A student of Gabriel Fauré and Louis Verne at the Paris Conservatoire Nadia Boulanger (1887-1979) owes her aura to an exceptional teaching career spanning nearly 75 years during which she trained the most illustrious musicians from Copland to Glass not to forget Bernstein or Gardiner. In the past few years her creative work long considered negligible has finally been escaping from oblivion thanks to the untiring work of the Centre Nadia et Lili Boulanger directed by Alexandra Laederich. It is at her instigation that the publication of Nadia Boulanger's songs has continued in chronological order: after a first collection (HA 9725)devoted to the youthful works brought out during her lifetime by the publisher Hamelle the second volume presented here exclusively features unpublished works. First of all it contains three Romantic mélodies in German on poems by Heine – a surprising choice given that the composer felt more attracted by Symbolist poetry. This is attested to by the other songs in the collection on verses by Paul Verlaine Maurice Maeterlinck and Georges Delaquys three poets who were part of the literary pantheon of Nadia and her sister Lili. One will discover treasures of refinement and sensitivity in their musical settings.

Philip Stone is an actor of long and wide experience. In cinema he has worked with distinguished directors such as Stanley Kubrick Lindsay Anderson and Stephen Spielburg.he has also been a familiar face on our televisions for the past thirty years as well. Down those years he's always had a quiet ability to compose songs-words and music. They were written en passant in various places: in a tubercular chalet on the shores of Morecambe Bay - in a back room in Brixton - in a bedroom in Leeds - in a friend's house in St John's Wood. Some of these songs feature in his one-man show Beginnings and Endings and these eight are a varied example of that ability.

Par BRITTEN BENJAMIN. 2013 marks the centenary of Benjamin Britten's birth and major celebrations are planned across the world, making this the widest ever global celebration of a British composer. The previously unpublished Six Early Songs were written during the composer's schooldays, whilst he was studying with Frank Bridge. But even at this tender age, Britten already had such accomplished works as Quatre Chansons Francaises under his belt. The songs on the one hand display Britten's school-boyish imagination (witches, owls and moths), while on the other show a more brooding side, not to mention confident piano writing and an innate understanding of vocal drama. Previously unpublished, these six songs are an important new addition to the solo song repertory./ Répertoire / Voix Moyennes et Piano

He was a sensitive composer for Voice and among the very best of his songs are these settings of verses by Walter de la Mare a personal friend. Howells had frequently discussed the publication of A Garden for de la Mare with Christopher Palmer (author of the major study ofthe composer’s life) but Palmer died prior to publication and Michael Pilkington saw the project through to completion.

His early songs, now published for the first time, reveal the young composer's extraordinary talent. Based on the musical language of the late Romantic period, he created a unique world of sounds for Eichendorff's poems: full of melodic expanse, refined harmony and sparkling inventive genius. For the first time, this edition shows the early work of a composer who later became one of Hollywood's most successful composers of film scores./ Répertoire / Voix Moyenne et Piano

Frank Bridge’s Three Songs for Medium Voice Viola and Piano is the second volume in a 30-volume series by The Frank Bridge Trust in association with Thames Publishing celebrating the works of Frank Bridge. This publication features the songs Far far from each other Where is it that our soul doth go? and Music when soft voices die and includes the score for Viola separately making the collaboration of the three musicians easier. The songs can be and often are performed together as a cycle but also work as short individual pieces. The first performance of the three songs in December 1908 marked a rareoccurrence as Frank Bridge played the Piano part himself. Far far from each other is the most ambitious of the three pieces for all three musicians. The words are excerpts from Matthew Arnold’s ‘Empedocles on Etna and Other Poems Parting’.Where is it that our soul doth go? is the shortest of the three songs and the words are a translation of the last stanza of Heinrich Heine’s Clarisse translated by K. F. Kroeker. While the first two songs are original settings Bridge first wrote Music when soft voices die for High Voice Piano and Cello in 1903. The present version was transcribed in 1907. Music when soft voices die the short poem providing the words for this piece is one of the most influential and well-known of Shelley’s works.Watch Three Songs performed by Rebecca Ringle (Mezzo-Soprano) Luke Fleming (Viola) and Roger Steptoe (Piano):
