Kammeroper Nr. 2. Par RIHM WOLFGANG. Chamber opera does not mean “little opera.” On the same scale as chamber music is to the symphony, it is rather the other way of talking onstage. The movable apparatus permits sophisticated voice-leading. A large ensemble demands simple conception to achieve the complexity it perhaps intends; this can be formulated more sharply and nuanced in a chamber ensemble. Therefore it is the subject which this type of presentation must sustain – or, better, provoke.
Büchner’s Lenz
is a description of the conditions within a process of collapse, moments of destruction already occurred but not yet accepted, evident in the points of contact with the environment. And it was those points of contact which Michael Fröhling attempted to reconstruct onstage. Lenz’s distraught state is always the same; only the proximity of the environment to that distraught state grows and ebbs.
The musical consequence
An hour of extreme chamber music results from this description: always bound for the main character – actually, not a commentary, but the main character himself as a multilayered level of action. Although Lenz acts on many levels – or tries to or believes he is – he has no room to manoeuvre. That is why he is also tightly interwoven in his sonic surroundings; the voices which only he hears are just as much himself as the two men with whom he foregathers (the liberal pragmatist Oberlin and the alert merchant who always “does the right thing” in every situation) – they evoke responses which he deeply desires. Omnipresent Friederike is just as much his inner world as Nature is – Nature, which he can no longer perceive unless it is personified, enlivened or dead.
Therefore, the music’s task is both to motivate the “situation” (atmospherically) and to be the psychological constant (via a network of entangled references per se) in an action as it is played out.
The compositional process
December 1977 to June 1978 – a period identical to the stepwise understanding of an existence as that of Jakob Lenz. Yet the more the historical figure became precisely attendant in my intellect in terms of data and atmosphere, the more it retreated in favour of a cipher of disturbance as I began to understand Lenz.
Thence the explanation for the failure of the attempts to approach him – including my attempt to interpret him via musical representation – because, essentially, Lenz himself is the failure. Only the naked stages of that failure remain portrayable, i.e. including the failure of those who wish to “help” Lenz, for example, while Lenz himself is already trapped inextricably in a state of complete destruction. I tried to compose my way into that situation as far as possible; the insistence of several rhythmic and harmonic configurations is the palpable expression of the main character’s ever-recurring rigidity. One sound pervades the entire work.
The musical stage
For me, this is a place where very magical and very human things take place. In Jakob Lenz, the human aspects often switch to magical ones, since the realism of a self-suasive, unhinged soul takes on surreal traits – or we simply cannot understand that otherwise except as not being real. A character like Jakob Lenz on the stage is complex due to the fact alone that it harbours many stages within itself, and music must represent those constantly present stages.
I have tried to do so in the most direct way – by not cleanly separating the musical layers, but keeping them constantly in evidence until they must break forth, each in accord with its own dramaturgy. In an overview, the large form takes on aspects of a rondo, performed in overlapping layers – a type of rondo relief, since perspectives of psychological proximity and distance are indeed formulated musically as atmospheric relations.
Above all: the thread on which Jakob Lenz hangs is the current onto the listeners’ hearts.

Par LEVINAS MICHAEL. Le 'O' du Haut est une commande des Neue Vocal Solisten de Stuttgart.
Il s'agit de deux madrigaux dans lesquels je fais chanter deux poésies du poète roumain Gerashim Luca, 'le Triple' et 'Ma déraison d'être', poèmes tirés du recueil héros-limite publié chez Corti.
Ces madrigaux sont écrits pour un ensemble vocal mixte: trois voix de femmes (deux sopranos et une mezzo-soprano) et trois voix d'hommes, un haute-contre, un baryton et une basse.
La conception du 'O' du Haut est contemporaine du travail effectué pour Les trois Chansons pour la loterie Pierrot et Jean la Grêle sur les textes de Novarina.
Les préoccupations musicales et les modes d'écritures sont très proches et ces deux oeuvres ont été données ensemble lors d'un concert à l'abbaye de Royaumont en septembre 2008.
Gerashim Luca est un poète issu du courant lettriste. Il s'en est distancié en utilisant des structures grammaticales qui constituent la phrase et ses poème font souvent référence à une forme de versification avec des enjambements complexes et retors. Il revient parfois à des formes très repérable comme le rondo notamment.
Mais l'origine lettriste de Luca lui ouvre un champ sonore particulier qui ne peut que fasciner le musicien.
Les mots, leurs assemblages, la structure linguistique et sémiotique de la phrase jouent sur la perception lettriste de la langue française. J'ai retrouvé dans ces poèmes cette ambivalence si riche entre 'le son et le sens': le 'O du Haut' ou bien encore 'le N de la Haine'.
Il y a aussi dans la poétique de Luca et son jeu entre le son et le sens une alchimie entre les mots, les multiples variantes de la prononciation d'une voyelle en français (par exemple, la prononciation différente de la voyelle O dans les mots suivants: viOle, viOlon) la redécouverte de ce que j'appelle: les retournements du merveilleux verlainien.
J'ai retrouvé, en mettant en musique ces poèmes, le style madrigaliste. Il s'agit, encore davantage que dans Les trois chansons pour la Loterie Pierrot de véritables grilles harmoniques qui s'altèrent et dérivent lentement et d'intervalles faussement parallèles entre les voix car issus en fait d'échanges contrapuntiques.
Il y a aussi chez Gerashim Luca des périodes qui ne font pas seulement références au rondo. On peut y entendre aussi le souvenir le souvenir de sa tradition ancestrale: les acclamations très particulières du rite religieux des offices de la tradition juive d'Europe Centrale (les larmes chantantes de l'officiant et le passage alterné du murmure et du cri des acclamations - commentaires de l'assemblée)
L'OFFICIANT: le désespoir
L'ASSEMBLEE: le désespoir a deux paires de jambes, trois paires de jambes, quatre paires de jambes...
La mise en musique de ce poème s'impose alors pour moi ! Il serait trop réducteur de ramener ces forces poétiques de Luca aux seuls décryptage lacanien de l'inconscient des signifiant du son des mots, même si la conclusion du poème chante: le désespoir n'a pas de PAIRES... de jambes.
La souplesse unique de la langue française créée toujours ces structures rythmiques complexes que j'appelle des 'lettres accents'. Ces 'lettres-accents' se dégagent par l'écoute lettriste du mot et de la phrase d'un sens trop réducteur. Alors naît la mélodie et la polyphonie madrigaliste. Se dégage aussi ces structures linguistiques et musicales purement abstraites, une poétique des proportions froides et pures.

John Corigliano (b. 1938) is an American composer. The Poem In October was commissioned by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and first performed in 1970. Taking its text from a 1944 work by the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas it was later arranged for chamber orchestra by the composer as part of his Dylan Thomas Trilogy. It is cast in Rondo form with instrumental interludes interweaved with the vocal verses. Le volume II contient 26 morceaux en tout dont 19 sont rassembl?s dans quatre opus de trois quatre et six morceauxs?par?s: Trois Marches militaires Quatre L?ndler ainsi que six Grandes Marches et Trios et autant de Polonaises. Ces ?uvres datent des ann?es 1818 ? 1826. La pi?ce la plus connue de ce volume est sans doute la sonate en Ut majeur D 812 ?galement connue sous le titre de Grand Duo et compos?e en 1824. Cependant sans vouloir rel?guer les autres ?uvres au second plan les sept marches sont elles aussi des ?uvres somptueuses.
