This ?Suite' is not one of my 'epic' instrumental concertos such as the concertos for cello, violin or oboe, but a substantially smaller-structured series of dance forms arranged into a suite. Sunken worlds suddenly emerge here, only to reach the surface, hover in dangerously distorted fashion and then sink back to the bottom.Almost every individual movement allots the solo flute a specific tonal colouring and an instrumental group from the orchestra: in the opening Allemande, the flutes of the orchestra (including alto and bass flute and later also piccolo to include the entire flute family) - the string section in the Sarabande - in both chorales (extremely muted in the first and brutalist in the second), the brass etc. - and it is only in the concluding Badinerie that all orchestral groups are combined, although they are terraced in the Baroque style, one following another, seldom all playing simultaneously.This permits the flute to remain the provider of all impulses - it attaches itself to the wide variety of instrumental colours, becomes suffused with these colours and thereby shines in different lights - acerbic, pale and radiant. This first performance marks the conclusion of my two-year residence with the Cleveland Orchestra. The immense versatility of this fine body of sound (which is indeed treated as such with the sum of its parts) and the exciting dark timbre of its principal flautist Joshua Smith have to a great extent determined the form and tonal character of my Flûte en suite. The Sinfonia No. 4, arranged for flute orchestra by Shaul Ben-Meir, is originally in the key of C minor but has been transposed up a whole step for this arrangement. Pour l'adorateur de Debussy que je suis depuis la plus rendre enfance, toucher à ces merveilles que sont les Préludes de Claude Debussy fut un cas de conscience. Le séduisant quatuor avec flûte, avec son trio à cordes, permet à un orchestrateur de métier d'infin ies nuances et dégradés : quatre instruments virtuoses, souvent polyphoniques, aux nombreuses irisations de timbre... Cependant, nous n'avons aucun modèle chez Debussy lui-même d'un tel travail, sinon son Quatuor à cordes (très antérieur) et sa Sonate pour flûte, alto et... harpe ! Sans ajouter une harpe (qui possède l'étendue du piano), impossible d'imaginer La Cathédrale Engloutie ou La Terrasse des audiences du clair de lune ... les résonances graves du piano, si poétiques, quasi magiques, ne pourraient être traduites par quatre instruments non résonants. J'ai donc dû choisir peu de Préludes, ne voulant pas trahir Debussy. Après une écoute intérieure très exigeante, et en me permettant, à la rigueur, quelques brèves octaviations de l'extrême-grave du piano, je me suis limité à six, trois dans chaque livre: 1er livre : - Des Pas sur la neige (n° 6) - La Sérénade interrompue (n° 9) - Minstrels (n° 12) 2e livre: - Bruyères (n°5) - Hommage à Sir Pickwick PPMPC (n° 9) - Canope (n° 10) Très vite, j'ai compris que partir du son-piano était une erreur; il valait mieux imaginer le Debussy des années 1910 orchestrant ces pièces pour une grande formation (du type Ibéria ou Jeux), puis réduire pour un petit orchestre de quatre instruments. D'où l'emploi de batteries (même à la flûte), de trémolos, de doublures étranges pour simuler les timbres absents, créer des illusions de polyphonie, si prisées des orchestrateurs français. J'espère n'en avoir pas abusé; j'ai essayé de mettre dans ces transcriptions toute l'imagination - tous les sons improbables - que Debussy aurait lui-même recherchés. In a letter dating from 1777 Mozart reported to his father from Mannheim that Johann Baptist Wendling principal Flautist of the famous Mannheim Orchestra had been approached by a wealthy Dutch businessman by the name of De Jean who was prepared to pay 200 gulden for three easy flute concertos and four flute quartets for his own use. Mozart accepted the commission. By the day before the Dutchman left Mozart had delivered only three of the quartets andtwo concertos for which he had been paid 964 gulden. The composer who was himself being pressed by his father to continue his own journey to Paris with his mother was full of excuses writing back to Salzburg on 14 February 'It is not surprising I have been unable to finish them for I never have a single hour's quiet here...Moreover you know I become quite powerless when I am obliged to write for an instrument I can't stand.' There is more than a hint of disingenuousness in Mozart's words for this was the height of the period during which he was being distracted from his work by his new-found love for the Mannheim singer Aloysia Weber. (He ultimatelymarried her sister Constanze.) If Mozart's dislike of the Flute was as great as he claimed there are few signs in the Flute Concerto No.1 in G major particularly in the expressive central Adagio ma non troppo. The outermovements are an Allegro maestoso and a concluding Rondo: Tempo di Menuetto. The work is scored for two oboes (replaced by flutes in the Adagio) two horns and strings. Arrangeur: David Overton. Par GALWAY JAMES. This collection of songs were written and arranged for Sir James Galway as concert pieces by David Overton, his longtime arranger. They are all based to some extent on traditional Irish Melodies. The first three are contrasting tunes: 'Spinning Song,” the beautiful slow melody 'She moved through the fair,” and the more up-tempo 'Star of the County Down.” These were so successful in the original flute and piano version, as printed here, that Overton was requested to write versions for strings and for orchestra, which were equally successful and have formed a regular part of Galway's concert repertoire. 'Badinereelerie” is more light-hearted work, first written for Sir James Galway in 1984. Since then, he has played it countless times as printed here, and in a version for flute and orchestra. The surprising mixture of Bach (and Handel and others) with reels and Irish traditional tunes, and even a few English traditional tunes thrown in for good measure, has delighted audiences all over the world. Pipe Dreams follows one of Vine’s preferred architectures: a single movement with three sections in the classic ‘moderate-slow-fast’ form.
