Christmas as celebrated in England is a relatively newtradition dating from the time of Queen Victoria. Herhusband Prince Albert was from Germany and he broughtmany German Christmas traditions with him, including theChristmas tree and Christmascards, and even carols such asHark, the Herald Angels Sing. Philip Sparke has however useda varied selection of English melodies to arrange into his?Festival of Carols?.The choir parts are seperately available (order no. AMP 227-050).

Hoewel de Engelsen een lange traditie kennen in het zingen van carols zijn veel van de melodieën die er worden gezongen afkomstig van het Europese vasteland - of uit Amerika. Desondanks heeft Philip Sparke een gevarieerde selectievan Engelse melodieën kunnen samenstellen voor dit prachtige ‘Festival of Carols’ - dat zowel met als zonder koor kan worden uitgevoerd.

Weihna chten, wie es heute in England gefeiert wird, ist eine relativ junge Tradition aus dem 19, Jahrhundert, die der deutsche Ehemann von Königin Victoria mit in seine neue Heimat brachte. Viele gebräuchliche Weihnachtslieder stammen ebenfalls nichtaus England. Philip Sparke gelang es jedoch, eine abwechslungsreiche Sammlung von Liedern aus seiner Heimat zu diesem schönen englischen Weihnachtslieder-Festival “ zu formen.Die optional einsetzbaren Chorstimmen sind unter der Artikelnummer AMP227-050 separat erhältlich.

« La plupart des traditions de Noël en Angleterre sont relativement récentes. Montée sur le trône en 1837, la reine Victoria (née de Hanovre) régnera jusqu’ sa mort en 1901. En 1840, elle épousa son cousin, le prince Albert de Saxe-Cobourg-Gotha. Leprince consort, originaire d’Allemagne, importa bon nombre de traditions de Noël allemandes au Royaume-Uni. Ainsi, il fit découvrir aux Anglais la coutume du sapin et les cartes de Noël, entre autres, contribuant largement au Noël typiquement anglaistel que nous le connaissons aujourd’hui.Bien que les chants de Noël font l’objet d’une longue tradition en Angleterre, de nombreuses mélodies que nous chantons proviennent ducontinent européen ou des États-Unis. Je savais bien que le célébrissimeSile nt Night (Douce nuit) était d’origine autrichienne et que Hark, the Herald Angels Sing (Écoutez le chant des Anges) était d’origine allemande. Pourtant, quelle ne fut pas ma surprise d’apprendre qu’Away in a Manger (Sur la paillefraîche) ou encore We Three Kings nous venaient des États-Unis et que Ding, Dong Merrily on High était un noël d’origine française. Quoiqu’il en soit, j’ai réussi constituer un canevas de mélodies anglaises pour réaliser cefestival de chants de Noël. »Philip SparkeRemarques sur l’interprétatio n : Cet arrangement est adapté pour une interprétation avec ou sans Chœur. His music is therefore veryexpressive, containing creative solutions to possible problems. Special ways of playing make his music particularly interesting for the winds, but the percussion section is also featured in his special effects.

The world of the animalsalways plays on ones imagination. In Animal Kingdom, William Vean has portrayed a number of animals in a special manner:

Kevin Kangaroo - The jumping character of this animal can be heard in different voices. The swing style alsoemphasizes the characteristic movements of the kangaroo. Playing in swing style can be practised by using scales.

Eddy Elephant - For some of his smaller fellow fauna friends this can be quite an ordeal, but for Eduard (Eddy for friendsand intimates) it is his daily walk.

Baldrick Bat - Baldrick the Bat is a mysterious character. This can be heard in the fast moving valves and keys, accompanied by special effects in the percussion section.

Curtis Camel - Curtisthe Camel trudges across the desert, feeling bored. The idea that the horizon will never change does not affect him anymore. He has accepted his fate. The distinctive tones from the gypsy scale provide the suitable oriental sounds.

BettyButterfly - Butterfly Betty elegantly, and without worries, flutters from flower to flower in the garden. Her motto: Carpe Diem (Seize the Day). Betty is a one-day butterfly.

Marvin Monkey - A swing monkey stirs up the feelings. Evenmembers of the orchestra will look like real monkeys. How about your audience?

Each part has its own difficulties and challenges.
Important in the first part is playing in swing (triplets feeling). This can be practised usingscales.
In the second part ensemble playing and balance are important.
In Baldrick additional information on the effects that have to be played might be useful. New sounds are, of course, welcome.
Curtis the Camel introduces thegypsy scale. Additional explanation of the use of the scale might be useful. Key changes are interesting in this part. A slight accent on the first beat of the bar will add to the charm of this part.
Marvin the Monkey brings back the swingrhythm that was introduced in the first part, alternated by a straight part with attention to chromatics and articulation.

A story teller will definitely be an asset when performing this composition.

Tevens lopen de melodielijnen zowel door alle 4 destemmen als alle percussie partijen, zodat iedere muzikant de gelegenheid krijgt om te soleren dan wel te begeleiden.

Baldrick Bat - De vleermuis Baldrick is eenmysterieus type. Dat mysterieuze aspect wordt auditief weergegeven door het snel indrukken van ventielen en kleppen, ondersteund door slagwerkeffecten.

Part 1: The Entrance & Parade [with animation]
The opening of the park is a fact. A day fullof fun and pleasure awaits! You and the other visitors will be confronted with all the rides, attractions and adventures the theme park has to offer. Which ride shall we do first?! There is so much to do and experience on this day in the park! Aparade of colorful floats and park figures is passing by.
Let the fun begin!

Part 2: The Haunted House [with animation]
The only ride in the park that is not related to fun, is the Haunted House. Here visitors will be challengedto visit a house full of ghosts, creepy figures and other ominous things. The clock strikes twelve, there is no turning back. Ghosts are whispering, yelling, screaming... Fortunately it is almost one oclock, so we can leave this creepy placequickly.

P art 3: The Swinging Galleon [with illustrations]
Wha t a huge pirate ship! Each time you swing back and forth, you will feel that weird feeling in your stomach. When you are thrown completely into the top you will have afantastic view over the park, but you can not enjoy it for long. Before you know the ship swings back the other way.

Part 4: The Fairy Tale Ride [with illustrations]
Aft er all those exciting and spectacular rides and attractions,it is time for a peaceful tour in The Fairy Tale Ride. Surrounded by a fairytale setting, you will discover fable figures, talking animals and colorful designs. Such a beauty and tranquility. Having had this experience, we are ready again for thebig rides in the park!

Part 5: The Bumper Cars [with illustrations]
Now its time to crawl behind the wheel of the Bumper Cars! Shall we all chase the conductor?! Before you know you are hit by another visitor or you will bumpagainst someone else. In this tough ride you can prove yourself as a real driver, or perhaps as a really bad one.

Part 6: The Roller Coaster [with illustrations]
The largest, fastest and scariest ride in the park ... we shoulddefinitely do the Roller Coaster! All together in the train, the over-the-shoulder restraints are lowering... be ready to ride. The train leaves the station and is heading for the big lift hill. It will be very scary when the train reaches the topand the train will be plunged down the first drop! Loops, corkscrews and other spectacular coaster elements will follow... Before you know it, the ride of your life is over. Shall we ride it again?!

Part 7: Leaving the Park [withanimation]
Un fortunately everything comes to an end. This day in the theme park is over, but we have a lot new experiences to talk about! The memories of all the funny and spectacular rides will come up when we walk through the park to theexit. Just one look over the shoulder, the amusement park figures are waving at us. Hopefully we will come back again soon!

Saying Goodbye is one of a series of original works in pop, rock and swing styles Philip Sparke has composed to try and give brass bands their own popular vocabulary and identity. It could be described as happy-sad in mood, a feature of much of Sparke’s slower music. A perfect light addition for your concert.

A Stroll in the Park is een werk in de traditie van ‘lopende’ muziek (zoals Promenade uit Moessorgski’s Schilderijententoonstelli ng of Walking the Dog uit Gershwin’s Shall we Dance?). Het beschrijft de genoegensvan een ontspannen wandeling in een stadspark op een zomerse zondagmiddag. De Engelse uitdrukking ‘a walk in the park’ of ‘a stroll in the park’ kan de betekenis hebben van ‘iets betrekkelijk eenvoudigs’ - en daarin ligt een duidelijkeaanwijzing over de manier waarop dit werk gespeeld moet worden: ontspannen, zorgeloos en relaxed.

Saying Goodbye ist ein Stück aus einer Reihe von Originalwerken in Pop-, Rock- und Swingstilen, die Philip Sparke komponierte, um Brass Bands mit einer eigenen populären Sprache und Identität auszustatten. Die Stimmung lässt sich als fröhlich-traurig beschreiben, ein Merkmal, das in Sparkes langsamerer Musik oft zu finden ist. Ein originelles neues Werk, das in Ihrem unterhaltsamen Repertoire nicht fehlen sollte!

A Stroll in the Park (“Fl nerie dans le parc”) s’inscrit dans la lignée des fl neries musicales telles que la Promenade extraite des Tableaux d’une Exposition de Moussorgski ou encore Walking the Dog extrait de Shall we Dance? de George Gershwin. La musique décrit les plaisirs et les vertus d’une promenade improvisée dans un parc un dimanche après-midi au cœur de l’été.Promen ade ou fl nerie ? Peu importe le terme choisi, pourvu que le style d’interprétatio n soit décontracté, insouciant et léger.

The piece reflects the composer's fascination with the origins of the universe and deep space in general. The title comes from a theory, formulated by Pythagoras, that the cosmos was ruled by the same laws he had discovered that govern the ratios of note frequencies of the musical scale. (‘Harmonia’ in Ancient Greek, which means scale or tuning rather than harmony - Greek music was monophonic). He also believed that these ratios corresponded to the distances of the six known planets from the sun and that the planets each produced a musical note which combined to weave a continuous heavenly melody (which, unfortunately, we humans cannot hear). In this work, these six notesform the basis of the sections MUSIC OF THE SPHERES and HARMONIA. The pieces opens with a horn solo called t = 0, a name given by some scientists to the moment of the Big Bang when time and space were created, and this is followed by a depiction of the BIG BANG itself, as the entire universe bursts out from a single point. A slower section follows called THE LONELY PLANET which is a meditation on the incredible and unlikely set of circumstances which led to the creation of the Earth as a planet that can support life, and the constant search for other civilisations elsewhere in the universe. ASTEROIDS AND SHOOTING STARS depicts both the benign and dangerous objects that are flying through space and which constantly threaten our planet, and the piece ends with THE UNKNOWN, leaving in question whether our continually expanding exploration of the universe will eventually lead to enlightenment or destruction.

Andrew Mackereth made a touching arrangement of the ‘English’ melody, which suits the tender lyrics perfectly.
