This collection of nine 'classic' Rock tunes spans five decades of rock history. The arrangements in Rock Philharmonic contain complete versions and lead sheets of original hit songs by top groups and artists: Jerry Lee Lewis, Bobby Day, Sonny and Cher, The Rolling Stones, The Eagles, Journey, and Green Day. Each piece includes a flexible arrangement that allows the melody, harmony, and bass parts to be played by all sections in the string orchestra, like or mixed instrument groups, quartets, or trios---allowing players to learn the component parts of rock and roll, play the classic arrangement, create their own arrangements, or perform the tunes solo. Allerheiligentag V. Par LINJAMA JYRKI. The material for Jyrki Linjama's Allerheiligentag cycle is a Finnish folk chorale for All Saints' Day (no. 146 in the Finnish Hymn Book). The first work in the cycle is a string trio (2007), the second a piece for orchestra (2009), and the fourth and fifth are solo works for viola da gamba (2018) and Sonata for violin solo (2019). The composer tells: 'The choice of topic and material was originally influenced by the place where the string trio would be premiered ? the old church on the island of Seili (Själö) in the Turku archipelago. The bleak history of the mental hospital on the island invited images of suffering and death. I got so attached to the fine, bleak melody that this series of works began to emerge.' Lasting 17 minutes, the sonata for solo violin has three movements, all of them embracing the folk choral material and Béla Bartók?s influence in different ways. to the violin concerto by Gyorgy Ligeti. Par ADES THOMAS. In a conversation with the violinist Peter Herresthal, we touched on the “invitation” in the score of Ligeti’s Violin concerto to provide a cadenza for the work. Peter suggested that I answer this invitation and I was happy to accept. I followed all the composer’s directions exactly: the cadenza may use material from all five movements, and should be of “hectic” character throughout. I also aimed to write a cadenza of which the closing orchestral coda would be an inevitable result. (Thomas Adès) The cadenza can also be composed by the soloist and can last up to 1-2 minutes. It should be hectic throughout (continuation of the appassionata agitato molto), but can incorporate melodic material ad lib. from all five movements. Towards the end, the tempo should be prestissimo with alternating arco and left hand pizz. in mad virtuosity. The cadenza has no real end and is suddenly interrupted by the orchestra at R (as agreed between soloist and conductor). This interruption occurs suddenly 'as if unprepared'. The soloist should at this point be playing in high positions (on the top string) at maximum velocity. The solo violin abruptly falls silent on the entry of the high woodblock.
