Great Clarinet Quintets(2). Mozart's friendship with Anton Stadler, the clarinetist in Vienna's Royal-Imperial Court Orchestra, led to the composition of his beloved Quintet in A Major. The four-movement piece is arranged for clarinet, two violins, viola, and cello. Brahms's Clarinet Quintet in B minor, also in four movements, is equally popular and often recorded as a companion to Mozart's work. Professional and amateur musicians alike will appreciate this convenient single-volume publication of these frequently performed quintets. Both scores were reproduced from authoritative sources. Durable but inexpensive, this edition features a sturdy binding that allows pages to remain open on music stands for years of use and enjoyment.

With his clarinet quintet, begun in 1915, Reger was remembering his role models Mozart and Brahms, whose works in this genre he particularly admired. This melancholic quintet that is worked through in a strictly motivic way was to be Reger's last opus. Shortly after he had sent it to his publisher, he died of heart attack in May 1916. The quintet was to become his swan song, first performed at a memorial for the composer on 6 November 1916. Almost one hundred years later, we are now publishing it for the first time in an Urtext edition, edited by the Reger scholar Michael Kube. / Quintette De Clarinettes
