Philip Sparke?s Skilful Studies is the second volume of a progressive series of study books that takes the young wind player from beginner to accomplished musician.
Following on from Starter Studies, and preceeding Super Studies, this collection generally contains longer pieces suitable for the developing young musician. Specifically tailored for each instrument, Skilful Studies introduces the concept of phrasing by suggesting suitable breathing points and takes the player into new keys with extended instrumental ranges.
New notes are introduced in a gradual and logical manner; woodwind players are taken into their second octave, learning to cross the ?break? as smoothly as possible and brass players have their range extended both upwards and downwards.

The clarinet method op. 63 by Carl Baermann from 1867 is still a standard work in classical clarinet education today. The thoroughly revised new edition aims at reviewing the educational concept, which is still valid today, for modern lessons, adjusting the music and texts, and sensibly complementing the teaching contents. The editor who draws on many years of experience as a clarinettist in an orchestra and university lecturer of clarinet has succeeded in adapting the valuable teaching material to the requirements of today while maintaining the basic methodology. The result is a total of 7 volumes:Clarinet Method Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 (ED 21761, ED 21762)Clarinet Method Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, with 2 CDs each (ED 21761-50, ED 21762-50): The CDs contain the piano accompaniment for the performance pieces, with and without clarinetTune Book 1 and 2 (ED 21763, ED 21764): piano score of the method's performance pieces, with additional inserted clarinet partDaily Exercises (ED 21765): systematic scale, interval and chord exercises in all keys, complemented and published separately from the original methodDue to trilingual nature of all editions (German, English, French), they can be used universally.About the revision:The musical text is based on the first edition of the method. Only a few differences concerning the articulation as well as some misprints and typographical errors were revised. By deleting the historical fingering instructions for the German fingering system, the clarinet method not only has a clean and, compared to the original, more clearly structured layout, but can also be used universally. The content of the text and the performance directions of the original were linguistically modernized and occasionally extended by further ideas from the teaching practice, such as concepts for warming up, breathing exercises, literature suggestions or tips for daily practising. Further additions of scale and triad studies in all major and minor keys make this method a comprehensive and thorough work of study which not only serves as teaching material for young and adult beginners, but is also a valuable compendium of scale exercises and studies for advanced musicians and is ideal for training velocity and dexterity. The Clarinet Method Vols. 1 and 2 contain not only scales and technical fingering exercises but also Baermann's popular performance pieces, like Romanze (No. 14), which are ideal as performance pieces, yet at the same time train both technique and musical expressiveness. The systematic scale, interval and chord exercises in all keys, however, were removed and are published separately in the volume Daily Exercises (ED 21765) for reasons of clarity. The two textbooks are available with or without CDs. The editions with CDs contain two audio CDs each which were recorded live by the editor and which contain a classic audio version of each performance piece as well as a pure piano version for playing along. / Clarinette

Programme Note WHIRLS´ WORLD (1970) for wind quintet. 'Whirl´s World' was composed in 1970 as one of a series of works which explored the so-called musical ´difference-phenomenon´. This term (which I coined in connection with a series of lectures in California that year) indicates a motivic duplicity in which two - often very simple - melodic ideas come ´out of phrase´ with each other giving rise to a course of constantly changing conditions. In Whirl´s World the difference phenomenon is heard from the beginning where a three-note motif and a four-note motif are set against each other. It all proceeds lake a lightning-fast series of chess moves; first notenumber 1 of the three-note motif is moved then note number 1 of the four-note motif thereafter note number 2 of the three-note motif - and so on. This fast opening flows into a slow section in which the differences now appear as ´fluctuations´ between very closely related tones (of which one is sung by the musician). There is only one movement built up as an organic growth from slow to furiously fast whirling and back again to slow which can be heard as ´slow-motion whirls´ as a water-world of ripples and bubbles. All this is framed by the introduction described above and a corresponding conclusion in which the movement is now descending ending in the resolute bass full-stop. Per Norgård

The editor who draws on many years of experience as a clarinettist in an orchestra and university lecturer of clarinet has succeeded in adapting the valuable teaching material to the requirements of today while maintaining the basic methodology. The result is a total of 7 volumes:
Clarinet Method Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 (ED 21761, ED 21762)
Clarinet Method Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, with 2 CDs each (ED 21761-50, ED 21762-50): The CDs contain the piano accompaniment for the performance pieces, with and without clarinet
Tune Book 1 and 2 (ED 21763, ED 21764): piano score of the method\'s performance pieces, with additional inserted clarinet part
Daily Exercises (ED 21765): systematic scale, interval and chord exercises in all keys, complemented and published separately from the original method
Due to trilingual nature of all editions (German, English, French), they can be used universally.
About the revision:
The musical text is based on the first edition of the method. The tune books contain all performance pieces from the Clarinet Method Op. 63 by Carl Baermann for clarinet and piano. Thanks to the revised editions, they are now available as scores with inserted solo part for the first time. Thus, the popular performance pieces and studies can also be used separately from the textbook ? as an addition to the repertoire of music lessons or simply as a collection of attractive performance pieces for pupils and advanced clarinettists.
As with the two volumes of the Clarinet Method, the musical text of the tune books is based on the first edition of the method, and only few differences concerning articulation as well as several misprints and typographical errors were revised. By deleting the historical fingering instructions for the German fingering system, the clarinet method not only has a clean and, compared to the original, more clearly structured layout, but can also be used universally.

100 daily exercises to improve the homogeneity. The volume of Carbonare, clarinetist, first solo clarinet at the National Orchestra of France, the Berliner Philharmoniker and now the National Orchestra of the National Academy of Santa Cecilia in Rome is based on the daily work of the instrumentalist. Carbonare is dedicated in particular to the homogeneity, the intonation, the color and the ductility of the sound, characteristics often underestimated with respect to the speed of the fingers and the staccato. The book, with text in Italian, English and French, is divided into four parts: in the first there are vocalizations, in the second one the acute and the grave register are dealt, in the third the throat sounds of the left hand, in the fourth, finally , exercises on ecotones and ways of attack. A recommendation from the author: «A book alone can not succeed in improving such a delicate aspect as that of sound without your input. These exercises are just ideas, proposals; you will be later to complete according to our personal needs the studies that are suggested to you. Be inventive and do not passively study! »

This work which was written shortly after the Trumpet Sonata and the Five Pieces For Piano was first performed by Georgina Dobree and the composer at the 1957 Darmstadt Festival. The score was subsequently lost but wasrediscovered by Kevin Corner in 1983.'This is a dramatic emphatic and at times extravagant piece. The first movement is a Moderato reaching through wide-flung clarinet lines and keen piano gestures to a great climax near theend. Then comes a quick movement a kind of demonic scherzo including a cadenza for the clarinettist. The finale is an Adagio that gradually achieves a sort of simplicity though not before exceedingly testing times for bothplayers.Duration c. 25mins.

French composer and conductor Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) published Three Divertissements for Clarinet Quartet in 1964. As with his other wind compositions Three Divertissements was well-received by audiences. Tomasi was born in Marseille but his Father and Mother were originally from La Casinca in Corsica. Despite being pressured into musical studies by his parents Tomasi dreamed of becoming a sailor and during the summer he stayed with his Grandmother in Corsica where he learnt traditional Corsican songs. However in 1921 he began his studies at the Paris Conservatoire and went on to become ahigh profile composer and conductor. Tomasi did not forget his Corsican routes often incorporating themes of the songs he had learnt during the summers with his Grandmother into his compositions. The Three Divertissements are named; 1) Proceedings 2) Masquerade and 3) Rounds. This Tomasi piece is suitable to an advanced Clarinet Quartet providing an exciting alternative addition to the ensemble repertoire.
