The Dreamers - A Gothic Tale for Horn Trio by Niels Marthinsen. Programme note: The Dreamers for horn violin and piano is the sixth of a series of seven compositions named after Karen Blixen's collection of short stories Seven Gothic Tales. My musical gothic tales are written for very different ensembles - THE SUPPER AT ELSINORE is a saxophone quartet THE OLD CHEVALIER is for bass trombone and piano THE MONKEY is a chamber orchestra work - but they all share musical material in a criss-cross of contextual references reminiscent of Blixen's narrative complexity: Themes and motivs from one pieceappear in others in new and surprising shapes and combinations. Karen Blixen's THE DREAMERS has the most complex narrative structure of all her seven gothic tales. The story is made up of three tales with different narrators but with the same principal caracter in various disguises all three imbedded within a fourth tale that serves as a framework for the entire short story. The main story line unravels the life of a famous opera diva who looses her voice during a terrible fire. Before this her life was perpetual bliss and the tragedy drives her into assuming different personality guises in order to escape reality.Toward the end she is confronted with her true identity and dies.THE DREAMERS isn't 'about' anything. The music is inspired by the artistic content of Blixen's short story - it's emotionalism dramatic construction atmosphere period and settings - but unfolds in time and musical space in ways that are completely independent of the story's narrative progression...except one might say that the three players try their best to either catch or escape each other and that when they finally meet it happens abruptly even tragically - and only barely provides a little consolation.

Phantasmagoria for Violin Violoncello and Piano was composed by Bent Sørensen in 2007. First performance by Trio con Brio 12 Aug 2007 in Roskilde Denmark.Programme note:My Piano Trio “Phantasmagoria” is in five movements. It all began with the fifth movement which originally was a tiny piece for cello and piano. After re-composing this little piece for piano trio I worked composed backwards – The fourth movement – third movement - and I finally got to the beginning of the piece. It all begins with the violin – solo – heavily muted but aggressive and gradually the cello andthe piano enter as shadows of the violin. The first movement ends in a dark shadow of an aria from my opera “Under the Sky”. All five movements are full of shadows of all kinds. Shadows of fragments and traces of movements appear in other movements. Music voices instruments appear behind each other as a play of shadows. “Shadow play” was the first title on my mind but a shadow play can be more physical – the shadow can come alive – alive behind the shadows. Phantasmagoria is a shadow play in darkness where contours of persons and music voices and instruments - create adventures behind each other. “Phantasmagoria” was commissioned by Franz Schubert Society Denmark and dedicated to Trio con Brio Copenhagen. Work for Chamber Ensemble dating from 1989.The composer writes: The Title SHADOWLAND refers on the one hand to a blurred ‘Landscape’ of shadows where small shadows are formed behind other shadows and where the outlines are constantly disintegrating. On the other hand the title refers to the fanciful and unreal landscapes I felt in the music while I was writing it. SHADOWLAND has four movements with proportions 4-7-4-3. These proportions can be found on various levels from the smallest cell to the largest form. The first movement is divided into four parts which have exactly the same proportions as the whole pjece and behind the fastrunning melodies and trills thatdominate the whole movement one can hear in the second third and fourth parts anticipations of the second third and fourth movements respectively. The second movement begins at the edge of silence with almost unperceptible glissandi and indistinct chorales. Gradually the hushed landscape is drowned out by sudden expressive melodic outbursts and ends with violent dance rhythms. The third movement is built up of clouds of staccato tones and is a further development of the pointillistic ideas from CLAIROBSCUR. In th last movement the horn plays a long soloistic melody line which the other instruments imitate and echo. These echoes swamp the horn line from time to time. SHADOWLAND was commissioned by and dedicated to The London Sinfonietta.

It was a place I visited frequently in the months I spent as visiting Professor at the University in late 2001. So soon after the attack on the New York Trade Centre the worldfelt a very unstable place especially to be so far from my Australian home. It was difficult to make much sense of existence in a world of fanatical fundamentalism - both Islamic and Christian. Perhaps for comfort I foundmyself thinking back a thousand years to the vital earth based spirituality of Hildegard of Bingen and uncovered an Antiphon she had composed 'Nunc Aperuit'. This chant became the basis of the work I have written forOkeanos in response to an invitation from Jinny Shaw whom I met in York last year. In English translation the words of the chant translate as 'Now the closed door has opened for us / What the serpent hassuffocated in woman./ Therefore shines forth in thedawn/ the flower from the Virgin Mary. ' The music of 'The Quiet Place' is a simple meditation which explores the moods of this text often retreating into a silencewhich is both breath and transcendence. - Anne Boyd

Premiered by The Aarhus Symphony Orchestra conducted by Giancarlo Andretta at the Aarhus Concert Hall 14 January 2010. Programme noteThe short feisty Bourrée from Handel´s famous Water Music (First Suite in F major) has for some years been hovering at the back of my mind as possessing the perfectpotential for a series of variations. Not unlike the short 'morsel' by Henry Purcell (the witches Ho-ho-ho-chorus from the opera Dido and Aeneas) which kicks off the ten variations of my orchestral work Concerto in Pieces the music per se is not particularly interesting but it nevertheless grows on you and is difficult to get rid of. It is merely a handful of sequences (a technique much used in the Baroque era - a method in which the same motif is being shifted up and down in a specified order). Actually it is only the first eight bars of the Bourrée which I haul through the wringer. It would be obvious to assume that Handel Variations make up a sequel to Concerto in Pieces but in spite of the similarity in character between the two chosen themes the Handel Variations are far more symphonically coherent. There are no less than ninety (!) variations and each variation (they are relatively short ranging from four up to forty-something bars) runs seamlessly into the next creating a huge symphonic body of constantly changing colours. I set out with the original theme without interfering but the 'erosion' begins to gnaw away at the theme already from the first variation. Imagine a vast gallery of Handel portraits in which Georg Friedrich appears at first fully recognizable but then the 'disfiguration' sets in and

Par PART ARVO. Chad Smith, Artistic Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, has long nurtured the desire to commission a new work by Arvo Pärt. When the Los Angeles Philharmonic submitted this idea to Arvo Pärt in February 2007, the suggestion came at precisely the right moment. Pärt was working at that time with an ancient canon in Church Slavonic containing a prayer to a guardian angel - the connection to 'Los Angeles' was irresistible. Pärt was further inspired to take the commission by the idea of seeing this work performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, one of the best orchestras in the world, under its music director Esa-Pekka Salonen, and in the Walt Disney Concert Hall, one of the most exciting concert buildings of our time. The Canberra International Music Festival / Ars Musica Australis and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music joined the project as co-commissioners, thanks to the committed work of director Chris Latham. It may come as a surprise that it has taken so long (37 years) for Pärt to produce his fourth symphony. Symphony No. 3 emerged in 1971, in a time of transition before Pärt had fully developed the 'Tintinnabuli style' which he still employs today. Since developing this style, Pärt has not written any orchestral works which could be called 'symphonic' in scope or structure. With Symphony No. 4, which he calls 'Los Angeles', he creates a reference to this essential phase in his compositional life. Symphony No. 4 incorporates Pärt's 'These Words…' for string orchestra, which was premiered in May 2008 in Copenhagen. As was previously seen in some of Pärt's early instrumental works, all parameters of the text (number of syllables, inflection, punctuation etc) play a decisive role in the structure of the composition. Arvo Pärt has dedicated Symphony No. 4 'Los Angeles' to Mikhail Khodorkovsky./ Répertoire / Orchestre à Cordes, Harpe, Timbales et Percussion

Opera with a Prologue and four Acts (First version) / Opera in five Acts (Second version)
Dialogue versions. Par GOUNOD CHARLES. Charles Gounod’s “Faust” secured its international recognition in the version as an entirely sung opera, which from thenceforth has largely obscured the fact that the work was originally composed with spoken dialogues. The early versions staged prior to the 1869 performance at the Paris Opéra containing substantial unknown material and with dialogues and melodramas are the subject of this new edition. (The third version “version opera” was published in a separate edition BA 8713 in 2016.)
Even as the rehearsals were taking place at the Théâtre-Lyrique in 1858, during the first series of performances at the theatre in 1859, furthermore as the 1862 revival was approaching and during the performances on the smaller stage at the Place du Châtelet, there were constant changes and revisions. It is, thus, impossible to identify manifestly definitive versions. Nevertheless, by drawing on the entire source material now at hand (including fascinating material only recently discovered) and on the whole gamut of aspects communicated by the reception, Paul Prévost systematically presents us with a score laid out in two main versions in whose chronology constancy and change become transparent. With all the musical changes having been documented, the result is a practicable score for performances which reveals a still far too unknown “Faust” – a “Faust” that is rooted in the tradition of the opéra comique.
Quite a few musical numbers are published as a score for the first time in this edition: the trio for Faust, Wagner and Siebel “À l’étude ô mon maître”, the duet of Valentin and Marguerite “Adieu, mon bon frère!”, Méphistophélès’ air “Maître Scarabée”, Siebel’s romance “Versez vos chagrins dans mon âme!”, Valentin’s air with chorus “Chaque jour, nouvelle affaire”, the chorus of witches “Un deux et trois”, and also seven melodramas whose missing or incomplete orchestration has been written for our edition. It was only recently that the long-lost second part of Faust’s original cavatina “Salut! demeure chaste et pure” was unearthed. Only in details of orchestration do other numbers differ from the well-known pieces./ Répertoire / Opéra

For Flute, Clarinet In Bb, Harp, and String Quartet. Par LASH HANNAH. Form and Postlude is a piece in one continuous movement but with a distinct postlude which ends the work. I play throughout with the idea of pacing on many levels: the largest level is the idea of proportion of sections to one another, then harmonic rhythm (in the broad sense), then harmonic rhythm on a more local level, and of course then on the surface of the music there is instrumental texture and how fast the notes go by. Along with this sense of play in terms of the pacing and motion is the idea of color. I love this ensemble, and its palette of color has been part of my DNA, as it were, for many years, because Ravel’s wonderful work Introduction et Allegro is such a cornerstone in the harpist’s repertoire. While composing, I found myself feeling that I was entering into this colorful world that is possible with this combination of instruments, almost as if it were possible to step into a painter’s palette in a real and visceral way, physically interacting with all the different colors. The title Form and Postlude nods to Ravel’s Introduction et Allegro, although my piece lives in its own very distinct space apart from Ravel.

Variants on a Shaped Note Tune was commissioned by the Homewood Middle School Band (Homewood AL) and was premiered at the Alabama Music Educators Association Conference in January 2006. The title refers to a traditionalearly American singing style based on reading a system of shapes rather than musical notes. Based on the Scottish tune “Pisgah” from the shape note songbook The Sacred Harp the Variants begin simply with astatement by unison clarinets. From there begins a series of distinctive variations featuring an ingenious mix of styles tempos and instrumentation. Destined to become a staple on required contest lists for years to come thiswork provides an exceptional complement for any program or festival. Dur: 5:00 (Includes Full Performance CD)

Delta for Saxofon Cello og Piano (2005). Programme note: Some of my works are created in several stages where an earlier work or movement are reborn or recomposed as part of a new work. For instance “Suite for Martin” (1967) for saxophone amplified accordion and prepared piano - used in a Danish documentary film “Kongens Enghave” - was rearranged by me in 2004 in a new instrumentation for saxophone cello and piano and named MELANCOLIA (duration 12 minutes) which became the third movement (with the title MALINCONIA) in an enlarged version from 2005 with the title DELTA (duration around 20minutes). A delta is be nature moving outwards or rather downwards downstream. This movement is characteristic for all three works mentioned. EUFONIA. In the first movement of DELTA the music changes from the light hearted and harmonious towards a darker sound. In the second movement NOSTALGIA this darker colour is intensified dominating the whole movement. MALINCONIA the third and last movement completes the direction downwards – during six shorter sections – going towards a black edged pessimism (and a “black sound”). Per Nørgård (2005)

Quintet for Wind Instruments in E flat major op. 88 2-Reicha published a total of 24 wind quintets for the ?classical? scoring of flute oboe clarinet horn and bassoon; op. 88 no. 2 is one of the best-loved and most played. ?If it were possible to surpass Haydn in the compositionof quartets and quintets Reicha would have succeeded with these quintets? thus raved the ?Allgemeine Musikalische Zeitung? on a performance of Reicha?s quintets ?it seems to me that it is impossible to unite more correctnessand clarity with more inventiveness and originality.? This work exudes inspiration and spirit from every note. In addition to the parts we have also produced a handy study edition of the score.

Concert Suite. Par HENZE HANS WERNER. Henze also wrote the music of the successful film Die verlorene Ehre der Katharina Blum, co-produced by Volker Schlöndorff and Margarethe von Trotta from the novel by Heinrich Böll: 'Böll's novella is about a young woman whose life is ruined because of the persecution and slander of the German yellow press. The story is set in Cologne and its surroundings and casts a light on Germany in the Seventies: estrangement, destruction of the environment, triumph of the middle classes, use of force by the police. The music comments on these circumstances, rather than describing them. Everything that sounds soft and sentimental refers to Katharina and her friend who is pursued by the police and suspected of being a terrorist. Scenes of violence, traffic chaos and, right in the middle, the carnival of Cologne are subjects of the other pieces.'/ Répertoire / Orchestre de Chambre
