This solo Organ work written in 2009 and dedicated to the memory of the great 20th Century English church composer Herbert Howells has been received with high critical acclaim by both Organ specialists and general music lovers.Although he captures a glimpse of Howells' middle period style and intense harmonic language Venables manages not to stoop to pastiche treading his own distinct path and producing a noble and poetic piece which would not be out of place as the centerpiece of any concert programme. It was used for this purpose to great effect in Ian Tracey's recital marking the 76th anniversary of the great Liverpool Cathedral Organ which alsoshowed its special suitability for performance on powerful cathedral-type instruments. Also performed successfully by Adrian Lucas.Approx. 9 minutes in length.

These 30 pieces were written by Herbert Howells as exercises and piano sight-reading tests. They are however much more than visual traps for the unwary. They are at times graceful surprising and touching and they are allinventive miniatures which represent a collection characteristic of the composer.Like the occasional pieces written for examination purposes by Ravel and Debussy these studies have a unique value. Adaptedslightly by Alan Ridout to make useful manuals-only pieces for organ this compilation is a must have for developing organ players or those experienced players who are looking for something a little different.

Triptykon / Triptych for Organ solo by Niels Rosing-Schow. Triptych is written for the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in 2017 commissioned by The Danish Society of Organists and Cantors. From the preface: The three movements of the work are musical images or situations with the middle one Toccata as its axis. The latter is intended as an image of the dispute between Luther and the ecclesiastical authorities which is the origin of the Reformation. Two of Luther's Reformation Hymns are more or less palpably present in the music.Theother two movements can be regarded as 'before' and 'after'. The first Exordíum is a 'fluid' situation but also a preparation which gradually accumulates a suspense pointing towards the discharge of energy of the Toccata. The third movement Hymn represents a serene situation where a wealth of hymnal fragments grows out of an underlying structure repeated several times (technically speaking a passacaglia). There are also elements however which are derived from the previous movements. Niels Rosing-Schow (2016)

The Prelude de Profundis is excerpted from two sets of Preludes Howells composed for Organ of which this is the first of the second set. Entirely different in mood from the nervous energy of the Rhapsody Prelude de Profundis expresses the call ‘from the depths’.Herbert Howells is a giant of 20th century Anglican church music the remainder of whose oeuvre is in the process of gaining new appreciation. He left a body of distinguished Organ music of which these two works are fine examples. Howells’s first three rhapsodies for Organ were published together during the years of the first World War. It was not until forty years later that Howells returned to the form until although it shares many structural similarities with the earlier works.

Master Tallis's Testament No.3 from Six Pieces for Organ. Composed in 1940 Master Tallis's Testament unfolds Quasi lento teneramente in a gentle six-eight rhythm and in G minor. It consists of three variants of a theme which falls into three phrases (eight plus six plus four bars). The music rises gradually to a climax at the end of the third variant. A quiet echo of the last two bars supplies a coda and a peaceful ending in the major. The piece is one which its composer regards as most typical and with particular affection. Its title which pays tribute to a father of English cathedral music allies it to the twenty-four pieces contained in Howells' two sets of clavichordpieces the twelve of Lambert's Clavichord (the Lambert not being the composer Constant but the Bath photographer Herbert who in the Twenties published a set of portraits of British composers (including Howells) and the twelve of Howells' Clavichord (1951) the separate titles similarly evoke those of the Elizabethan Virginalists. © 1977 Felix Aprahamian

Marked Molto semplice in 3/8 time Howells's piece has fluently original harmonic interest and concentrates its simple initial idea with attractivelyflowing momentum. This is a perfect piece for a Christening service and would also make an impressive intermezzolike item in a recital of English organ music.' - The Organ

The Partita composed in 1971 is inscribed 'For the Rt Hon. Edward Heath M.P. Prime Minister'. Its five movements enjoy the almost improvisatory freedom that is characteristic for Howells' writing yet they are bound together by a kind of cyclic feeling engendered by a fairly consistent use of an original mode: it descends from C to C as follows: C B B flat G F sharp E E flat C. The Partita exploits both the melodic and harmonic implications of the mode.

Martin Luther. Par SCHNEIDER ENJOTT. On the occasion of the quincentenary of Ref...(+)
Martin Luther. Par SCHNEIDER ENJOTT. On the occasion of the quincentenary of Reformation Day in 2017, the composer Enjott Schneider thoroughly studied Martin Luther the individual and all his contradictions. The result is a brilliant, demanding organ symphony which is perfect for concerts on the subject of Reformation and Martin Luther.
The composer describes the five movements of the symphony as follows:
'1st movement:
Wir glauben all an einen Gott with its quintuplet-like beginning is very Gregorian in style, outlining the range of Lutheran emotionalism between the Middle Ages and the modern era. The irrationality of 'faith' ultimately has priority over any thought and evidence. At the beginning of the movement, sounds of knocking on wood remind of the nailing of the Ninety-Five Theses to the doors of churches in Wittenberg. The chorale melody sometimes hides with an almost rough medieval saltarello, referring to Luther's robustness and vitality with which he knew to carry away even common people.
2nd movement:
In 1530, the electoral prince of Saxony presented to Luther at Coburg Castle the golden signet ring with the 'Luther rose' which became the symbol of his theology of grace. A white heart with black cross is fixed on a five-petalled rose. To him, 'white' is the colour of angels and ghosts, 'black' stands for the pain of crucification: 'The just shall live by faith, but by faith in the Crucified.' But the fact that the rose and the heart are the dominating symbols shows how Catholic Marian piety remained an ingredient of Luther's spirituality throughout his life. In line with the dominant five-petal structure of the rose, this movement was composed, to a large extent, in accordance with the floating, lyrical rhythm in 5/8 time.
3rd movement:
The omnipresence of death and dying – from the plague and war to the never-ending dangers of daily life – was an essential part of the world view of that time. Fears ensued that might heighten into the grotesque, e.g. in the pictures of Hieronymus Bosch. The 'Danse macabre' was a popular motif in those years. Luther's chorale 'Mitten wir im Leben sind / mit dem Tod umfangen' from 1524 ('Enchiridion' from Erfurt) is based on the Gregorian chant 'Media vita in morte sumus' created in France around 750 and, with its idea of transience, inspired a simplistic air.
4th movement:
The famous confession delivered at the Diet of Worms in 1521, 'I stand here and can say no more. God help me. Amen', are not Luther's words but the version later used as text for a pamphlet. However, it represents quite plainly the straightforwardness and inevitability of his mission. Musically, it was made into a 'perpetuum mobile', i.e. a dogged, ostinato and never-ending musical air.
5th movement:
The 'Mighty Fortress', on the other hand, is one of the great symbols of Martin Luther which, with its shining C major key, embodies the Protestant ideology and willful nature of the Reformation unlike any other song. Heinrich Heine called it the 'Marseille anthem of the Reformation', Friedrich Engels the 'Marseillaise of the Peasants' Wars'. This disputability is not thought through to the end but rather interrupted: With a jubilant 'birdcall version' of the melody, the finale shows a rather chamber-music-like side of the 'ideals of freedom of Christians'.'/ Répertoire / Orgue

Orgel Büchlein-Volume 1 of Bach?s organ music presents some of the most frequently played organ pieces altogether. Here they appear in a new engraving based on the New Bach Edition (NBA).This updated edition takes into account the latest findings of Bach scholarship: thus for example a newly-discovered copy of the first edition containing inscriptions in Bach?s own hand could be incorporated into the musical text of the Schübler Chorales. For the Orgel-Büchlein Bach?s autograph manuscript remains the principal source. Yet a glance at its early dissemination among his pupils reveals an abundance of readings that give interested organists insights into how perhaps Bach?smost famous collection was played at that time.Unfortunately no autograph manuscripts survive regarding the early chorale partitas. However the Foreword helps to solve the ?riddle? of how these partitas were handed down.Links to major sources have been provided in collaboration with the Bach Archive Leipzig and its Bach digital database. Aus Der Kunst Der Fuge. Par BACH JOHANN SEBASTIAN. In 1991 an astonishing discovery was published by Zoltán Göncz answering the question with fairly great certainty how Bach planned the appearance of the fourth subject, the main subject of the cycle: One of the striking features of Contrapunctus 14 is that in this movement Bach applied the stretto of whole expositions. In the exposition of the first three subjects he “programmed” the later permutational stretti, then applied the expositions as “programs”, “algorithms”. However paradoxical, it follows from the logic of composing a quadruple fugue that the combinations joining all four subjects and rendered the latest when performing the work were already completed in the very firststage of composition because the possibility of overlapping the four subjects [1+2+3+4] is the sine qua non of writing a quadruple fugue. The discovery of the permutational matrix was one of the most essential conditions to achieve that the reconstruction of Contrapunctus XIV could come near to the original form planned by Bach./ Répertoire / Orgue

Prelude Canonique for Chamber Orchestra (version 2009) Canonic elements play an important role in this work. Shortly after the opening a two-part canonic passage is introduced by the violins. Later on this energetic music shows up as three-part and four-part canons in different orchestrations. But next to the canons a different kind of music is present almost from the beginning: fragments of choral-like melodic lines. Gradually choral-like music gets a more prominent role. By a process of manipulating the fragments in different ways (i.e. argumentation and superpositioning) a more extensive version of the choral isprogressively (re)constructed. At the end of the piece the choral appear in its ‘original’ form. Niels Rosing-Schow 2009

Ã?dition Originale-This volume in the series ?Les Éditions Originales Durand · Salabert · Eschig? contains Maurice Duruflé?s works for Organ taken from the editions in Durand catalogue. The original engravings are reproduced giving musicians a valuable record of how these major works were first published whether in the composer?s lifetime or posthumously. With Olivier Messiaen Maurice Duruflé formed part of an illustrious generation of composers who received the decisive imprint of Tournemire either through his teaching or through his immense cycle L?Orguemystiquer. In his catalogue Organ music naturally has a major place. He did not force his own nature into any new aesthetic as he championed modality such as medieval music has codified it asserting that ?I have always inhabited Gregorian chant which is obviously a fairly well-behaved language?.
