Frauenchor. Par HAYDN FRANZ JOSEF. Haydn presumably wrote his 'Missa brevis” in 1775 for the Brothers Hospitallers of Eisenstadt Abbey. The work takes its nickname, the 'Little Organ Mass', from the organ solo in the 'Benedictus”. This arrangement for female choir (SMezAA) is based on the complete edition of the 'Works of Joseph Haydn”.
The original soprano and alto parts have, for the most part, been taken over, as has the soprano solo in the 'Benedictus”. The tenor and bass parts are distributed among the mezzo-sopranos and altos, with a few well thought-out alterations to preserve the harmonic structure. Heribert Breuer has retained the original substance with great skill while giving the work a wholly new and attractive sound.
Heribert Breuer was professor of choral conducting and music theory at Berlin University of the Arts until 2010. He is the founder and conductor of the Berlin Bach Academy.
- Arrangement for SMezAA based on the Henle Complete Edition of the Works of 'Joseph Haydn”

The Seven Last Words of Christ Hob. XX/1B-When Haydn stopped in Passau on his second journey to England he heard a vocal version of his own orchestral work The Seven Last Words. It had been made by the Kapellmeister at Passau cathedral Joseph Friebert and Haydnwas quite impressed except: 'I believe I could have done the voice parts better'. He acquired a copy and set about making his own vocal version taking over most of the text. Haydn particularly liked his own vocal work and itwas also enthusiastically received by his contemporaries. The study edition is based on the volume (HN 5822) published as part of the Complete Edition by the Joseph Haydn Institute in Cologne.

“Missa brevis in F in score. This was the first Mass which Mr. Haydn composed whilst still a student” says an entry in the catalogue of Haydn’s musical estate. Circa 1798/99 Haydn entered the work without an incipit in his working catalogue as “Missa brevis in F. / a due Soprani”. Around 1805/06 he added in shaky decrepit handwriting to the title “Missa.” on the front page of the organ part of one of the set of parts prepared by his copyist Johann Elßler: “Brevis / di me Giuseppe Haydn mpria / 1749”. This date the earliest yet found on a work by Haydn corresponds to the title of the Haydn catalogue whichindicates the eighteenth year of Haydn’s life i. e. 1749/50 as the starting point of his work: “Catalogue of all those compositions which I happen to remember writing from my 18th to my 73rd year of life.” In 1805 Haydn set about adding further instruments to the original scoring for two violins and figured organ bass and by 15th February 1806 the larger instrumentation was ready as is evidenced by a letter written on this very day by the Haydn biographer Georg August Griesinger. It is however by no means certain whether the seventy-three-year-old undertook this adaptation himself. - Urtext from Joseph Haydn Werke - Full score parts (BA4644) and vocal score (BA4644-90) available for sale - Early string version and later version with wind instruments and timpani

It is known that a new Haydn mass was performed before a packed congregation in the Piaristenkirche in Vienna on St. Stephen?s Day (26 December) 1796. St. Bernard?s name day falls on the 11th of September (a Saturday in 1797) and it is generally thought that Haydn combined doing honour to the Capuchin monk with the production of a new Mass for his patron the day thereafter.Apparently later performances in Eisenstadt added horns to double the trumpets in the tuttis and just as in the previous Mass the clarinet parts were enlarged; it is almost certain that the new clarinet parts are either by Haydn or (shall we say) ?supervised? by him. As inthe Mass in Time of War conductors have the choice of two orchestrations: with or without doubling horns and with or without the supplementary clarinet parts. The Heiligmesse has always been one of Haydn?s most admired works. Haydn's fame in England had been well founded durng his first visit in 1791/1792 and now at the height of his celebrity he was warmly welcomed on all sides. Par HAYDN FRANZ JOSEF. Following his ' Jugendmesse ” from 1749, church music played only a secondary role in Haydn's creative output. It was not until 1766 with the ' Cäcilienmesse ” and again in 1768-69 with the 'Great Organ Mass”, that Haydn returned to this genre of composition. This Mass in E-flat major belongs to the same period as the 'Sturm-und- Drang ” symphonies.
Some of the remarkable features of this period are reflected here in the expansion of expression combined with a new very original musical language. The score also contains the traditional Viennese trumpet and timpani parts although it is extremely unlikely that they stem from Haydn. As Haydn at least tolerated these parts, the performance material contains both the original as well as the expanded versions./ Répertoire / Solistes (SATB), Choeur Mixte (SATB) et Orchestre

Horn, Paul (Arr.) - Mh 837. Par HAYDN JOHANN MICHAEL. The Missa sub titulo Sti. Leopoldi pro festo Innocentium MH 837, written for the choir boys of the Salzburg Cathedral, was the last completed work of Johann Michael Haydn. Haydn composed more than thirty works to Latin and German settings for his “beloved choir boys” in a scoring for two or three treble voices. The composition of the Leopoldi-Mass was completed on 22 December 1805 and it “corresponds entirely to the strength of the hopeful pupils. ” On New Year’s Eve in 1805 Haydn, who had long been sick and who suffered under the consequences of the invasion of the French, wrote to his friend Father Weringand Rettensteiner: “in spite of all the tragic circumstances, I still wrote aMass for the children’s festival, and I think they enjoyed it. ” / Messe / Répertoire / Solistes SSA, Choeur SSA, 2 ViolonS Basse Continue

Tonalité : C-Dur - Mh 182. Par HAYDN JOHANN MICHAEL. Haydn’s Missa Sancti Joannis Nepomuceni, dated 21 May 1772, is dedicated to the Bohemian martyr and patron “Saint of bridges, ” Johannes Nepomuk [ca. 1340–1393, canonized in 1729]. Despite the addition of woodwinds and brass to the three-part string section, the Mass is in a comparatively simple, compact form as was expressly required by Count Hieronymus Colloredo, Haydn’s second employer in Salzburg. Even in the final sections of the Gloria and Credo Haydn forgoes not only vocal virtuosity, but also the polyphonic artifices which traditionally characterize these passages in the Mass. Like the Missa Sancti Amandi [1776], the Nepomuk Mass does not employ vocal soloists. / Messe / Répertoire / Choeur SATB, 2 Hautbois, 2 Clarinettes, 2 Trompett

Chiemsee-Messe. Par HAYDN JOHANN MICHAEL. Among Haydn’s over thirty settings of the Latin Ordinary, the Missa in honorem Sanctae Ursula occupies an outstanding position, which, according to the autograph, was completed on 5 August 1793. This Mass has been referred to as the most “Mozartian” of all his masses. With its song-like melodic character, the unity of the motivic material and the harmonius balance between festive and reflective sections this Mass is one of Haydn’s most successful and inspired works. This work, which in addition to the usual Salzburg “church trio” includes two trumpets and timpani, belongs to the category of “Missa solemnis. ” The popular nickname Chiemsee-Messe is bound up with the history ofthe origins of the work. Haydn wrote the Mass for the musically gifted nun, Sebastiana Oswald, who belonged to the Benedictine cloister of Frauenchiemsee. This work soon found widespread acceptance beyond the originally intended sphere of its origins, as is indicated by the numerous copies found in Austrian convents. / Messe / Répertoire / Solistes SATB, Choeur SATB, 2 Clarinettes, Timbale
