While Gordon Jacobs composed a vast amount of music more than four hundred pieces -- he was particularly celebrated for his work for Viola and for woodwinds as well as for his books on music pedagogy. Jacob had an early success with his Viola Concerto of 1926 which was premiered at a Promenade concert and which was the beginning of a series of strong contributions to Viola repertoire. This Sonatina for Viola and Piano demonstrates his sensitive writing for the instrument. It works very well when performed on clarinet as well. While many composers of the 20th century rejected serialism atonality and other avant garde effects in favour of Romanticism Jacob was much morean adherent to the musical models of the classic and baroque eras while still encompassing modern harmonies. His work Music for a Festival for symphonic wind band and brass ensemble was used for the post-war Festival of Britain and he arranged the British national anthem for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.

Alto Et Piano

For Viola and Piano this is the composer's first opused work. Premiered at the Wigmore Hall in July 1959 by Cecil Aronowitz and Margaret Kitchen.Wood: In 1957 I knew I had newly discovered the music of Schoenberg and hispupils and I knew at once that they were to show me the way forward for my music; as indeed they have ever since. The revelation was primarily an emotional experience for me and however imperfectly their influence wasreceived it was obviously reflected in the all-out chromaticism (new for me then) in the many chains of twelve notes or lesser chromatic formations (which do not here amount to serial working and have only rarely done sosince) in the characteristic harmonic and rhythmic formations the wide and sometimes angular intervals of the melodies and in general the introverted romanticism. Anyway I knew then that this was the sort of music that Ihenceforth would want to write and so I called these Variations my Opus One.The declamatory Introduction leads into the Theme heard on the viola. Six Variations follow of which No.3 is the most violent and No.4 the mostsustainedly lyrical. The recitative-like sixth variation leads into the Finale a more extended movement. The Theme returning on the piano leads to a climax at which there is a citation from Beethoven’s C minor Variations forpiano. Then their characteristics sequence of chords is heard on the piano as an accompaniment to the final statement of my own theme on the viola in the closing bars of the work.

The peripatetic life and career of the Belgian composer Henry Vieuxtemps anticipated the European concept almost prophetically in the 19th century. The best example is his Elégie of 1848: written in St. Petersburg, it celebrated its greatest triumphs in Paris, was printed in Offenbach am Main, and enthusiastically reviewed in London. Critics were quick to note the expressive contrasts as well as the bravura style of the coda, which was 'elegant and at the same time brilliant?. Following the publication of the Sonata op. 36 (HN 577), the Elégie op. 30 now takes its place among Vieuxtemps' viola works for the first time in an Urtext edition. Tabea Zimmermann was once again entrusted with the bowings- the preface was written by the Vieuxtemps specialist Marie Cornaz. / Alto Et Piano

Melodie was originally written for Violin and Piano in 1878 as the third of the three Memories that made up the composer’s opus 47. It was dedicated to Brailovo the Ukrainian Country estate where it was finished. Since then it has been re-arranged many times most famously for Violin with Orchestra. This arrangement for Viola and Piano by Alan Arnold is part of the popular Viola World series. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840 - 1893) is one of the best-known Russian composers in the west. He was the first Russian composer to write in the European style generating criticism from his peers for abandoning the Russian culturalheritage but enjoying acclaim across both Europe and America.

In addition to the numerous violin pieces in H. Wieniawski's compositional output there is only one piee for viola and piano ''Reverie'' which is without opus number. The ''Dream'' ost probably comes from that period when Wieniawski stayed in London (1858-1859) and apart from his regular concert activities took part in chamber concerts which were very popular at that time. During one of the Beethoven-Quartett-Society concerts a quartet of four outstanding virtuosos (Ernst Joachim Wieniawski and Piatti the cellist) performed together. Wieniawski who played the viola on that occasion presumably concluded that there were too few original compositions for thisbeautiful instrument and decided to write a short viola piece himself. He endowed it with a lyrical character and the stamp of fervour characteristic of his other compositions. (S. Kamasa)

Per Viola E Pianoforte. Par CALLIGARIS SERGIO. Sergio Calligaris was born in Ros...(+)
Per Viola E Pianoforte. Par CALLIGARIS SERGIO. Sergio Calligaris was born in Rosario (1941), Argentina. He is one of the last musicians to incarnate the traditional 19th century figure of pianist, teacher and composer, inaugurated at the beginning of the 19th century by Muzio Clementi and carriedon after that by a sequence of famous names that the history of music has handed down to us. As a pianist, he began to give public performances at the age of 13, making his debut in his home town Rosario. Following this success, he embarked upon an extremely busy career as a soloist, giving numerous recitals in Buenos Aires and other citiesin Argentina. He continued to take advanced lessons with eminent exponents of the most prestigious international piano schools. In 1974 he became an Italian citizen and settled in Rome, teaching piano as principal instrument at the S. Pietro a Majella StateConservatory in Naples, the Luisa DAnnunzio Conservatory in Pescara and the Alfredo Casella Conservatory in Aquila. As a composer, he began - at just 9 years of age - to study in the rigorous school of Paul Hindemith, under the guidance of Father Luis Machado, from whom he inherited a love of counterpoint and a strong taste for harmony. He took a diploma incomposition, counterpoint and fugue at the age of 16 at the Amigos del Arte Society in Rosario, going on in 1964 to do an advanced course in 12-tone counterpoint at the Cleveland Institute of Music. The catalogue of his compositions, which has nowreached Op. 55, encompasses a huge range of instrumental/vocal chamber music and symphonic works: a vast and articulated catalogue, in which Sergio Calligaris’s composition expresses its inspiration through the dramatic development of a dialecticalcontrast between the two natures of the composer’s personality - the elegiac and the dithyrambic - which confront and interact with each other giving rise to artistic outcomes of a deeply moving nature. / Niveau : Intermédiaire / Date parution : 1905-06-19/ Répertoire / Alto et Piano

Reduction for viola and piano-William Walton composed his Viola Concerto in 1928-9 and it was given its premiere at a Promenade Concert at Queen's Hall London on 3rd October 1929. In the beginning Viola players adjusted the solo line to fit their own ideas of the work's character and Walton was generally happy to accomodate this. However he came to regard one player's version above all the others for its discipline and balance - that of Frederick Riddle. Riddle's edition was originally published with a Piano reduction of the first Orchestration in 1938 and it is this that forms that basis for the solo line in this edition. This present Piano reduction was made by Geoffrey Pratleyand published in 1993.
