English-German.
Though he grew up in
Vienna and Paris and
spoke German as his
native language, Ferenc
Liszt's Hungarian
patriotism was aroused by
a natural disaster. ''Oh
my wild and distant
country! Your cry of pain
has brought me back to
you. I bow my head,
ashamed that I have
forgotten you for so
long,'' he reacted to the
news of the 1838 Danube
floods that demolished
much of Pest, and he
announced a charity
concert for the benefit
of the victims. When he
visited Hungary the
following year, he was
embraced by his
compatriots with an
unexpected enthusiasm
that defied all
description. This highly
emotional encounter set
his entire career onto a
new track Hungarian
motifs began to appear
inhis music. This marked
the beginning of the
genesis of his 19
Hungarian Rhapsodies that
spanned many decades. The
opening theme of
Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2,
a piece that has acquired
extraordinary popularity,
was written down by Liszt
in his sketchbook in 1847
in Ia i, Romania. The
piece was published in
1851, later with separate
cadenzas and ad-libitum
variants added for two of
Liszt s pupils. This
revised (2020) edition,
based on the New Liszt
Edition, is distinguished
by the inclusion of
these, as well as a
preface summarizing the
latest findings of
research, facsimile
reproductions, and
critical notes.

Mozart's
Concerto K. 453 enjoyed
great popularity during
the composer's lifetime
and was widely known
through copies and a
print. The state of the
sources is thus
multi-faceted yet
unequivocal: the primary
source is the
rediscovered autograph,
which was considered lost
after 1945 and was not at
the disposal of the Neue
Mozart-Ausgabe. The
editorial quality of the
new edition is guaranteed
not only by Schiffs
sensitive fingerings and
stylistically
well-grounded cadenzas,
but also by the Mozart
scholar Stephan Horner to
whom Henle has entrusted
its urtext editions.
Breitkopf/Henle
cooperation means: Each
work is edited according
to predetermined
standardized editorial
guidelines. First and
foremost among the
sources consulted were
Mozarts handwritten
scores, being the most
important sources. In
some cases they had not
been available when the
previous editions were
being prepared. Moreover,
we know today that in
addition to Mozarts own
manuscripts, early copies
in parts and prints also
contain important
information regarding the
musical text.

Chopi
n's Waltzes aroused
controversy. They gained
their peak in popularity
through being treated by
many as masterpieces, and
held by others to be
dangerous for salons.
They are included (next
to the nocturnes and the
impromptus) in his
feminine vein of
creativity. Volume XI
contains 8 of Chpoins
Waltzes. There are
variations to be found in
the written text. The
variations marked ossia
were marked in this way
by Chopin himself or
written in his hand into
his students copies;
variations without this
definition are derived
from the context of the
text in original versions
or from inability to gain
a singular interpretation
of the text. The original
titles of the Waltzes
given in the music are
given according to
autographs. In first
editions, where
describing words, such as
grande, brillante,
nouvelle are probably
freely added by
publishers, in the
opinions of the editors
of WN.

These reached
the heights of
popularity, and are
considered by many
considered to be
masterpieces, although in
the view of the skeptics
gravitated dangerously
toward salonism. They
were included, along with
the nocturnes

Chopin's feminineworks.
In the descriptions of
their nature appear:
volatility, airiness,
overwheleming movement,
aristocracy, eroticism.
