Singapore Rhapsody is an exciting work in two movements based on popular Malaysian folksongs. The songs that occur in the first movement are Rasa Sayang eh (a love song), Gelang Sipaku Gelang (a song about community spirit), Suriram (a song about a girl proclaiming her virtues) and Di-Tanjung Katong (a love song that takes place at the Cape Katong on the southeast coast of Singapore). The second movement features Lenggang Kangkung, which literally means “The swaying of the watercress,” Katang Lompat (a moralistic song about the symbolism of the frog) and finally Kenek kenek-lah Udang (a wedding song). Each movement of this enchanting work can be performed separately but acomplete performance will be the crowning moment of any concert.

Dit tweedelige werk is gebaseerd op populaire Maleisische volksliedjes. De liedjes uit het eerste deel zijn Rasa Sayang eh (een liefdesliedje), Gelang Sipaku Gelang (een liedje over gemeenschapszin), Suriram (overeen meisje dat haar eeuwige vriendschap aanbiedt) en Di-Tanjung Katong (een liefdeslied dat zich afspeelt aan de zuidoostkust van Singapore). Singapour, la cité du Lion, est l’un des plus importants carrefours d’Asie. Singapour mélange habilement les cultures chinoises, malaises, indiennes et occidentales. La musique traditionnelle est l’image de la multiethnicité de cette ville-état. Les deux mouvements de cette composition s’inspirent de chants traditionnels malais. Le premier mouvement développe quatre chants traditionnels de caractère contrastant et contrasté. Le second mouvement est basé sur les chants Lenggang Kangkung (qui dépeint le gracieux mouvement du cresson de rizière), Katang Lompat (une chanson moraliste qui évoque le symbolisme de la grenouille) et un chant de mariage. Les deux mouvements de cetterhapsodie ne sont pas intimement liés. Il est donc possible de les interpréter séparément.

Singapore, la citt del leone, è uno dei più importanti crocevia dell’Asia. Singapore mischia abilmente le culture provenienti dalla Cina, dalla Malesia, dall’India a quelle occidentali. La musica tradizionale è l’immagine delle molte etnie di questa citt -stato. I due movimenti di questa composizione si ispirano a canti tradizionali della Malesia. Il primo movimento sviluppa quattro canti tradizionali di carattere contrastante e contrastato. Il secondo movimento è basato sui canti Lenggang Kangkung e Katang Lompat, che, come d’abitudine in oriente, descrivono animali e l’ambiente in cui vivono legandoli a simbolismi, e un canto tradizionale in occasione di matrimoni. Jacob de Haan was commissioned to compose this concert piece by the St. Peters Wind Symphony from Brisbane, Australia. Ross Roy is the monumental late 19th century villa where St. Peters Lutheran College was founded in 1945. The villa has always remained the school symbol. In this composition, Jacob de Haan sees the Ross Roy as a metaphor for the years spent at school (a monument in time), where one's personality is formed. So, the opening theme the artist calls the Ross Roy theme initially has monumental characteristics.The rhythmic motion, which strides along in the lower register and percussion at the beginning of the next section is typical of Tempo di Marcia. Thismovement, accompanied by repetitions of sound, is a metaphor for the structure and discipline in school. This is the introduction to a march theme, symbolic of passing through the classes up to the final examinations.Then, the Ross Roy theme is dealt with again, now in a playful, humorous variation. As if the composer is saying there should also be time for a smile in school. The same theme can be heard in major key and a slower tempo in the following section, expressing pride and self-confidence. This is also the introduction to the expressive middle section that represents love, friendship and understanding.We then return to the march theme in a slightly altered construction. The oriental sounds, constituting the modulation to the final theme, are symbols of the diversity of cultures in the school. The characteristic final theme first sounds solemn, but turns into a festive apotheosis. It is no coincidence that the final cadence is reminiscent of the close to a traditional overture, for the school years can be considered the overture to the rest of one's life. The premiere of Ross Roy was conducted by Jacob de Haan in Brisbane, on August 22, 1997.

In opdracht van het collegeorkest componeerde Jacob de Haan dit gevarieerde concertwerk vol metaforen. De structuur en discipline van de school horen we in de met toonherhaling gepaard gaande ritmische beweging in basregister en slagwerk. Het volgende, martiale thema staat symbool voor het doorlopen van de klassen. Een schertsende, humoristische versie van het hoofdthema ontbreekt niet: op school moet immers ook tijd zijn voor vrolijkheid. Het karakteristieke slotthema mondt uit in een feestelijke apotheose.

Das charakteristische Schlussthemamündet in einem festlichen Höhepunkt.

Ainsi, le thème initial se développe-t-il sur un motif rythmique imposant qui alterne entre les instruments graves et la batterie. Ce motif symbolise l’autorité et le cadre structuré de l’école. On retrouve ce thème plusieurs reprises et notamment sousune forme humoristique et espiègle : nous découvrons les bons côtés de l’école, la joie des élèves, les sentiments de fierté, d’amour et d’amitié. Autre élément thématique, une marche qui symbolise la progression des élèves dans leur cursus pour arriver leurs examens de fin d'étude. » En guise de conclusion, Jacob de Haan nous offre un thème grandiose qui s’élargit en apothéose.

Whereas ‘Auld Lang Syne’ may be considered the best-known Scottish song ever, yet at the same time it is an obscure one, for there are but few people who know the complete text by heart.
After the familiar ‘Should auld acquaintance be forgot .....‘ many people take their refuge to lyrics like ‘rum tee dum ta dee ..... lah, lah, lah ........... for auld lang syne’.
Even in Scotland only a handful of persons know the entire text and are able to give a correct rendering of it.
The current lyrics have been attributed to the Scottish poet Robert Burns. Burns, however, he did not write the whole poem : after he had heard an old man sing the centuries-old Scotchballad, he wrote it down and added a number of stanzas (1788).
Historical research teaches us that the ballad served many purposes, both political and religious.
Nowadays, ‘Auld Lang Syne’ is sung as a Christmas Carol and it is also sung on New Year’s Eve at the turning of the year. Apart from that, though, the song is also sung on many other occasions sometimes with different lyrics, which usually have Love, Friendship and/or Parting as their themes, as these go well with the fascinating melody.

In this arrangement a low-sounding solo instrument is central. The harmonization in the accompaniment fits in perfectly with the sentiments this song will evoke.

Scottish Dances is based on three Scottish traditionals: Cock of the North, The Bonnie Bank's O'Loch Lomond and Marie's Wedding.

I. Cock of the North's name is used for multiple things or events. For example for a locomotive to a famous, it seems, delicious liqueur, and rallies to snowboard competitions. Furthermore is Cock O' the North a nickname of a famous Duke. (The 4th Duke of Gordon).
In this composition Cock of the North (a Jig) is a traditional Scottish bagpipe tune, regularly played on tattoos by Pipe Bands. Not infrequently the drummers sing the text.

II. The Bonnie Bank's O'Loch Lomond is about a sad story that took place during an revolt against the British. In 1745 Bonnie Prince Charlie had to retreat. Two of his men were captured. One was convicted and executed, while the other was released. The spirit of the executed soldier would arrive in Scotland via the 'low road' (underworld) before his companion, who had still a long way to go.

III. In a Scottish wedding, after the official ceremonies, there is often danced. This is called a ceilidh. For this we use traditional Scottish music such as Marie's Wedding '.
Mid dance we go back to the church, where a lovely song in honor of the couple sounds.
Marie's Wedding has been recorded by Van Morrison (among many others).

Scottish Dances is gebaseerd op drie Schotse traditionals: Cock of the North, The Bonnie Bank's O'Loch Lomond en Marie's Wedding.

It's nice for the concert band to get the opportunity to play something jazzy once in a while, and you know the audience will love it as much as the band does.Plenty of opportunity to study jazz-style phrasing in the concert band, interesting Percussion parts, a catchy tune and good linear motion for all move GETTIN' GOSPEL to the top of the list. The only danger here is that the band might like it a little TOO much, and want to play it every day.

On the 6th of April 1999, exactly 25 years after ABBA had won the Eurovision Song Contest with the song Waterloo, the musical Mamma Mia! opened in London. The funny and appealing love story, based on 22 ABBA classics, became an immediate success. Arranger Peter Kleine Schaars has selected five of the most famous titles from the musical, added the hit Waterloo and used his musical imagination. The result is a catchy ABBA medley that will appeal to young and old.

Op 6 april 1999, precies 25 jaar nadat Abba het Eurovisie Songfestival won met Waterloo, werden in Londen de deuren geopend voor de musical Mamma Mia! Al snel werd het onderhoudende liefdesverhaal - gebaseerd op 22 klassiekersvan Abba - een groot succes. Peter Kleine Schaars selecteerde vijf titels uit de musical, voegde de wereldhit Waterloo toe en liet zijn muzikale fantasie de vrije loop. 2 5 Jahre nachdem ABBA den Grand Prix d'Eurovision mit dem Lied Waterloo gewonnen hatte, fand die Uraufführung des Musicals Mamma Mia! in London statt. Die mitreißende Liebesgeschichte, basierend auf 22 ABBA-Klassikern, wurde schnell zu einem großen Erfolg. Peter Kleine Schaars wählte die sechs berühmtesten Titel aus dem Musical, ergänzte sie um den Welthit Waterloo, und ließ seiner musikalischen Phantasie freien Lauf. Das Ergebnis ist ein raffiniertes ABBA-Medley, das Jung und Alt anspricht.

Depuis quelques temps, un nouveau phénomène s’accentue dans le paysage artistique anglo-saxon : la comédie musicale pop. Le succès le plus récent s’appelle Mamma Mia!, une mise en histoire des plus grands tubes d’ABBA. La nostalgie est une puissante publicité synonyme de bonheur.

In this work the composer portrays what he sees as the typical characteristics of youth, his young daughter being a source of inspiration. The music describes different emotions between parents and their child such as parental love, proudness andalso some tension.

The final movement starts with a fugue based on the first theme leading to the work’s climax where the chorale appears in majestic form.

In The Essence of Youth geeft de componist zijn visie op de kindertijd en de jeugd. Zijn eigen dochter vormde hierbij een belangrijke inspiratiebron. De opening staat met opgewekte ritmes, dynamische contrasten en maatsoortwisselingenvoor de spontaniteit van kinderen. Het eerste en tweede deel vertellen over de liefde, zorg en toewijding die horen bij een ouder-kindrelatie. Met dissonante harmonieën, maar ook met mooie melodieën weet de componist ditprachtig te verbeelden. Een fuga leidt ten slotte naar een prachtig koraal: de trotse ouders met hun kind verbeeldend.

In The Essence of Youth beschreibt der Komponist sein Bild von Kindheit und Jugend - inspiriert von seiner eigenen Tochter. Die Eröffnung steht mit aufgeweckten Rhythmen, dynamischen Kontrasten, Taktartwechseln für die Unberechenbarkeit vonKindern. Der erste und zweite Satz erzählen mit dissonanten Harmonien, aber auch mit schönen Melodien von Spannungen, Liebe und Sorge in der Eltern-Kind-Beziehung. Den Schluss bildet eine Fuge, die zu einem prachtvollen Choral führt: ein Bild stolzerEltern mit ihrem Kind!

< I>The Essence of Youth è un brano che riflette ciò che il compositore, ispirato da sua figlia, considera come le caratteristiche tipiche della gioventù. Un’ouverture spettacolare nella quale contrasti dinamici e dai ritmi vivaci si susseguonocome a simboleggiare la straordinaria energia dei bambini. Il primo movimento, sulla scia dell’introduzione, anticipa una parte di solo che accompagna al secondo movimento, testimonianza dell’amore infinito dei genitori nei confronti dei figli. Unafuga basata sul tema iniziale contraddistingue il terzo movimento che conduce all’apoteosi finale.

In 2005 it was 400 years ago that the first volume of the world-famous novel ‘El ingenioso hidalgo don Quichote de La Mancha’, written by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (1547-1616), was published.

Don Quichote, a nobleman who is under the delusion that he must fight against injustice starts out on a journey with his steed Rosinante and his peasant squire Sancho Panza and experiences all kinds of remarkable adventures.
In the course of them his love for the lady Dulcinea of Tobosco plays an important role.
One of the most famous scenes is that of his fight against windmills on the plain of La Mancha, which he takes to be enormous, evil giants.

‘DonQuichote’ consists of four short pieces:
1. Don Quichote: the ingenious Spanish nobleman.
2. Dulcinea: the lady with whom this errant knight has an imaginary courtly love affair.
3. Sancho Panza: Don Quichote’s loyal and sensible servant who, compared to his master, is a simple soul.
4. Rosinante: the steed that has much to put up with considering it has a rider who often spends more time on the ground than in the saddle.

In 2005 was het 400 jaar geleden dat de schrijver Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (1547-1616) het eerste deel van zijn inmiddels wereldberoemde werk ‘El ingenioso hidalgo don Quichote de La Mancha’ publiceerde.

Don Quichote,een edelman die in de waan verkeert het onrecht in de wereld te moeten bestrijden, trekt met zijn strijdros Rosinante en zijn schildknaap Sancho Panza de wereld in en beleeft allerlei opmerkelijke avonturen. Daarbij speelt zijnliefde voor de jonkvrouw Dulcinea van Toboso een bijzondere rol.
Een van de bekendste taferelen is zijn gevecht tegen de windmolens in de vlakte van La Mancha, die hij voor vervaarlijke, kwaadaardige reuzen aanziet.

‘Don Quichote’ bestaat uit vier korte deeltjes:
1. Don Quichote: de vernuftige Spaanse edelman
2. Dulcinea: de jonkvrouwe waarmee hij in zijn eigen verbeelding een romance mee heeft.
3. Sancho Panza: detrouwe en verstandige knecht van Don Quichote, die vergeleken met zijn meester een simpele ziel is.
4. Rosinante: zijn viervoeter, die heel wat te doorstaan heeft met een berijder, die soms meer op de grond ligt dandat hij in het zadel zit.

‘Music’ by John Miles was one of Blackstone’s favourite numbers.
With completely different notes, but holding on to the same form and atmosphere the latter has tried to write an attractive composition for both young and old.
Gate 11 refers to the ever agitated and noisy scenes at an airport, especially during check-in. Yet there are also passengers who wait patiently, letting their thoughts range at will, looking forward to meeting a loved one at the end of their journey.

‘Music� �� van John Miles was een favoriet nummer van Blackstone.
Met totaal andere noten maar in dezelfde vorm en sfeer heeft hij getracht een aantrekkelijke compositie te schrijven voor jong en oud.
Gate 11 refereert aan dealtijd weer gejaagde en luidruchtige taferelen op een luchthaven en dan vooral bij het inchecken. Toch zijn er ook andere passagiers die geduldig wachten en in stilte wegdromen en uitkijken naar de ontmoeting met een geliefde aanhet einde van de reis.
