Begin
ning with an ethereal
effect created by quartal
harmony and mallets, the
composer paints a gentle,
serene landscape of
Christmas love. The work
begins in C major,
reaches a climactic

ebbs quietly away with
material drawn from the

Songs of
Love and Solace traces a
young man's journey of
love and heartbreak. The
cycle of four texts by
Irish poet William Butler
Yeats begins with Brown
Penny. This short poem
depicts a young man
infatuated with the idea
of falling in love, and
then becoming awestruck
as he contemplates the
depths of love’s power.
In the second poem, He
Wishes for the Cloths of
Heaven, the poet,
speaking to his beloved,
realizes he has nothing
of value to offer but his
dreams. Tread softly, he
implores, because you
tread on my dreams.” In
When You Are Old, we find
our poet heartbroken. In
his grief he peers into
the future and foresees
his beloved, in old age,
remembering the depth and
purity of their forsaken
love: “But one man love
the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of
your changing face.” In
the final song, The Lake
Isle of Innisfree,” the
poet, saddened but wiser,
wistfully resolves to
escape the struggles and
heartbreaks of his modern
existence, and seek
solace in the beauty and
calm of nature. Songs may
be performed separately.

Commissioned by
King’s Chapel,
Boston, Massachusetts, in
celebration of its 325th
anniversary, this longer
a cappella work uses a
text assembled and
adapted from various
Biblical passages. From
the composer's
introduction: The anthem
begins grandly with words
from Psalm 89 celebrating
God’s
all-encompassing
faithfulness and love. An
alleluia refrain follows
and returns several times
throughout the work.
However, it is not a
majestic, Handelian
alleluia, but rather one
of inward passion and
fervent introspection.
The next section begins
joyously with the
familiar prophesy from
Zechariah; it is followed
by several brief Gospel
scenes from the life of
Jesus. After another
alleluia, words of
blessing from Psalm 103
are set vigorously before
the work closes with a
final alleluia. Recorded

A universal
message of sharing the
love of Christ in
adventurous obedience to
His guiding Spirit brings
purpose to this sermon in
song. The anthem begins
with a hymn-like opening
of dignity and reverence.
The tune soon begins to
flow, calling the child
of God to service:
“Help us be Your
hands in a world that
needs compassion. Help us
feed the hungry and
comfort those in
need.” A strong
challenge to the modern
church clothed in
memorable themes and
strong harmonies. A song
for our time!

A lovely,
flowing melody that
begins in unison, then
expands to an a cappella
verse in four parts.
Finally, the altos and
basses sing mostly unison
against a soaring descant
in the soprano and tenor
parts. A great piece for
Communion.

It was first performed on
25 April 2010 by Osumi

title is an affectionate
reference to the commuter

West Japan Railway

started their activity,
the 207 series trains
began running through the
fields next to the
building where they
practice. The composer
hopes that the trains
continue to run and bring
smiles to people’s
faces.
