This collection of ten compositions for string quartet by Mozart includes six pieces dedicated to Joseph Haydn and three pieces composed for the king of Prussia. The King of Prussia for whom Mozart composed some of these quartets for was by all accounts a Cellist of no mean ability; especially if one may judge by these works whose Cello parts are elaborate and demanding often soaring into the upper ranges leaving the viola to take up its momentarily abandoned role as bass instrument! Works include String Quartet No. 14 in G major K387 'Spring' String Quartet No. 15 in D minor K421 String Quartet No. 16 in E flat K428 String Quartet No. 17 inB flat major K458 'The Hunt' String Quartet No. 18 in A Major K464 'Drum' String Quartet No. 19 in C major K465 'Dissonance' String Quartet No. 20 in D major K499 'Hoffmeister' String Quartet No. 21 in D major K575 'Prussian No. 1' String Quartet No. 22 in B flat major K589 'Prussian No. 2' and String Quartet No. 23 in F Major K590 'Prussian No. 3'

Early String Quartets-The Weinzierl castle in Lower Austria which still stands today can be considered to be the birthplace of a chamber music genre which is firmly established in our present-day repertoire. The young Haydn was invited to spend sometime at this place by a wealthy musical friend and often met up with the steward at the castle the castle priest and the cellist Anton Albrechtsberger to make music. Although his first two works for '2 violins viola and bass'still have five movements their musical value establishes the success of the string quartet in its own right. Also available as part of a 12 part set including all Haydn's works for String Quartet Cat. for String Quartet op. 35a-Josef Suk played second Violin in the Bohemian String Quartet. Since 1914 the ensemble was obliged to perform the Austrian national anthem at the opening of every concert. Suk decided to supplement this obligatory piece with a work inspired by the ancient sacred Bohemian St. Wenceslas hymn. The hymn?s message a plea for the well-being of the Czech people directed at their patron saint was immediately understood by the audience. The Bohemian String Quartet performed this single-movement Meditation for the first time on 27 September 1914; the premiere of the version for string orchestra followed on 22 November 1914 played by the CzechPhilharmonic. That same year the piece was published by Fr. A. Urbánek together with arrangements for Piano and Organ. This first Urtext edition prepared by the Sukscholar Zdenek Nouza is published in two scorings one for string quartet and another for String Orchestra (BA9584). Three Little Nocturnes was composed by Hans Abrahamsen in 2005. Commissioned by the Cikada Ensemble with support from NOMUS and written for Frode Haltli and the Cikada String Quartet. Programme Note: In the first nocturne a slow falling music emerges on an irregular pulse filled with high harmonics in the strings. The second nocturne is fast and unrestful music with a lot of passion which in a moment runs into a glimpse of a tango. In this movement the accordion is employed in its traditional fashion using the chord bass with its ?oom-pah-pah? standard chords. The third nocturne is again slow indeed very slow and ithas German tempo and expression markings. The piece ends with a lullaby in the accordion played with an unusual technique imitating the string portato. This is accompanied by high harmonics in the strings while the first violin slowly and softly plays a melody from the second nocturne.Hans Abrahamsen

The full score and parts for artist and musician Martin Creed's Variations For String Quartet composed in 2013 for Violin Viola Cello and Double Bass. Martin Creed is perhaps best known for his daring and undoubtedly innovative art pieces the most controversial of which Work No. 227: The lights going on and off won the Turner prize in 2001. Lesser-known but equally as interesting are his musical endeavours playing and composing with his band as well as composing a piece commissioned for the 2012 Olympic Games opening ceremony. This work Variations For String Quartet is an exciting andmulti-layered piece that shows off the best of this artist of many talents.

Composer pianist writer and educator Joaquin Turina was born in Seville in 1882 and was active mainly in Spain until his death in 1949. His work is influenced by traditional Andalusian idioms. The Serenata is no exception. In it Turina employs all his French classical training filtered through Spanish sonorities to make a sophisticated an appealing work of chamber music. Originally Turina had included a part for bass which was lost.

String Quartet No.4 was written for the Camilli Quartet who gave the first performance at the Queen Elizabeth Hall London April 1995. It is dedicated to the memory of Nyman's composition teacher Alan Bush. This quartet is anarrative made up of a chain of twelve complete but often cross-related movements each quite simple in design. For instance the Scottish melody first heard in the second half of I is hinted at in the 2nd violin/viola in thesecond fast section of II and is directly quoted again during III and XII. The theme of the fast section of IV is taken up again in VIII; IX reverts to the mood of the opening of I while the rising scale/syncopated themes of II IX and the bass of X and XII are related. X also reintroduces the slow harmonics theme from VII. XII is (apparently) cast in the form of a baroque French rondeau. The main theme of VI was plucked out of the Quartet and used inmy score for Christopher Hampton’s film Carrington. Duration 40 minutes. A set of parts is available for sale.
