Scarlet Letters was composed in 1984 on commission of the pianist and harpsichordist Franzpeter Goebels (1920-1988) on the occasion of the 300th birth day of Domenico Scarlatti. The original working title 'Lettere scarlattine' is a concealed homage to the Italian composer. The compositional material is limited to the tones D, E, C, Es (= S, spoken 'Es' = E flat in German notation) and A, derived from the musical letters of Domenico Scarlatti's name, and the tones B (= B flat in German nota tion) and H (= B natural), the initials of my name. With 7 tones and 7 parts, this music is a sort of story about my imaginary encounter with the composer Domenico Scarlatti who was then one of my favourite composers. Sometimes I also used compositional means which I discovered in the sonatas of Scarlatti, such as quick 6/8 figures, afterbeat octaves and repetitions of short motifs. I tried to translatethe clarity, brightness and cheerfulness, the astounding modulations and the pianistic brilliance of his music into my compositional language.Barbara HellerThe piece was recorded on CD by the American pianist Deborah Richards (WERGO 6610-02). Der Schauspieldirektor (The Impresario) was composed in the spring of 1786 to fulfill a commission from Joseph II for performance during a visit to Vienna by the Governor-General of the Netherlands. The visitors were meant to be entertained with a short German and an Italian musical comedy during a festival arranged on short notice in Schonbrunn Palace. The choice of composers fell to Mozart and Salieri. Both pieces spoofed the theatrical practices of the day. Der Schauspieldirektor, by Gottlieb Stephanie the Younger, has a loosely-constructed plot that hinges on the vanity of opera singers and the empty-headedness of many traveling companies. Frank Lustig wants to create a new theatrical troupe, for which Herr Eiler is willing to supply money, but only on condition that his lady friend is allowed to join. In the course of the piece, appearances are made by other ladies with resonant names who want to be retained as singers and who attempt to outdo each other until reason is allowed to prevail. Warum gerade ein Orchester-Liederzyklus nach Celan-Gedichten zum Beethoven-Jubilaum 2002? Was verbindet die humanistischen Ideen des genialen Klassikers mit dem gespaltenen Menschenbild eines der bedeutendsten Lyriker des 20. Jahrhunderts? Vielleicht die Gestaltung des Aussergewohnlichen in Wort und Ton? - oder die innere Einsamkeit des grossen Kunstlertums? Der mir zum diesjahrigen Bonner Beethovenfest gegebene Kompositionsauftrag war an kein bestimmtes Thema gebunden. Beim Nachdenken uber einen sinnvollen Beitrag mit Beethoven-Bezug erinnerte ich mich an mein 1967 komponiertes Werk Mit wechselndem Schlussel , Lieder nach Paul Celan fur Bariton und Klavier (aus Celans Gedichtbanden ,,Mohn und ,,Gedachtnis und ,,Von Schwelle zu Schwelle), entstanden wahrend einer sehr progressiven Schaffensperiode, inspiriert von Versen, die Vergangenheit und Gegenwart poetisch verschlusselt miteinander verknupfen. Langer schon plante ich, diesen Zyklus zu orchestrieren - das schien mir jetzt der geeignete Ansatz zur Erfullung meines Auftrags, denn ich wollte zugleich das Werk formal anders gestalten, die sieben einzelnen Gesange unter einem grossen symphonischen Bogen zusammenfassen. So entstand ein ganz neues Opus - eine Art Solo-Kantate fur Singstimme und Orchester - durchaus im Beethovenschen Sinn und Geist, da ich mich wahrend der Ausarbeitung der neuen Fassung von Kompositions- und Instrumentations-Ideen und -Prozessen aus Beethoven-Symphonien anregen liess. So zum Beispiel bei der Durchfuhrung von charakteristischen Motiven und Strukturen: im Prolog und im ersten Lied (Kristall), oder bei der Gestaltung dramatischer Bewegungsablaufe - etwa im vierten Lied (In Gestalt eines Ebers), bei der Darstellung kammermusikalisch-lyrischer Stimmungen im funften Lied (Nachts) und bei titanischen Klangausbruchen im Schlussgesang (An den langen Tischen der Zeit), schliesslich bei der formalen Gliederung des ganzen Werks in funf symmetrisch angeordnete, grossere Satze. Fazit: ein Beitrag zur Synthese von zeitgenossischer Lyrik und Musik im Geiste Beethovens.
