Gluck Complete Edition V/2. Par GLUCK CHRISTOPH WILLIBALD. While Christoph Willibald Gluck dedicated his artistic life almost entirely to the composition of works for the opera stage, he also produced a number of instrumental works which have been somewhat marginalized until recently. This volume of the 'Gluck Complete Edition” (GGA) is the first to present 17 symphonies attributed to Gluck in a historical-critical edition - furthermore, the volume includes a new version of one of the trio sonatas published in 1961 as part of the GGA.
Current research indicates that no reliable information about the genesis of the respective works exists for any of the symphonies attributed to Gluck. This is due to a lack of both autograph sources and reliable data pertaining to the history and first performances of these works. It is assumed that some of the existing symphonies might in fact be the lost overtures of Gluck's earlier operas. Others were possibly written to be performed in private or public concerts.
The greatest challenge for the editors of this volume was posed by the question of authenticity and authorship of the works presented here. As no autographs exist for any of the symphonies bearing Gluck's name, the only indicators of authorship are attributions in the copies of score and parts, either original or added at a later time. The reliability of these attributions for individual works largely depends on the respective state of source material, meaning available sources as well as the condition of the respective copy. A thorough authenticity analysis concluded Gluck's authorship as valid in the case of 13 symphonies, while in the case of four other symphonies, diverging attributions lead to the acceptance of open authorship. As a result, this volume includes all compositions for which, according to the most current research, Gluck's authorship has not been refuted.
In the case of two symphonies, one concerto for flute, and six trio sonatas published in 1961 as part of the GGA, Gluck's authorship has been disproven - detailed explanations are included in the volume's Foreword (Ger). The Foreword also discusses the individual instrumental works attributed to Gluck by various encyclopedias. In addition to the detailed Foreword, the volume includes facsimiles of representative source excerpts. The Critical Commentary (Ger) analyzes the state of sources and includes extensive information on editorial principles and performance practice./ Répertoire / Orchestre

As opposed to the earlier chamber work Nightshade which dealt with extremes of high and low pitches and the chamber orchestra composition Second Nightshade a two-fold piece contrasting darkness/anxiety and light/calm Final Nightshade for full symphony orchestra takes us on a journey in which the forces of dark and light struggle - and co-exist - in a predominantly polyphonic web with brooding undertones. The melodic point-of-departure is not surprisingly to be found in either of the two preceding pieces of the Trilogy but in an older piece Corpus Cum Figuris from 1985. Over the ensuing years I've dreamt on and off of 'doing something' with the opening measures of this older work perhaps even building a new composition on that very simple inward-looking time was ripe and there's a nice nostalgia angle to the idea: Corpus Cum Figuris was the first piece of mine to be

Full Score-The Persian traditional music (called the Dastgah Segah) is based on ...(+)
Full Score-The Persian traditional music (called the Dastgah Segah) is based on intervals made of three quarter-tones and natural whole-tones. Segah has no interval in common with the European/ Western equal-temperament tuning. This lack of common intervalsbetween the Segah mode and the equal-temperament tuning will lead to a cognitive dissonance if this mode is set against the equal-temperament system. My goal has been to elaborate on the innate tensions that exists between the two interval systemsand use it as a symbol for the existing political and cultural tensions between the Persian and the Western cultures. The piece consists of two Persian traditional instruments the Ney (Persian vertical bamboo flute) and the Kamanche (Persian spikefiddle) as the musical representatives of the Persian culture set against the Western orchestra as the musical representative of the Western culture. A small ensemble of Western instruments consisting of a harp and string quintet accompanies thePersian instruments. The harp is tuned to the Segah intervals and the string quintet plays in the Segah mode. The orchestra is performing inthe Western equal- temperament tuning. From the very first bars of the main section of the piece confusionsand misunderstandings arise. The orchestra being unable to play in Segah or understand the mode becomes more and more agitated. Musical tensions between the soloists and the orchestra lead to musical confrontations and finally to musicalviolence. The orchestra becomes extremely violent and militaristic and tries to suppress the soloists efforts to express their musical thoughts. In the midst of all these confusions and cultural misunderstandings musical connections and attractionsstart to take place. The orchestra and the soloists find themselves musically attracted to each other and start imitating each others musical phrases. Cognitive dissonances start to be gradually transformed to musical dialogues symbolizing thegradual replacement of the clash of civilizations with the dialogue of civilizations. Segah was written for Khosrow and Kian Soltani and premiered at the Segah Festival on January 15 2016.

Les Fleuves Et Les Monts
(DUFOURT HUGUES)

Galánta is a small Hungarian market-town known to the travellers from Vienna to Budapest. The composer has passed there seven years of his childhood. There existed at that time a famous Gipsy-band which has disappeared in the meantime. Their music was the first 'orchestral sonority' which came to the ear of the child. The forbears of these gipsies were known already more than hundred years ago. About 1800 some books of Hungarian dances were published in Vienna, one of which contained music 'after several gipsies from Galantha'. They have preserved the old Hungarian tradition. In order to continue it the composer has taken his principal subjects from these ancient editions. (Zoltán Kodály, 1934)
“Dances from Galánta” is now available in the New Conductor Score series. These completely redesigned scores stand out due to their carefully researched critical report and a highly legible, clean notation, all in the trusted Universal Edition quality./ Répertoire / Orchestre

Symphonic Fragment for Orchestra. Par SHCHEDRIN RODION. Emotional depth and rive...(+)
Symphonic Fragment for Orchestra. Par SHCHEDRIN RODION. Emotional depth and riveting virtuosity - these elements are what characterise many compositions by Rodion Shchedrin. Even though he has been a cosmopolitan for a long time, the Moscow-born Shchedrin has remained an original Russian composer whose bond with the musical folklore and poetry of his home country has never been severed.
This 'Symphonic Fragment', premiered by Mariss Jansons with the Symphony Orchestra of the Bavarian Radio, refers to the life of Beethoven and the first major existential crisis of the then 31-year-old composer from Vienna. Even if Shchedrin fails to include explicit quotations, suggestions of Beethoven's 'Eroica' can well be found. The study score on sale now allows one to become thoroughly acquainted with Shchedrin's masterly skills as a composer and his virtuoso treatment of the orchestra in this work./ Répertoire / Orchestre

The Enchanted Forest. Par HENZE HANS WERNER. This music is taken from the second...(+)
The Enchanted Forest. Par HENZE HANS WERNER. This music is taken from the second act of my early opera King Stag. In the original, the aria - here rescored for the orchestra alone - is sung by the protagonist (tenor) who yearns to return to the woods, to nature, to the origins of his animal existence.
The rondo is set in a very fast dance tempo (a Tarantella?) and is in three parts: the first one is cheerful and comic, the second one lyrical, almost romantically so, whereas the third one is impetuous and dramatic. The music of both pieces has been considerably rewritten and altered, in harmonic, melodic and rhythmic aspects.

Per Nørgård's Symphony No. 4 (1981) - Indischer Roosengaarten und Chineesischer Hexensee (Indian Rose Garden and Chinese Witch See). Programme Note: This symphony in two movements entitles “Indischer Roosen-Gaarten und Chineesischer Hexensee” was inspired by Adolf Wölfli’s works - consisting of 20.000 pages of prose poetry and pictures -. An English translation of the title would read: “Symphony no. 4 - Indian Rose Garden and Chinese Witch See; after an idea by Adolf Wölfli (1864-1930) and dedicated to him.” Wölfli was from 1895 (31 yearsold) until his death in 1930 confined to the mental hospital at Waldau near Bern Switzerland. Although he had no technical knowledge of music he considered himself to be a great composer and his paintings were almost always covered with long festoons of six-lined (!) music staffs. In 1912 Wölfli ordered paints and paper for a planned ´Musikbüchlein´ which was to be published in 1920 under the title “Indischer Roosen-Gaarten und Chineesischer Hexensee”. (Wölfi uses his characteristic illustrative phonetic spellings with double vowels). The work was never completed and I took it upon myself to realize Wölfli’s idea according to his vision but of course within my own preconditions. The double and suggestive title is typical of Wölfli´s polarized conception of the world which shifts between idyll and catastrophe. This polarization is of almost Chinese nature in that no idyll exists without catastrophic disturbances just as there is a black “spot” in the white “fish” and vice versa in the famous Yin/Yang symbol. One might explain this idea with a quote by the Norwegian author Knut Hamsun: “A prisoner on his tumbrel is wheeled to the scaffold. A nail chafes at his behind; he moves over and feels more

Three Interludes For Orchestra by Benet Casablancas was commissioned by Fundaci...(+)
Three Interludes For Orchestra by Benet Casablancas was commissioned by Fundación Autor and the Spanish Association of Symphonic Orchestras (AEOS) for its World Premiere in the 2012-2013 season. The score consists of three movements – Pastorale (Tranquillo) Scherzo (Con moto) and Memento e Corale (Lentissimo Ampio e tenuto) – and has an approximate duration of 14 minutes. The spaciousness and transparency of its textures the clearness of its harmony and a general calm and quiet tone of the first and final parts set a contrast with the vigour and rhythmical vividness of its central scherzo.During the course of the piece the shape of chamber writing coexists with the greatness of orchestral peaks. The last section embraces a lower and expressive tone which ends with a great chorale that will lead to a more contemplative coda which fades into silence. Sadness for the devastating tsunami that struck Japan on those same days was present in the mind of the author at the time of writing this movement.“It shows the accused dramatic quality (especially in the third piece) which dominate the orchestral writing of the composer from Sabadell enriched by a pitch atmosphere of neo-impressionistic quality and a healthy rhythmical energy. The concert version contributed with intensity and performance depth which we hope to deepen in future performances and which motivated the greeting of Casablancas.” - Germán Gan Audio Clásica

Full Score-John Luther Adams' Become Ocean for Orchestra (Full score) 'Become O...(+)
Full Score-John Luther Adams' Become Ocean for Orchestra (Full score) 'Become OceanOver the years my orchestral music has become simpler and more expansive. Clouds of Forgetting Clouds of Unknowing (1991-95) contains four different musical textures. In the WhiteSilence (1998) has three. For Lou Harrison (2002) reduces this to just two. In Dark Waves (2007) I finally got to one. When Ifirst heard that piece I began to wonder if I could sustain asimilar sound for a longer span of time. The result is Become Ocean a meditation on the vast deep and mysterious tides of existence.Thetitle is borrowed from a mesostic verse that John Cage wrote in honor of Lou Harrison's birthday. Likening Harrison's music to a river in delta Cage writes: LiStening to it we becOme oceaN. Lifeon this earth first emerged from the sea. And as the polar ice melts and sea level rises we humans find ourselves facing the prospect that once again we may quite literally become ocean.' – John Luther Adams

En Français Orchestre [Partition] Chant du Monde
Solo for Oboe or Violin-'The title only appears frivolous to those who have live...(+)
Solo for Oboe or Violin-'The title only appears frivolous to those who have lived little. With the passage of time the seasons that pass the differences in quantity and quality of light of temperature and weather become of ever greater importance in the meaning of our individual existence. This transformation follows the path of our lives and often mimes in front of our very own eyes incredulous and wondrous events that we can only experience once in a lifetime: our birth our blossoming our aging and our death. Such a subject could well take up ten years of my life. This was the case. Nevertheless everything started very innocently with a proposition from my friend François Leleux to write him a double concerto that he could play with Natalia Gutman initially named ‘Musica Concertante’. It was with this second proposition from François for another double concerto this time with Lisa Batiashvili that the idea came to me for a cycle of four concertos with each time a different instrument from the string quartet to join the oboe. The automnal colours of the cello are a perfect match for the retrospective nature of the first completed concerto in the cycle. ‘concerto nostalgico l’automne’ whilst the love and the first child of the Leleux-Batiashvili couple could only bring Spring to mind hence the ‘Concerto amoroso le printemps’ was born. When Jean-Marc Bador asked me to be an associate of the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris for two years it was quite naturally that I thought of completing this cycle for François Leleux with winter ‘Concerto tenebroso’ created in January 2010 with Lise berthaud playing the viola. All that remained was for me to conclude with a work that reunited all four protagonsits. It was summer the ‘Concerto luminoso’ which took on this role’.
