String Quartet No.2 was composed by Hans Abrahamsen in 1981. Programme note: Hans Abrahamsens's second string quartet was commissioned by the Lerchenborg music-week of 1981 during which it was first performed by the Gaudeamus Quartet. In Hans Abrahamsen's second quartet it is the continuous alternation of soberness and drama that first catches the listner's ears: the lyrical/gestural tradition as we know it from Arnold Schoenberg and Alban Berg pitched - not against - but around the 'sober barbarism' which is characteristic of rhytmic neo-classicism. Both the first and the last movement of th is quartet are emotional at manylevels: sad - and still seething with life and always unpredictable in their development it is night twilight and white-hot light. Sparkling diamonds set off by scarlett velvet. The two middle movements link the contrasts without cushioning: the second movement a gruelling stripped rhythmical drill followed by a hushed far-off dance in triple meter which shifts and hesitates all the time though. There is an ambience of the classics glimpsed through many veils. The second quartet is music which is fraught with danger in its ambiguous relation to tradition: the past emerges as a most relevant and living ghost. The Beauty and the Beast as musical drama.

8 Enchanting Pieces from India arranged for String Quartet. Par SHARMA PYARELAL. For the first time The Schott String Quartet Series features a collection of pieces that have been originally composed in a style unique to string quartet arrangements. Internationally-acclaimed Bollywood composer Pyarelal Sharma has provided music and songs for over 450 films. This set of string quartets, composed especially for Schott, is influenced by Indian film music, Indian folk, Arabic and light Indian classical music, thus combining the alluring sound of the East with the stability of a classic Western ensemble.
Another new feature that this volume has brought to the series is a special bonus CD containing performances of these charming pieces by leading members of the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
The Schott String Quartet Series
With the first books in the series focusing on baroque, classical and romantic styles, The Schott String Quartet Series has expanded to cover music ranging from traditional pieces through to Eastern-influenced works. Aside from 'Indian Summer', which features original compositions, each book contains original arrangements of well known themes, which have often never been arranged for string quartet before.
An important characteristic of these arrangements is that they allow all four instruments to demand the attention throughout the music. The pieces are suitable for amateur musicians or school students and are ideal for public performance./ Recueil / Quatuor à Cordes

Par ADES THOMAS. Composed in 1994 and now firmly established as part of the contemporary string quartet repertoire, Arcadiana is one of Thomas Adès’s early masterpieces. Six of its seven movements evoke various vanished or vanishing idylls. The odd-numbered movements are all aquatic. I might be the ballad of some lugubrious gondolier; III takes a title and a figuration from a Schubert Lied; in V a ship is seen swirling away to L’Isle Joyeuse; VII is the River of Oblivion. The second and sixth movements inhabit pastoral Arcadias, respectively: Mozart’s ‘Kingdom of Night’, and more local fields. The joker in this pack is the fourth movement, the literal dead centre: Poussin’s tomb bearing the inscription ‘Even in Arcady am I’. / Ensemble Music / Répertoire / Quatuor à Cordes

Richard Reed Parry's Quartet For Heart And Breath is an innovative and original piece based on the performers' own bodily rhythms. This sheet music is for String Quartet(Violin/Violin/Viola/Cello).Richard Reed Parry is familiar to millions as the lead singer of rock band Arcade Fire yet his foray into classical music is equally worthy of attention. Quartet For Heart AndBreath is an experiment into using the performers' heartbeats and breathing to dictate the tempo. The performers are instructed to wear stethoscopes in order to listen to their heartbeats closely while one completebreath corresponds to one bar and two heartbeats equal two crotchets. The result is a quiet and subtle piece as each instrument has to play softly so as to be able to keep in time. The piece also has a naturally occurringdynamism in that the players' heart rates constantly change as the performance goes on with each instrument falling in and out of sync sometimes culminating in a beautiful moment of all heartbeats matching each other.Interestingly this unique aspect means that no performance will ever be the same meaning to hear or play this composition will be a truly once in a lifetime experience.Quartet For Heart And Breath is asuperbly one-of-a-kind composition by Richard Reed Parry. Commissioned by the Kronos Quartet this piece makes for a wonderfully distinctive performance with fascinating implications for the connection between the musicand the body.

Herbert Howells was an English composer organist and teacher most famous for his large output of Anglican Church music. However for this reason his secular compositions tend to be unreasonably neglected. Thisedition of the Fantasy String Quartet has set out to change this. The delightful piece of chamber music makes full use of the unique characteristics of String instruments giving all four players equal parts andopportunities to shine separately as well as together as an ensemble. Possibly inspired by Vaughan Williams’ Phantasy Quintet the Fantasy String Quartet requires skilful mastery of their instrument from eachplayer. Performance time is ca. 13 minutes.
