This enchanting 12-minute cycle is typical of the subtle and delicate way Maxwell-Davies approaches writing forchildren: straightforward tender affectionate yet with just a hint of the complexity found in challenging 'adult' works like the cycle Westerlings. George Mackay Brown's poetry with its haiku-like short stanzas and pointillisteallusive imagery leaves you constantly intrigued : who is the boy 'lost on the hill till sundown' and why is time 'a bird with white wings?' Is this perhaps the poet himself playing a bit of holiday truant?

First performed on 17 October 2000 at the Pieve dell'Assunta Cavalese Trentino Italy by the Mayfield Singers this is an Italian translation of the text A Hoy Calendar from the poem sequence Fishermen withPloughs. Written for SATBB chorus with optional Piano or Organ accompaniment.

Martyr was commissioned by St Albans Chamber Choir in celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of their founding. It was premiered by the St Albans Chamber Choir and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in St Albans Abbey on 24 January 2009 under the direction of John Gibbons. Martyr was written as a counterpart to Haydn's Missa in Angustiis ('Nelson' Mass) using the same orchestration as Haydn's original version. In venues where an organ is present the optional organ part should always be used. The four SATB solo parts should be performed by a group of singers placed to the side or to the front of the orchestra away from the main chorus.
