1914 on the eve of the First World War and the première took place in Prague in February 1917. In 1924 Janácek revised the cantata yet again for a festive performance on the occasion of his seventieth birthday. The vocal score has been prepared by Leoš Faltus one of the two editors of the volume for the Janácek Complete Edition (series B/volume 4). - Urtext Janacek Complete Edition - Full score (BA6860) and vocal score (BA6860-90) available for sale - Performance material (BA6860-72) available for hire

This edition of John Thompson's Easiest Piano Course introduces a number of First Hit Songs to the beginner pianist providing easy-to-play hits in the well-loved John Thompson style with simplified arrangements and large notation. A number of the most popular chart songs are included in First Hit Songs which have all been simplified so that pupils working through parts two to four of the Easiest Piano Course are able to play some familiar and famous tunes. The songs are ordered progressively so as pupils learn more challenging theory and techniques they can put that intopractice by getting to grips with more advanced songs. All the songs included here are well-known hits with most being modern chart-toppers. The 15 hits in this songbook include Piano-based ballads like Tom Odell's Real Love and Sam Smith's I'm Not The Only One as well as more upbeat pop tunes arranged for Piano like Style by Taylor Swift and Meghan Trainor's Lips Are Movin'. Other hits like See You Again Hold Back The River Blame It On Me and Ed Sheeran's Thinking Out Loud are included along with two all-time classics Love Is All Around and We Are The Champions. Popular songs like these enable pupils to enhance their learning by using the techniques to play songs they know and love helping them to develop deeper musicality. Because dynamics and phrasing are not introduced until part three of the Easiest Piano Course some of the songs early in First Hit Songs do not feature this while some outline fingering is included throughout helping pupils at this level. As well as being a fun and enjoyable complement to learning the book can also provide invaluable sight-reading practice for advanced students. For a

To see the summer sky for Violin and Viola falls into four movements. The first movement opens with the two instruments sounding almost as one playing very high glassy harmonics. Gradually an expressive viola solo emerges withboth instruments descending to their lower ranges. A livelier quasi scherzando solo for violin accompanied by viola pedal notes leads to a chorale like passage the violin at the top of its range whilst the viola is at itslowest. The movement ends with the two instruments coming together once again on a unison Bb and fades away almost as it has begun but this time in the husky lower registers. The second movement is much faster and openswith a downward flurry for both instruments. A continuous pizzicato line for viola is interrupted by more violent passages in the violin. The two instruments come together in a dance-like passage before the roles are reversed. Finally an ecstatic melody surfaces in the viola and is later continued in the violin before the movement closes with the spiky figures of its opening the two instruments ending in unison. The third movement encompasses isthe most delicate and still music of the piece. After a very tranquil opening an expressive violin melody is accompanied by a gentle rocking figure in the viola. Tentative at first intensity and speed gather until the violinreaches stratospheric heights. Both of the instruments play at the extremes of their registers before moving to common ground for a more lively textural passage. This is followed by a passionate reminder of the movement’s opening gradually fading away to nothing. The piece ends with a Moto Perpetuo. The instruments begin by dovetailing a single line which develops into two strands before a more violent section appears punctuated by strident doublestops. Both instruments have slightly manic solo episodes before the movement quickly dies away in the single line of its opening

| Violin Concerto Orchestra, Violin Schott
My Violin Concerto is scored for a Classical-sized orchestra, with the addition ...(+)
My Violin Concerto is scored for a Classical-sized orchestra, with the addition of a harp and celeste, and lasts around 17 minutes. Although the work sets out to explore the lyrical characteristics of the solo instrument, it is only gradually that the violin finds its full, lyric voice, and thence, as the work progresses, a more dominant role. This, in one sense, is the 'journey' of the piece. The work's straightforward formal scheme consists of three movements (roughly fast-slow-fast) framed by a reflective introduction and epilogue. However, these formal divisions exist within a single, unbroken arc. Such an overall symmetrical shape places the slow Arioso (itself divided into three subsections) at the midpoint, sandwiched between the two Allegro movements. The dramaturgy of the piece centres on a twofold search. First there is the ongoing pursuit to 'recapture' the simple melodic material stated by the solo violin - accompanied by the harp's bass register - during the opening bars. Whilst aspects of this melody are invoked frequently throughout (especially in the violin cadenza which closes the Arioso movement), it is only with the final and most important climax of the work that the melody appears again in its complete form, now accompanied by violent, orchestral stabs. The second search is for a tonal resting place, the arrival of which is delayed until the close of the epilogue. The original version of the Violin Concerto, commissioned by the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, was premiered in Amsterdam in February 2012 with Gordan Nikolic as soloist. The present, revised version was created for Barnabás Kelemen and the Hallé. The piece is dedicated, with admiration, to my friend Oliver Knussen. (Ryan Wigglesworth) / Violon Et Orchestre
