I am Cello is one of several solo pieces by means of which the Australian-based composer remained in contact with her interpreters all over the world during the time of the coronavirus pandemic, composing and communicating via video and streaming. It was written for the cellist Benedict Kloeckner and produced by him at the SWR Studio Kaiserslautern in autumn 2020 and released on CD by Brilliant Classics the following year. The requirement to write something short to be played between the Bach Solo Suites alongside the music of other composers quickly gave rise to the idea of a piece that “is almost a song and tells almost a story. It is also almost a waltz, but a slow one. I see this piece like a flower bulb that opens up over the course of 2-3 minutes,” says Elena Kats-Chernin.

As a young professional player in the 1960s, my work as a double bassist with chamber ensembles and small orchestras took me all over the world. This presented an unparalleledopportunity to scour libraries and archives wherever I went. Long before the advent of the photocopier and e-mail, research was far more challenging than it is today. Eastern Europe was particularly difficult to access, withmanycollections kept under lock and key for all but a few hours a week. One quickly found colleagues who were keen to share information gleaned in passing, even though they had no specific interest in one's own particularspecialism (it is so often the peripheral topics that fascinate as much as the main subject under investigation, and one can quickly be side-tracked into political and social issues that have only slender bearing on the job inhand!).

In the early 1970s James Brown, the then sub-principal oboist of the English Chamber Orchestra with whom I was working at the time, stumbled across a small collection of double bass manuscripts at the RoyalDanish State Library in Copenhagen. They were by Franz Anton Leopold Keÿper (b. c.1756, d. Copenhagen 7 June 1815), a double bassist of Dutch origin who worked as principal of the Royal Chapel Orchestra in Copenhagen.Keÿper's son was the bassoonist Franz Jacob August Keÿper (1792-1859). The collection included a number of concertos, some chamber music, and various naïve fragments. Although hardly the work of a Mozart or Haydn,the style is characteristic of the period. For an instrument such as the double bass, whose 18th century solo repertoire is largely written for tunings that are no longer in everyday use, Keÿper's music is easily approachablein its.

Wir schlüpfen in die Haut von Miguel und reisen mit ihm nach Australien. Einigermaßen entfremdet von seiner spanischen Heimat schlendert er durch das Viertel The Rocks in Sydney. Auf einem kleinen Markt entdeckt er einen Druck des Gemäldes Pacific Dreams von William DeShazo. Das Bild stellt die Meeresbrandung auf einer exotischen Insel im Pazifik dar. Während die eindrucksvolle Harbour Bridge von Sidney vor ihm auftaucht, ist er in Gedanken bei den heißen Stränden im Stillen Ozean. Auf einmal kommt ihm das Thema in den Sinn, das er einst über die Gewässer Japans komponiert hatte. Liegt es an den asiatischen Einflüssen, die im kosmopolitischen Sydney so vielfältig vertretensind? Oder sind es die Wasser rund um Sydney, über die er nach Tahiti segeln könnte? Er ist sich unsicher. Könnte er genau dieses Thema für eine neue Komposition über die Metropole Sydney verwenden? Wie sollte er seine Träume vom Pazifik, seine Pacific Dreams, in diese Mixtur einbringen? Vielleicht könnte er den Wortschatz von Inseln wie Hawaii und Tahiti für seine Komposition verwenden. Und einen gemischten Chor die schönen Vokalverbindungen ad libitum singen lassen. Mit diesen Ideen im Kopf steigt er in die Metro am Circular Quay. Auf ins Hotel und frisch ans Werk! Jetzt muss er einfach komponieren....

Pacific Dreams descrive l’esperienza di Miguel, un compositore spagnolo che, stanco della vita nella terra natia, parte per un viaggio a Sydney dove scopre una stampa raffigurante i cavalloni del Pacifico. Improvvisamente Miguel ricorda un tema composto in precedenza sui laghi giapponesi. E’ l’influenza asiatica presente nella cosmopolita Sydney che porta questo tema alla mente? Oppure è l’acqua attorno a Sydney sulla quale si può navigare verso Tahiti? Non si sa, ma Miguel avverte l’immediato bisogno di rientrare in albergo e comporre….

Lennox Berkeley was born in 1903 and died in 1989. After reading modern languages at Oxford he had no intention of becoming a composer until he met Ravel in 1926, who encouraged him to study in Paris with Nadia Boulanger. He stayed in Paris until 1932, developing his own musical language. In 1936, after the death of his mother, he went to Barcelona for the International Society for Contemporary Music festival where he met Benjamin Britten. The two lived together at Snape in Suffolk for a while until the outbreak ofwar, before Berkeley moved back to London to work for the BBC. Here he met his future wife Freda Bernstein. He taught at the Royal Academy of Music in London from 1946 until 1968, where his pupils included Richard Rodney Bennett, Nicholas Maw and John Tavener, among others. He was knighted in 1974.

In early February 1971 I was playing in a concert at St. John's Smith Square, London, then only relatively recently restored as a superb venue for music. The programme, which I believe was being broadcast, included Berkeley's Serenade Op.12. It was a work I had always enjoyed playing and was standard string orchestra repertoire at the time. There was initially no platform at St. John's and so the audience sat virtually on top of the performers. So close were they on this occasion that I had to ask for a little more room in order to play. At the end of the piece the orchestra acknowledged the applause and the gentleman who I had all but practically decapitated with my over-enthusiastic playing, stood up and took a bow. I had been almost playing in Lennox Berkeley's lap! The opportunity was too good to miss and I wasted little time in introducing myself. Mr Berkeley said that he had been fascinated by my playing and asked me to write to him about a possible commission.

Snow Gum by Fran Griffin for Two Flutes and Guitar. Alto and Bass Flutes are required for the performance of this piece. From the composer: In the wilderness of the Australian Alps, there is only one tree, the Snow Gum (eucalyptus pauciflora) that lives above 1600 metres. Snow Gums are experiencing severe dieback, caused by attack by a native beetle. Strangely, the beetle and the Snow Gums have coexisted for thousands of years, but now the Snow Gums are no longer able to withstand the hunger of the beetles. As yet the reasons for this are unknown. Huge areas of these once magnificent and colourful trees now stand grey and dead. In this piece I am depicting the gnarled and twisted trunks of the still living trees with their wonderfully coloured bark, in contrast to the ruggedness and desolation of the terrain. One can hear the alpine wind rushing through the leaves and branches, shaking snow to the ground..

Composer's notes: This piece came about in a rather unusual way. I had a dream in which a string quartet were playing some very beautiful music. I was exhorting them to 'play it like late Beethoven' When I woke up, I could not remember any themes or details of what they had been playing, but had an intense memory of the 'feeling' of the music, which was soft, sensual and muted, and I immediately sat down to write a string quartet. What began to emerge was nothing like Beethoven at all, and very early into the writing I had a strong vision of some people dancing a formal and intense series of dances in a village in a very dry and hot landscape - the Australian outback or Africa maybe. The dances were very moving, with an inward, ritualistic quality and they obviously had great meaning for the people performing them. Geoffrey Burgon

A tribute to the inspirational Brazilian guitarist Yamandu Costa, Shanghai is Australian slang for a slingshot. This is a term I remember from my childhood in north Queensland where a shanghai made from sticks and rubber was a prized possession for a young boy up to mischief. When pulled back the rubber stretches, and as it snaps back into shape, a stone or other form of ammunition is projected into the distance. This action reminds me of the dynamic and joyful qualities of Yamandu Costa’s performances. Shanghai aims to capture some of the energy, playfulness and musical expression Yamandu brings to everything he plays.

Hommage au guitariste brésilien Yamandu Costa, « Shanghai » est un argot australien désignant une fronde. C'est un terme dont je me souviens de mon enfance dans le nord du Queensland, où un « Shanghai » fabriqué à partir de bâtons et de caoutchouc était un bien précieux pour un jeune garçon prêt à faire des bêtises. Lorsqu'il est retiré, le caoutchouc s'étire et, lorsqu'il reprend sa forme, une pierre ou une autre forme de munition est projetée au loin. Cette action me rappelle les qualités dynamiques et joyeuses des performances de Yamandu Costa. Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen 's Four Madrigals From The Natural World for 6-12 part mixed chorus. This piece incorporates texts by Les Murray. ' FOUR MADRIGALS to texts by the Australian poet Les Murray are composed of two songs (Bats' Ultrasound and The Octave of Elephants) written for the Australian vocal group THE SONG COMPANY, and two songs (Cattle Egret and Comete) from my larger work SOUND / SIGHT, written for the Danish Radio Chamber Choir, but here arranged for six voices. The texts are pictures and situations from - or meditations over - THE NATURAL WORLD. Les Murray's way of approaching this world is not in the least sentimentalor nostalgic: the poems reveal a truebeing-out-there realism: so basically the approach is realistic, but the creating of form elevates the material to an abstractplay, a daring and exuberant poetic language. These poems asked to be set to music. I gave up old idiosyncrasies regarding descriptive music, and surrendered to the madrigal, with its special so-called madrigalisms, which entails also animal-imitations.
