The Yiddish word â??Klezmerâ?? has been derived from the Old Hebrew words â??...(+)
The Yiddish word â??Klezmerâ?? has been derived from the Old Hebrew words â??Kleyâ?? (tool instrument) and â??Zemerâ?? (song singing making music).Klezmer is the traditional music of Jews from Eastern Europe.Yiddish musicians (Klezmorim) were regularly invited to come and play at Yiddish weddings as well as several other Jewish celebrations and festive occasions. Despite its close connection with traditional Eastern European folk music Klezmer music has succeeded in preserving its distinctive Jewish character. â??Klezmer Discoveryâ?? is a voyage of discovery through the richly varied music of the Jewish people from Eastern Europe. The introduction consists of anumber of motives from different traditional melodies (a Mitzve Tenzel and Lâ??cha Dodi) followed by a melody in 3/8th time (Kandelâ??s Hora). This dance melody originally came from Bessarabia (present-day Moldavia) and was taken along to America by Jewish musicians round 1900. Subsequently â??Der Terk in Amerikaâ?? a composition by famous clarinet player Naftule Brandwein can be heard. A number of fast cheerful dance melodies (bulgars) form the finale of â??Klezmer Discoveryâ?? (Lebedyk un Freylekh Lomir sich iberbetn and Sherele).

Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa in 1451. His father was a wool merchant. Originally he seemed destined to follow in his father?s footsteps and thus sailed the oceans to countries as far apart as Iceland and Guinea. In 1476 his ship was sunk during a battle off the coast of Portugal. Columbus saved his own life by swimming to shore. In 1484 he conceived the idea of sailing to the Indies via a westward sea route but it was only in 1492 that he was able to realize this plan. On this first voyage he was in command of three ships: the flag-ship called the Santa Maria the Pinta and the Ni?a. From Spain Columbus sailed via the Canary Islands to the Bahamas whichhe sighted on October 12th 1492. Without being aware of it Columbus discovered the ?New World? ? he thought he had landed in the eastern part of Asia. The motif from Dvoøák?s 9th Symphony ?Aus der neuen Welt? forms a little counterfeit history at this point in the composition. After this first voyage Columbus was to undertake another three long voyages to America. These voyages were certainly not entirely devoid of misfortune. More than once he was faced with shipwreck mutiny and the destruction of settlements he had founded. After Columbus had left for Spain from Rio Belen in 1503 he beached his ships on the coast of Jamaica. The crew were marooned there and it was only after a year that Columbus succeeded in saving his men and sailing back to Spain with them. In the music the misunderstanding about which continent Columbus discovered in his lifetime resounds for does this part in the composition not contain Asiatic motifs? Poor Columbus! In 1506 the famous explorer died in Valladolid.

Everybody is familiar with the zoo. Remember all those animals? Big ones small ones. Water dwellers air-bound birds long legged hoppers creeping bugs. All animals seem to have their own peculiarities. Now Carl Wittrock (who also composed the world-famous master piece 'Lord Tullamore') invites you to join him in a musical exploration of the animal kingdom. An invitation you must not reject! In his 'A view at the Zoo' Wittrock presents ten distinctly different animals as compositions of music. You may be familiar with some of those animals such as the white swan or the butterfly but there are also more exotic breeds like the lion the monkey or theelephant. The composition as a whole is built around a structure of shorter fragments reminiscent of 'The Paintings Exhibition' by Moussorgsky. The parts are decorated with recognizable illustrations of the different animals. At each composition Wittrock looks for something that can fascinate both musicians and listeners. In this he succeeded extremely well.

A thoroughly gripping melody of Irish descent constitutes the basis on which this exceedingly beautiful little piece of music rests. Down by the Salley Gardens is a guaranteed heartbreaker on your next concert. Since the lyrics of this Irish traditional are also supplied with the set a combination of band with solo voice or even choir is a definite possibility. The Arranger: Leafing through a song-book containing traditionals etc. I was immediately struck by this song and its exceptionally beautiful and atmospheric melody. I simply had to do something with it.

Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) came from an aristocratic family which lived near Novgorod. When he appeared to be musically gifted as a child his parents did not hesitate one moment to map out a more honourable profession for him â he wasto make a career in the navy as a marine officer. Rimsky-Korsakov however succeeded in secretly studying the cello next to his studies at the Naval Academy at St Petersburg. Through his cello teacher he came into contact with the composerBalakirev. In this way he suddenly became a member of The Mighty Five (a group of Russian composers consisting of Balakirev Moussorgsky Cui Borodin and Rimsky-Korsakov himself). Rimsky-Korsakov turned out to be so talented that he evenbecame a teacher at the St Petersburg Conservatory.âProcession of the Noblesâ comes from the opera-ballet âMladaâ.The opera has a remarkable history for between 1868 and 1870 five different composers worked on this project. The finalresult was never executed however. Twenty years later Rimsky-Korsakov started work on the opera once more and composed his own version of Mlada. The theme of the opera is a tragic love story that is set in the early Middle Ages in a realm on theBaltic Sea. In âProcesssion of the Noblesâ all the princesses of the country gather for a grand feast on the occasion of the summer holidays.

Par PURCELL HENRY. Henry Purcells epitaph in the Westminster Abbey reads Here lyes Henry Purcell Esqre, who left this Lyfe and is gone to that Blessed Place where only his Harmony can be exceeded. Purcells setting of this melody composed by Frenchman Louis Bourgeois has been skillfully arranged for concert band by James Curnow. Delightfully characteristic Baroque counterpoint and harmonies form a great style study for your band while being a wonderful performance piece. Sostenuto passages, a controlled playing style, superb counterpoint, terraced dynamics and good activity for each wind section of the band may make this the perfect middle piece for your adjudicated band festival thisyear! / Niveau : 3 / Hymnes et chorals / Répertoire / Concert Band ou Harmonie

The popular Swedish children's series Pippi LÃ¥ngstrump (Pippi Longstocking) is about an exceedingly strong and strong-willed little girl with red braids - who is the brainchild of Astrid Lindgren. This series has been broadcasted in many countries. I arranged its cheerful theme tune in samba style. Even with the new rhythm the original song is still very recognizable. In the exuberant samba style the percussion plays an important role. Within the LÃ¥ngstrump Samba this is especially clear in the ad libitum percussion solo halfway through the arrangement. The solo can go on as long as desired and offers plenty of freedom because of the free choice of the instruments used.
