In the summer of 1888 while also working on his tone poem Don Juan Richard Strauss composed this brief Andante for his father Franz Strauss a member of the Munich Court Opera and one of the greatest horn players of his age. The Andante was intended as the slow movement ???of a still unfinished??? sonata that Strauss however never did complete (to the chagrin of all horn players). The piece thus remained unpublished until 1973. For the new Urtext edition by G. Henle Publishers the original autograph manuscript held at the Munich Public Library was able to be examined directly. The Andante is of only moderate difficulty and is ideally suited for teaching purposes and as aneffective Romantic performance piece. German composer and Horn player Franz Strauss (1822-1905) is the Father of the great Richard Strauss on whom he was a huge influence. Remembered for a significant contribution to the Horn repertoire Franz Strauss' Les Adieux remains prominent in concert and recital programmes. Born in Bavaria Strauss was principal Horn player for the Bavarian Court Opera for more than 40 years as well as a teacher at the Royal School of Music in Munich. Les Adieux was among the composer's earlier compositions. The piece is a Romance meaning it is highly lyrical. Strauss' workaddresses chromaticism variety in key signatures and articulation as well as semiquaver flourishes and ornamentation. Les Adieux is a sublime work for Horn and Piano suitable for advanced players.
