ACTIONS,
INTERPOLATIONS AND
ANALYSES, symphonies for
bass-clarinet and large
ensemble (1987-90), is
what is commonly termed a
work in progress. So far
Schaathun has completed
three of five parts. The
is the composer's first
large-scale attempt to
investigate possible
connections between
ostensibly unrelated
material. Explained in
simple terms, it involves
taking two of Schaathun's
own type of texture
(composed by means of
different techniques) and
letting them rotate
around a familiar musical
object (in this case a
short excerpt from
Stravinskij's Symphonies
of Wind instruments in
which he employs the
famous frozen chords). In
the course of the piece
the elements takes over
various characteristics
from one another and the
form progresses from
fairly clear-cut textures
to a situation where the
various textures are
superimposed, creating a
dramatic flow. On a more
advanced level, the piece
is about trying to
mediate between different
musical textures as
metaphors for the
different levels of the
sound itself. One of the
main questions in this
context is; What is size
in music? Is it possible
to take a small
chord(i.e. narrow
register, few
instruments, simple tone
colours) and then blow it
up (wide register, many
instruments, advanced
mixtures) in such a way
that the listener still
perceives it as the same
chord? You have simply
moved closer to the
sound. At any rate, when
Schaathun composed the
piece, he himself
travellig into the sound,
as if were viewing a
texture from a distance.
He then recomposed the
same situation and drew
closer, and then
recompose it a third time
and simply get close
enough to discover the
world of sounds that thus
emerged. A world of
sounds capable of
travelling at a
tremendous speed...
However, like all
concertos, the piece is
of course about the
individual and his
relationship to his
surroundings (society).
Schaathun has often
pondered on the reason
for this preoccupation
wih solo concertos. The
answer derives from his
firm conviction that
nothing would ever happen
if it weren't for the
initiative, the Action,
of the individual.

Performance
Notes: The handbell
arrangements in this
collection have been
composed for use
specifically with the We
Celebrate hymnal
published by WLP. The
hymn tunes used, as well
as their harmonizations,
are commonly found in
same form in many
hymnals. The bell peal is
intended to be used as
part of an introduction
to the hymn. The pattern
may be repeated as many
times as necessary, and
is to be followed by an
organ/instrumental
introduction that leads
to the singing of the
hymn. The peal could be
rung from a stationary
position, or could be a
processional (movement)
by a small group of
ringers. For
processionals, parts
enter from lowest to
highest, or in any
preferred order. Each
part may be repeated as
needed before the next
part enters. The final
chord is rung together
when the procession is
completed.

A
quiet, six-minute
composition of four
variations on the German
chorale tune MUNICH,
adapted by Mendelssohn,
that is commonly
associated with the text
O Word of God Incarnate.
Written in D Major, the
melody is first presented
on a soft solo reed in
meter. A chromatic
variation without pedal
in B minor is next,
followed by one in which
each phrase is repeated
an octave higher, and
finally by a return to
the solo stop that
augments and embellishes
the melody. The harmonies
are pleasing and the tune
easy to follow.

I
have always been
fascinated with the
concept of archangels -
huge, supernatural beings
with gigantic wings who
visit earth to carry out
their heavenly tasks.
Archangels are the chief
angels in Judeo-Christian
and Islamic religions.
The precise number of
these high-ranking
celestial beings varies
from one religious source
to another (typically
from four to seven). The
three movements of
Archangels depict
Michael, Raphael, and
Gabriel - the three
archangels most commonly
referenced. Michael is a
warrior who is ever
vigilant to march into
battle against forces of
evil. In art, he is often
portrayed with his wings
spread open in mid-flight
and wielding a large
sword that is raised into
an attack position. The
first movement begins in
darkness with the
foreboding sound of his
large, beating wings.
Suddenly, Michael appears
in all of his terrible
glory and wreaks havoc on
an army of demons.
Raphael is a Hebraic name
that translates to God
heals, and he is in
charge of all manners of
healing. Artwork of
Raphael typically shows
him holding a staff, and
he is often pictured with
the round cheeks
associated with a young
cherub. In this quiet
middle movement, Raphael
gently makes his rounds
to tend to the sick.
Gabriel is the heralder
of news. In Christianity,
Gabriel's purpose is
quite significant: he
appears to Zechariah to
announce the forthcoming
birth of John the
Baptist, and to Mary to
announce the forthcoming
birth of Jesus. Gabriel
is often depicted holding
a scepter, a stem of
lilies, or an unfurled
scroll. In this final
movement of the piece,
Gabriel trumpets his news
for all to hear.
