While organ music of the 19th century was not highly regarded in Germany a few years ago [with the exception of a few outstanding works], our understanding of it has grown during recent years. In other countries 19th century organ music has retained its place in the repertoire to a far greater extent. This three-volume collection presents playable organ works of high quality for both liturgical and concert use. Most of the pieces have not yet been available in new editions [at the time of publication], and are made accessible to a wider public for the first time. The first two volumes contain pieces which were composed in, or introduced to, the German-speaking area of Europe between1800 and 1900; some of them point back stylistically to the 18th century. The focus of the third volume is on works by French, British, and American composers. There are also organ pieces from Bohemia, Belgium, Denmark, and even Brazil./ Répertoire / Orgue

Louis Vierne (1870-1937) studied privately with Cesar Franck and was appointed titulaire organist at Notre-Dame (Paris) in 1900. Numerous concert tours throughout Europe and the USA made him well-known outside France.Vierne?s Organ works are masterpieces of Organ music and are firm favourites in the virtuoso Organ repertoire. In particular Vierne raised the form of the Organ symphony to a stylistic peak. The famous collection of ?Pieces de Fantaisie? comprising 24 fantasy pieces in four volumes (Livres I-IV) has become internationally known. With their varying degrees of difficulty the pieces are suitable for bothprofessional organists as well as advanced pupils and students. The collection comprises mainly individual movements which are suitable for use on many different types of occasion. The ?Pieces en style libre pour orgue ou harmonium? comprising 24 pieces in two volumes are shorter and technically easier. These are ?miniatures? of a rather meditative character equally suitable for Organ teaching or concert use.- Evaluation of all available autograph manuscripts first printed editions and previously unpublished letters.- Editorial clarification superseding the long-standing international correction lists.- Critical Commentary (Fr/Eng/Ger) and foreword (Fr/Eng/Ger) with detailed performance practice tips.- Numerous illustrations and facsimile pages.

Volume 4: Christian Life and Conduct-The Orgelbüchlein Project is a collective composition project aiming to complete Bach’s unfinished manuscript known as ‘Orgelbüchlein’. In the ‘Little Organ Book’ Bach laid out a complete hymnal of short organ chorale 164 in all but only completed 46 of them. Why the remaining 118 were left as blank pages with only a title at the head remains a mystery but they inspired organist William Whitehead to found the Orgelbüchlein Project in which contemporary composers are invited to contribute a piece to completing the collection. The resulting collection to be published in eight volumes represents across-section of the most interesting composers at work today across Europe. More information about the project is available at www.orgelbuechlein.com.

Judith Weir's The Wild Reeds for Organ.'The Wild Reeds is a ten-minute partita made up of an original theme followed by six variations which are played continuously. The theme was partlyinspired by folk music for outdoor wind instruments from eastern Europe rugged yet delicate at the same time. Another important inspiration has been the Organ sonorities which result from unusual divisions of the octave producing strange chords and ghostly harmonisations of melodies. Above all The Wild Reeds has been written for Thomas Trotter (who personally commissioned this music and gave much valuable advice during its composition) in honourof his remarkable thirty years as Birmingham City Organist.' - Judith Weir

Jonathan Harvey (1939-2012) was a British composer who studied at St Johns Cambridge and Princeton and who later taught at various universities and conservatoires across Europe and North America. His psychedelic work Laus Deo has become a brilliant showcase for 20th century Organ music. Commissioned by Simon Preston in 1969 it was supposedly inspired by a dream in which an angel played the main themes to him on an Organ: Harvey said he finished the piece within 12 hours of waking from the dream. It has since become known for its ear-piercing dissonances and exciting cluster chords.
