Librett
o by James Fenton
In a
make-believe world, based
loosely on Bombay and
Kashmir, the story of
Haroun is a tale of a
fight between the free
imagination and the
powers that oppose it.
Haroun's father, Rashid,
the Shah of Blah, is a
professional and gifted
story-teller, a popular
figure much in demand at
public events. Feeling
neglected, his wife is
persuaded to leave him
and run away with a
neighbor. After this,
Rashid loses confidence
in his powers of
story-tellling, haunted
by his son's question:
'What's the use of
stories that aren't even
there?' Rashid is due to
speak at a political
rally to be held by the
sinister politician,
Snooty Buttoo. He is told
that if he does not come
up with his usual fund of
tales, his tongue will be
cut out. As Rashid
despairs, Haroun
determines to rescue his
father's talent - a
project in which he
learns that the Ocean of
the Sea of Stories, the
source of all stories, is
being polluted by the
enemy of all stories, the
evil Khattam Shud. In a
series of brilliant
imagined adventures,
Haroun succeeds in
defeating the powers of
darkness, and restoring
happiness to his family,
and to the city where he
lives.
Salman
Ruishdie's children's
book, written in the
aftermath of the fatwa,
has an effervescent style
which is full of rhymes
and wordplay. The
libretto stays very close
to the spirit of the
original, conjuring up a
fantasy world in which,
nonetheless, one never
loses sight of harsh
political reality and the
great issues of freedom
of speech and
imagination. -- James
Fenton, 1998

Alex
Freeman’s Under
the arching heavens: A
Requiem (2018) was
commissioned by Nils
Schweckendiek and the
Helsinki Chamber Choir to
commemorate the 100th
anniversary of the 1918
Finnish civil war.
Structured around the
Latin liturgy of the mass
for the dead, the work
has a duration of more
than an hour and also
incorporates poems in
Finnish, Swedish and
English, reflecting both
the specific reason for
the commission and the
universality of human
suffering caused by war.
In the non-liturgical
texts chosen by Freeman,
birds are a recurring
image, as is that of a
mother and child. The
work ends with lines by
Walt Whitman from a poem
written in the aftermath
of the American Civil
War; lines described by
the composer as
‘some of the most
comforting poetry in the
English language.’
Also included on the disc
is A Wilderness of Sea,
another recent choral
piece which draws on
works by Shakespeare, and
the poet’s images
of the sea, and of
mankind’s
relationship with it.

Writt

80th Anniversary of the
surprise attack on the
American Pacific Fleet,
Remembering Pearl Harbor
is a stirring tribute
honoring the heroes of
the date which will live
in infamy- December 7,
1941. Like flying over
the Pacific, the opening
bars seemingly soar back
in time. The composition
takes the listener on a
moving journey from the
precarious moments before
the fateful attack,
through the air strike
and resulting aftermath.
The musical voyage begins
with chimes, signifying
the hour of the attack
that Sunday morning,
developing into the
heroic main theme
representing the Spirit
of America. A rousing
version of Anchors Aweigh
takes us to the naval
base at Pearl Harbor and
the activities of the
day. By the end of
Anchors Aweigh, the mood
seems to change,
foreshadowing the fate of
the U.S. fleet. Next, the
haunting theme of the
Japanese National Anthem
is heard and the distant
sound of propellers as
they approach. When the
planes arrive, the battle
rages until there is
total destruction.
Countless people lost
their lives on this
tragic day. The playing
of Taps and the Navy
Hymn, Eternal Father,
Strong to Save is
presented as an homage to
those who perished.
Following this solemn
moment, the American
spirit begins to rise as
they come together to
defeat the enemy. As the
U.S. triumphs in the end,
we hear fragments of many
American tunes depicting
the strength and
resilience of the
American People. You may
want to consider using
portions of Franklin
Delano Roosevelt's famous
speech to enhance your
performance. The
following sections are
suggested: Measure 46:
Yesterday, December 7th,
1941 - a date which will

United States of America
was suddenly and
deliberately attacked by
the naval and air forces
of the Empire of Japan.
Measure 83: The attack

Islands has caused severe
damage to American naval
and military forces. I
regret to tell you that
very many American lives
have been lost. Measure
105: No matter how long

the composer gives us the

It is a whole new folk

This is how Karl Flodin
described his first aural
impression of the tone

In the aftermath of the

Russian Emperor Nicholas

their support for the
press and the freedom of
speech in diverse
cultural events arranged
in Finland in the
beginning of November
1899. A group of artists
joined forces in
arranging a performance
of six historical

composed Music for the

for this occasion. After
several revisions, the
music composed for the
last tableau, Suomi heraa

known as the tone poem
