Oratorio-Immediately after completing “St. Paul” in 1836 Mendelssohn mulled over the idea of composing a further oratorio. However a whole decade elapsed before the composition of “Elijah” which takes as its theme the story of the Biblical prophet from the 1 st Book of Kings. When he received the invitation to write a major work for the Birmingham Music Festival Mendelssohn finally embarked on work on the oratorio. “Elijah” was premiered in 1846 in Birmingham with great success and has enjoyed great popularity ever since.Following the firstperformance Mendelssohn undertook a revision of the oratorio in which whole numbers were removed and new ones substituted. This is the version which was first heard in 1847 in London and which is still performed today. To mark the Mendelssohn anniversary year 2009 the Mendelssohn specialist Douglass Seaton Professor at Florida State University prepared a critical new edition of the oratorio. The edition reflects the latest research findings and includes both English and German singing texts.A critical commentary completes the new edition.- One of Mendelssohn’s most popular works in an edition reflecting the latest editorial knowledge- Bärenreiter-Urtext including numbers from the original version for the first time- English and German singing texts- Critical Commentary (Eng)

The Funeral March is composed in C and proceeds at a grand and stately pace. The Flute duet provides an excellent contrast to the majesty of the piece.Handel’s great oratorio of 1739 Saul was conceived on a grand scale to tell the Old Testament story of King Saul David the slayer of Goliath and Saul’s son Jonathan. By the end both Saul and Jonathan have been killed and this moving funeral march marks that sombre moment in the oratorio. Saul is considered one of Handel's greatest works with particular praise for the Choral writing and for this funeral march.

Modern and Contemporary Music. Par . Now finally in English too: The third part of the organ method Historical Performance Practice in Organ Playing follows on from part two with contributions by Guy Bovet (on Jehan Alain), Hans-Ola Ericsson, Anders Ekenberg, Markus Rupprecht (Olivier Messiaen), Hans Fagius (Maurice Duruflé), Jeremy Filsell (Marcel Dupré), Bernhard Haas (Arnold Schönberg, Ernst Krenek, John Cage, György Ligeti, and others, plus the latest developments) and Armin Schoof (neoclassicism). As in the first two parts of the organ method, here too a representative selection of composers is discussed. Alongside mainly personal recollections (e.g. from Hans Fagius) there are analytical essays (including by Jeremy Filsell). Bernhard Haas has organised one section of his text as an introduction to the playing techniques and aesthetics of new music, beginning with pieces which are easy to play. This English edition contains new chapters by Kevin Bowyer (The Development of New Organ Music in Britain / Contemporary Organ Music in North America). Laukvik?s organ method Historical Performance Practice in Organ Playing has now become established as a standard work. It is aimed at organists who want to incorporate the latest thinking on historical performance practice into their interpretations of works. The three volumes provide a practical introduction in a detailed, scholarly and comprehensible form, by giving organists as precise a picture of the interpretative traditions and aims of previous and modern/ contemporary eras as possible. The editions are aimed not only at organists, but also at organ teachers who are looking for a manual to use in their teaching. / Date parution : 2022-05-03/ Recueil / Orgue

In 1739 Bach's Third Part of the Clavier Übung was published on 80 pages closely printed. Ever since then the collection has been regarded as a high point in the history of organ composition as it offers an impressive cross section of Bach's artistry. This present volume is an updated edition of Volume 4, Series IV, of the New Bach Edition, presented by Manfred Tessmer in 1969. A fully revised edition proved unnecessary, as there were relatively few corrections affecting the musical text. However, the volume now includes a detailed Preface by Christoph Wolff which discusses not only the work's genesis but also offers an up-to-date description of the sources. For the new engraving of the musical text page-turns were reviewed and improved.Bach's autograph is considered lost and so the main source is the original print of the collection from 1739. In collaboration with the Leipzig Bach Archive and its database Bach digital this new edition includes links to two important copies of the original print which contain hand-written entries by Bach himself.Any complete scholarly-critical edition of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach must, in the interest of its use by researchers and performers, incorporate intervening new discoveries wherever possible. With this in mind, Bärenreiter has entered an agreement with the Leipzig Bach Archive to reissue particular volumes as applicable, either in updated performing editions based on the New Bach Edition or in thoroughly revised editions based on the New Bach Edition - revised. In this way, each new performing edition will represent the cutting edge of research.Further hallmarks of this new generation of Urtext editions will be detailed, up-to-date Prefaces and newly engraved musical texts with optimum page turns. Each volume will list incipits with links to the relevant manuscripts in Bach digital thereby enabling the user to gain quick access to the sources.-With altered readings integrated into the musical text taking into account new musicological evidence-With a new Preface (Ger/Eng) discussing this work and its sources by Christoph Wolff-With links to the relevant sources in Bach digital via http://links.baerenreiter.com-Newly engraved and with improved page turns-Format: 24cm x 30.5cm / Orgue

Variations for Piano Op.27 arranged for OrganIt may come as a surprise to learn that Anton Webern?s delicate refined and intimate music can be transferred to the organ. Xavier Darasse (1934-1992) a pupil of Duruflé and Messiaen has produced an organ adaptation of the famous three-movement Piano Variations Op.27 (1936) a groundbreaking composition in serial music. His arrangement is accompanied by judicious registration marks and division of the manuals. The result is fully convincing making this late work with its chamber-like atmosphere attractive to organists.Darasse?s adaptation is now presented to the public for the first time. His pupil BernhardHaas an organ professor in Munich has prefixed his teacher?s manuscript with a foreword containing important suggestions regarding the work?s performance.A première publicationPerformance suggestions from Bernhard Haas

from the Opera 'Tannhauser'-During his time in Weimar (1848 1861) Liszt developed a then entirely new organ style which stands out for both orchestral and pianistic elements. Together with the choirmaster Alexander Wilhelm Gottschalg (1827 1908) from Tiefurt he regularly initiated so-called 'organ conferences'. And it was at the suggestion of Gottschalg that the present arrangement of the Pilgrim's Choir from the opera 'Tannhäuser' was written. With his version for organ Liszt by means of this example laid the foundations for the (not always undisputed) tradition extending to the present day of organ transcriptions from the operas of Wagner. 'Organistic' elements in the Pilgrims' Choir are theclassical chorale theme the solemn 'sacred' atmosphere of the solemn tempo as well as the expressive cantability. The linear intensification from the antiphonal-organ-like piano dolce of the beginning to the 'full organ' can be realized in a convincing manner with an orchestrally conceived three-manual organ with the sensitive use of the swell box and the successive seamless build-up of the crescendo pedal being of particular significance. Important repertoire piece marking the 200th birthday of Richard Wagner in 2013.

This solo Organ work written in 2009 and dedicated to the memory of the great 20th Century English church composer Herbert Howells has been received with high critical acclaim by both Organ specialists and general music lovers.Although he captures a glimpse of Howells' middle period style and intense harmonic language Venables manages not to stoop to pastiche treading his own distinct path and producing a noble and poetic piece which would not be out of place as the centerpiece of any concert programme. It was used for this purpose to great effect in Ian Tracey's recital marking the 76th anniversary of the great Liverpool Cathedral Organ which alsoshowed its special suitability for performance on powerful cathedral-type instruments. Also performed successfully by Adrian Lucas.Approx. 9 minutes in length.
