Commissioned by the award-winning Kalamazoo (MI) Concert Band Alleluia is a convergence of hauntingly emotive themes that culminate in breath-taking builds. The Kalamazoo Gazette described it as the “pinnacle of theconcert” in which it was premiered adding that Hazo's master composition takes the listener from “...bells and chimes to full Hosannas. The result was transfiguring! It first fades like a sunset then explodes inwhite light bringing the audience to their feet.” Written for mature ensembles this work will have a powerful impact on the performers as well as all who hear it. Band directors work hard to build balanced ensembles but it's often a challenge to keep the trombone section strong. Trombone players carry one of the larger instruments back and forth to school and they don't get to play the“tune” as often as they would like. Light Overture - A Symphonic Entertainment was composed by Poul Ruders in 2006. Commissioned by the Alabama Symphony Orchestra and Music Director and Principal Conductor Justin Brown for Alabama Power Company’s 100 Year Anniversary Concert. Light Overture subtitled A Symphonic Entertainment is a short piece for symphony orchestra lasting approximately eight minutes. Light Overture is focusing on two interpretations of the word light: ”light” as in the absence of darkness and “light” as in easily comprehensible; in other words a piece with few or no metaphysicalconnotations. It is just a piece setting a festive mood as is often the case with this sort of short “concert opener”. However the journey through Light Overture is not entirely happy-go-lucky. Once in a while slightly darker colours are introduced for the sake of variety and contrast. And formally the composition is quite strict: an outright Prelude and Fugue the former sliding seamlessly into the latter. The Fugue juggles not only its own tune but also picks up stuff from the Prelude. Poul Ruders May 2006

Julius Fucik (1872-1916) was born in Prague Czech Republic. He studied under Antonin Dvorák and at a young age played in military bands and later became bandmaster a profession he practiced in various cities with many bands. In 1913 he settled in Berlin where he started his own music publishing house. As a composer Fucik is known for his light entertaining music however he also wrote chamber music songs choral works a mass a requiem and an unfinished opera. Many of his works have fallen into oblivion but many of his marches such as Einzug der Gladiatoren Regimentskinder and Florentiner Marsch are still often played. With the concert overture Marinarella Fucik takes us toan imaginary seaside resort on a beautiful spring day. Marinarella a girl of the sea accompanies us on our stroll. Leisurely walking couples on the boulevard the murmur of the sea fragments of a waltz melody from a café and a concert band performing a promenade concert pass you by. A fantastic opening work for any concert.

Ray of light was composed for the 75th anniversary of the Royal Wind Band (De Heidegalm Berkenbos). The mining environment of Berkenbos (Heusden-Zolder, B) is a proof of what used to be one of the most flourishing industries inLimburg viz. the Mining Industry. Going down the shaft in the elevator for the first time was a sensational experience for every miner: the noise of the closing doors, the shock experienced when the lift cage started moving tofall down whizzingly into the deep at a speed of 30 km an hour. The opening theme of Ray of Light doesn?t only reflect the bravery of the descending miners but also their anxiety, their doubt and insecurity. In the solo passage,the anxiety during the long walk in the dark through the mine corridors with only headlamps and mine lamps is clearly audible. Working in the mines wasn?t without any danger. The very flammable and at times explosive mine gasesalways posed a hidden threat. Apart from that there was always the continuous danger of collapse. The beautiful choral movements are therefore an ode to the miners that left their lives in the mine. The eastern scale refers tothe multicultural character of the mining environment of Berkenbos with its many commercial shops and different types of housing inherent in mining architecture. The mining profession is still a very dangerous job, but at the endof the dark corridor the miners still see a beam of light as a sign of hope.

The opening phrase on solo clarinet appears throughout the piece and could be seen as the central idea of the work the human spirit itself. The faster centralsection is about the struggle to overcome the pain we experience and at bar 88 the moment of catharsis occurs. This signals a change of mood and from then on the clarinet motif is transformed into a feeling of joy and optimism. We have entered the light.

A fanfare introduces This festive march is introduced by a lively fanfare which leads into the first playful melodic line which features a regular dynamic alternation and a light syncopated rhythm. After the traditional bass solo the first theme returns. The initial theme performed by piano and cantabile trio later sounds in a jubilant forte with various figurations in the higher woodwinds. The fine work Mountain March is suitable as a street march but will also gain much appreciation on the concert platform.
