Since the 1980s scholarly research into Reger has built up a picture of the diversity, complexity and variety of Reger's work and shown that the composer was the first to depart from the supposed logical evolution of music history. In the musical scene, on the other hand, ideas prevail that are clichéd and based on a small canon of works. This is now about to change.Since the beginning of the twenty-first century a thematic catalogue of the works of Max Reger and their sources has been put together in the Max-Reger-Institut Karlsruhe funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. This will be a fitting addition to our series of thematic catalogues of the works of Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin and Schumann. It contains in-depth information in a readable form on the complete original works and arrangements, both published and unpublished, completed or fragmentary. Information concerning the genesis, place and state of the handwritten and printed sources are presented comprehensively and reflect the current state of research. Thus not only scholars but also performers, music lovers and concert organizers will be able to get to know Reger's neglected but in many ways surprising works.Numerous indexes will make the Reger Thematic Catalogue easy and clear to use and it has all of the prerequisites to soon become the definitive reference work for Max Reger. / Orchestre

Four Pieces For Orchestra was composed by Hans Abrahamsen in 2000-2003. Programm...(+)
Four Pieces For Orchestra was composed by Hans Abrahamsen in 2000-2003. Programme note: In 1983 Hans Abrahamsen wrote the first seven of his Ten Studies for Piano. In the early eighties most composers who wrote for the piano were still making strenuous efforts to distance themselves from the instrument?s romantic past for example treating it as a percussion instrument rather than exploiting its expressive ?singing? potential. The piano?s modern identity as a mechanical rational emotionally cool instrument is reflected in Abrahamsen?s studies 5 7; but in the first four studies Abrahamsen allows the piano to?recollect? its past: especially what the composer calls ?the golden German romantic time full of expression night timelessness dream and the irrational?. Accordingly these first four studies were given German one might specifically say Schumanesque - titles: Traumlied (?Dreamsong?) Sturm (?Storm?) Arabeske (?Arabesque?) and Ende (?End?). While Abrahamsen was in no way dissatisfied with the first four Studies as piano music he soon felt the urge to expand them in both time and space. In their new identity as Four Pieces for Orchestra created between 2000-2003 the original studies nearly doubled in length while the forces required expanded from one soloist to an orchestra of Mahlerian/Straussian dimensions including instruments beloved by the late-romantics: Wagner tubas bass trumpet guitar mandolin and the hammer used so memorably in Mahler?s Sixth Symphony and Alban Berg?s Three Pieces for Orchestra. The results are not so much ?arrangements? of the four piano studies more recompositions. A helpful comparison might be made with certain painters: Cézanne portraying the same mountain from different angles; or Monet obsessively returning to Rouen Cathedral in different lights and weather conditions. Abrahamsen himself remembers an important visit to the Munch Museum in Oslo where he saw how Munch painted the same subject

Par EICHBERG NILS SOREN. „Oryx and Crake“ tells the story of the only human survivor on Earth. In flash-backs, revealing only bit by bit, we must ourselves put together the pieces of the drama that lead to the apocalypse. The opera unfolds within 24 hours, beginning at dawn and finishing the next morning.
Atwood’s love-triangle offers plenty of classic music drama, her dystopia is painted in complex, industrial soundscapes and the post-armageddon solitude in contemporary-contemplative open spaces. Electronics extend and augment the orchestral colours and help achieving the unreal „haunted“ atmosphere and the different reality levels of the protagonist’s memory. / Date parution : 2023-10-31/ Répertoire / Orchestre

Fantasia In C Minor Op.80 (Choral Fantasy)-This volume contains two of Beethoven's most unusual highly innovative and original works: the Concerto in C Major Op. 56 for piano violin cello and orchestra; and the Fantasia in C Minor Op. 80 for piano chorus and orchestra. To this day the 'Triple Concerto' remains part of a rare breed in the literature--a fascinating symphonic framework of interaction between the classical orchestra and a trio of intimately interdependent soloists. The work remains a favorite vehicle of the great Beethoven specialists with numerous recordings by legendary performers. The 'Choral Fantasy' is a rarity in the Beethoven canon of ensemble music uniting thevirtuoso display of a semi-improvisational solo piano with the vocal and instrumental richness of chorus and orchestra. Said to have been composed under great time pressure the Fantasy concludes with an extensive choral setting of a text by an unknown poet: 'Schmeichelnd hold und lieblich klingen' ('Flatteringly lovely and fair are the sounds of our life?s harmonies...Accept gladly the gifts of beautiful art...').Reprinted from the authoritative Breitkopf & Härtel editions this volume offers musicians and music lovers an inexpensive high-quality full score of two exceptional works.

While he was working on it fate struck a second time with the death of his beloved wife Otilie. He dedicated the five-movement symphony to Dvorák and his daughter Otilie and named it after the Angel of Death ?Asrael?.The principal source for our edition is the first edition of the score (1907) supplemented by the corrections Suk entered at the suggestion of conductor Václav Talich (1921). The 35-minute orchestral suite Book of Visions was co-commissioned by the Orchestre National de Belgique NHK Symphony Orchestra and Royal Scottish National Orchestra and received its premiere in Brussels on 15 April 2005 conducted by Mikko Franck. The work consists of four orchestral tales of night fire love and fate. Each aims to extract the essence of the phenomenon not in a descriptive way but rather as perceived by the composer metaphysically an approach akin to that of his series of ‘Angel’ works. Although no exact narrative is intended the final tale inevitably suggests autobiographical elements as its composition was violently interruptedby a near-fatal heart attack in January 2004.

Vaughan Williams wrote Symphony No. 8 between 1953 and 1955 while in his eighties. It is his shortest symphony and considered by many to be his least serious. Aside from a few sombre moments the symphony is optimistic in mood and displays Vaughan Williams' love for exotic and colourful combinations of instruments with a percussion section that he said employs 'all the 'phones and 'spiels known to the composer'. 'Acquainted with Night' is a cycle of six songs for alto and strings harp and timpani. The texts are all concerned with different aspects of night. The first song ‘Lullaby’ to a poem by Beaumont and Fletcher seeks to evokethe ‘care-charming’ powers of sleep. The second a setting of Robert Frost’s ‘Acquainted with the night’ is concerned with the lonely world of a strange city at night and the music is characterised by an insistently repeatedfigure in the accompaniment. The third song contrasts the calmness of the night with the turbulence in a lover’s mind - the poem is by the Earl of Surrey. ‘Out in the dark’ a poem by Edward Thomas is the text of the fourthsong. It is in the form of a scherzo and deals with the mystery and strangeness of night and as the poet puts it the ‘might’ of night. It is as the poet says a hymn to night and the chordal nature of the accompanimentsuggests this quality. This song leads directly into the last which is in fact a reprise of the opening ‘Lullaby’ so completing the cycle.

Study Score No. 127-Charles Fussel's Three Processionals for Orchestra.Three Processionals is drawn from ideas contained in an earlier work by the composer Voyages based on the poetry of HartCrane.'In this work I was interested in connecting Hart Crane's use of sea images as a basic vocabulary for his cycle of love poems with Debussy's orchestral sea poem La Mer. The third processional concludes with adirect quote from Debussy. Hart Crane's poems in their profound concentrated language first warn the child that his beautiful and joyous seashore games touch a vast ocean whose depths are cruel And in the following poem loveitself is the great force which sweeps over and moves every aspect of life. To survive this 'tidal wedge' is a fearful and exhilarating struggle and we are frequently 'over-taken' by its power plus the knowledge of ourlimits'. - Charles Fussel

Faksimile Der Autographen Partitur In Der Bibliotheque Nationale De France-Facsimile of the autograph score held in the Bibliothèque nationale de FranceDocumenta musicologica II/532920 pp. of facsimile and 12 pp. of Commentary (Eng/Ger/French)Half-leather binding Love and insanity tenderness and vulgarity bordering on the grotesque: Hector Berlioz never avoided extremes neither in his life nor in his oeuvre. His entire Symphonie fantastique is pervaded by a musical ?idée fixe? representing a woman he adored. The symphony brought about his breakthrough and has remained popular ever since. The impact of his masterly approach to composition especially in the treatment of theorchestration could still be felt in the 20th century. Berlioz revised the work for years before it finally reached its definitive version. He entered many of these changes in the autograph score which was also used for performances by pasting strips of paper over the bars or parts in question. This facsimile edition in high-quality four-colour reproduction presents the manuscript as it is today ? with strips of paper that can be folded out making both versions visible. Hugh Macdonald General Editor of the New Berlioz Edition explains the work?s genesis and presents particular passages from each movement.

Dramma per musica in thre acts-Rodelinda Regina de' Longobardi HWV 19; Opera in three acts. After Giulio Cesare and Tamerlano Rodelinda is the third masterly opera that Handel composed between December 1723 and January 1725. The words were written by Nicola Haym the author of many other Handel librettos. The first performance took place at the King’s Theatre in the Haymarket London on 13 February 1725. Rodelinda thrives entirely on the ethical supremacy of conjugal love and thus prefigures the great operas by Gluck and Beethoven on the same subject. The plot is taken from the history of the Lombard royalty. Oskar Hagen’s revival of Rodelinda in 1920 ushered in the modern Handel operamovement. The work forms the climax to a series of dramatic masterpieces that includes Handel’s most significant operas. Handel returned to Rodelinda on two occasions in December 1725 and in May 1731. Many far-reaching changes were necessary owing to the different skills of the new singers. For example Handel wrote three new arias and a duet for the first revival. Yet the changes he made for this performance doubtless to accommodate the needs and wishes of the singers also improve the work’s dramatic substance. Our vocal score is based on the Urtext of the full score published in the Halle Handel Edition (II/16) and reproduces the various alternative readings and versions in an appendix. When Beethoven received a commission from Vienna’s Burgtheater to compose stage music for Goethe’s tragedy Egmont in 1809 he viewed it as a great honour. The impetus would have been all the stronger sincethe drama about a Dutch nobleman who falls victim to a plot by a Spanish ruler from the outset provided for music at several points. Beethoven repeatedly declared later on that he had received no honorarium from thetheatre’s management but had written the music “solely out of love for the poet”. The overture became separated from the rest of the incidental music very early on; it was separately published and soon performedas a concert piece independent of the stage tragedy. We now issue it as a study score based on the text of the Beethoven Complete Edition and with a new preface.

Schumann’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in A Minor Op. 54 is fine example of Romanticism and has a dynamic mood like much of his work. There is a sober atmosphere though dignified melody runs throughout but overall a unified and structured piece that broke away from the trend for virtuosic displays. Completed in 1845 when he appended two movements to the revised Fantasie; it is one of a handful of larger works by Schumann. The finished concerto premiered on New Year's Day of 1846 by the composer's wife and pianist Clara Wieck Schumann. Eulenberg's celebrated and highly authoritative miniature score is the definitive reference source for study performancepreparation or simply for those with a love of the great orchestral works.

Symphony No. 8 In G Major Op. 88. With its Bohemian echoes and thematic diversity, Symphony No. 8 enjoys a special status among lovers of Antonín Dvorák's music.
For a long time, the performance material for this work has been notorious for its myriad mistakes. For his edition of Dvorák's 8th Symphony, editor Jonathan Del Mar was therefore faced with the task of making comprehensive corrections. He has taken into account the engraver?s copy, which was actually discovered in a trash bin at Novello?s in 1964. Its title page bears the words ?Copied from my original manuscript? in Dvorák?s hand. This source proves that many of the readings contained in the first edition and faithfully adopted in all subsequent editions, were simply slips of the copyist?s pen.
This study score edition is complemented by the full score and orchestral parts (BA10418).
