Par SCHUMANN ROBERT. Robert Schumann once described his lieder as a ”mirror image of his self”. This applies particularly to his compositions from Heinrich Heine's 'Buch der Lieder”.
What began as a lyrical intermezzo, then developed into 'Dichterliebe”, a work with which Schumann identified the ardour of his love for Clara Wieck.
This work still presents an enigma to performers- how Schumann interpretes Heine's irony in his music is often discussed. But one thing is certain: with 'Dichterliebe” the composer created what is perhaps the best-loved and one of the most tightly-woven lieder cycles of the Romantic period.
This new edition presents the work based on the first edition. It takes Schumann's autograph score into consideration, an autograph score where there have recently been discussions as to whether it should be presented as an independent alternative version. The four lieder omitted by Schumann from the printed edition are included in the appendix.
- High-quality Urtext edition of this well-known song cycle
- Appendix includes four lieder by Schumann which he did not include in the original cycle
- Comprehensive foreword and critical commentary (Ger/Eng)/ Répertoire / Chant et Piano

Clara Schumann's dramatic setting of the poem Lorelei was a birthday gift to her husband Robert in 1843. Her mastery of the keyboard is evident in this exciting and descriptive accompaniment that features driving eighth-note figures reminiscent of Schubert's Erlkönig.

Andrea Ramsey Choral Series-Er Ist Gekommen is one of four songs presented to Robert Schumann by his wife Clara. Er ist gekommen in Sturm und Regen (He came in storm and rain) ihm schlug beklommen mein Herzentgegen. (my anxious heart beat against his.) Wie konnt' ich ahnen daß seine Bahnen (how could I have known that his path) sich einen sollten meinen Wegen. (should unite itself withmine?) This setting for SSA choir with Piano accompaniment is an excellent example of the composer's ingenuity and is a wonderful introduction to Romantic era style and performance practice.

Robert Schumann Liederkreis op. 24 Kazuko Ozawa (Editeur) Edition...(+)

Voix Et Piano

After a long time spent writing only for piano Schumann produced a true outburs...(+)
After a long time spent writing only for piano Schumann produced a true outburst of lieder inspired by the poetry of Heinrich Heine: ?What a blessing it is to write for the voice!? Schumann wrote to his beloved Clara. It is as though a knot was untied while he was writing the Heine-Liederkreis Op.24. Retrospectively Schumann wrote that this new poetic spirit had inspired the composition of lieder to such an extent that it had become the only genre to make significant progress since the time of Beethoven.Indeed these nine songs which represent the only complete setting of the underlying Heine cycle came so close to the spirit of the poet that a new epoch of liedcomposition was founded. This new edition of Schumann?s first collection of lieder is based primarily on the first publication under consideration of the autograph manuscript. All songs in their original keyComprehensive foreword (Eng/Ger) and critical commentary (Ger)Includes an English translation of the lied texts by Richard Stokes (The Book of Lieder) printed separately

Schumann's song cycle 'Frauenliebe und Leben?, on poems by Adelbert von Chamisso, deals with the trauma of a woman who loses the man who was her first love and the guiding light of her life. Schumann himself completed what is perhaps his most unified song cycle in blissful anticipation of his union with Clara Wieck. This new edition presents the work on the basis of the first print, using Schumann's autograph for purposes of consultation. The ups and downs of disappointed love: who could fail to sympathize with the feelings that Schumann immortalized in his song cycle Dichterliebe after Heine? The pieces range from hopeful anticipation(?Im wunderschönen Monat Mai?) to solitary grief (?Und wüssten?s die Blumen die kleinen?) and bitter sarcasm (?Die alten bösen Lieder?). Schumann knew what he was writing about: the cycleoriginated in the year of his marriage to Clara Wieck an event that took place only after years of struggle. Originally the sixteen-piece cycle was meant to include twenty lieder. Our volume reproduces the four discarded numbersin an appendix.

'Yet you a man have sensed in these songs a depth which hardly the most knowing female heart can feel!' Thus an admirer wrote to Robert Schumann concerning his song cycle Frauenliebe Und Leben.Schumann’s empathy with the highly romantic inflections of Adelbert von Chamisso‘s poetry may also have arisen from the circumstances that prompted this cycle for it was written during one of the happiest periods of hislife just before his marriage to Clara Wieck. Ever since its initial publication Frauenliebe Und Leben has been immensely popular with male and female singers alike. Now it appears for the first time in a Henleurtext edition equally well-suited for medium male or female voice (mezzo soprano or baritone).

Brahms's deeply moving Alto Rhapsody is one of the glories of the choral reperto...(+)
Brahms's deeply moving Alto Rhapsody is one of the glories of the choral repertoire. Though it was written as a wedding song for the daughter of his friend Clara Schumann, the work clearly seems a deeply personal one for Brahms. Perhaps, as some have suggested, a melancholy reflection on his own solitary life. This great concert favorite is based on portions of the text of Goethe's Harzreise im Winter (Winter Journey in the Harz Mountains), and set for alto solo, men's chorus, and orchestra. In addition to the Alto Rhapsody, this volume contains three other major Brahms choral works: the Song of Destiny, a setting of a poem by Hölderlin: Nänie, a dirge for Brahms's friend Anselm Feuerbach, set to a text by Schiller: and Song of the Fates, set to passages from Act IV of Goethe's Iphigenie auf Tauris. All four works have been reprinted from the authoritative edition published by Breitkopf and Härtel, Leipzig.

Par BRAHMS JOHANNES. This edition of Brahms' greatest, most ambitious vocal work...(+)
Par BRAHMS JOHANNES. This edition of Brahms' greatest, most ambitious vocal work is reprinted from the definitive edition of the composer's works, prepared by Breitkopf & Härtel of Leipzig. Inexpensive but sturdily constructed to provide years of pleasurable use, this full score combines all the musical parts in a clear, readable format, with wide margins, large noteheads, and many other helpful features. Brahms conducted the first major performance of the German Requiem in Bremen Cathedral in April 1868. The occasion — attended by many distinguished musicians, among them Clara Schumann — provided the 34-year-old composer with his first great public success. Scored for mixed chorus, solo voices, and full orchestra, the Requiem reflects Brahms' virtuosic grasp of nineteenth-century vocal technique as well as the polyphonic vocal traditions of the previous three centuries. Above all, it radiates Brahms' stalwart individuality, technical mastery, and stirring emotional appeal, which were soon to secure his unique position in the musical world. More than a century after its debut, this masterpiece of choral music is one of the most performed and recorded works in the repertoire of religious music. Reprinted in full score, including solo voices, chorus and orchestra, from definitive Breitkopf & Härtel edition. A reproduction of the Breitkopf and Hartel edition. / Musique religieuse / Répertoire / Choeur
