Max Steiner was born in
Vienna in 1888, and grew
up surrounded by music.
He was a student of the
Imperial Academy of
Music, having among his
teachers Gustav Mahler.
In 1936 he signed an
agreement with Warner.
Steiner, considered the
father of symphonic music
in Hollywood style. One
of his most famous and
popular masterworks is,
without any doubt, Gone
with the Wind (1939). The
movie was an immediate
success and won ten
Academy Awards. In spite
of the years passed, this
movie still moves young
audiences around the
world. Lorenzo Bocci has
chosen the song Tara?s
Theme from this movie and
turned the romantic music
into an arrangement for
concert band.
Vom Winde verweht ist
einer der Filme, der
heute noch Generationen
vor dem Fernseher
vereint. Oft gezeigt,
wird jeder doch immer
wieder mitgerissen von
der tragischen
Liebesgeschichte inmitten
der Kriegswirren. Einen
nicht unwichtigen Anteil
an der bewegenden
Atmosphäre des
Filmklassikers hat die
großartige Musik von Max
Steiner, der als Urvater
der sinfonischen
Filmmusik im
Hollywoodstil gilt und
neben Vom Winde verweht
noch zahlreiche weitere
erfolgreiche Filme
vertonte. Lorenzo Bocci
wählte aus der Musik
Tara's Theme und
bearbeitete die
romantische Musik zu
einem Arrangement für
Blasorchester.

ihr Lebensinhalt gewesen
zu sein: geniale Manner -
mit und ohne Trauschein.
Sie selbst liess gern
durchblicken, wie lang
ihre private
Eroberungsliste war ...
Alma ist und bleibt ein
Unikum der
Kulturgeschichte, doch
aufgrund ihres Rufes als
,,Femme fatale und ihres
extravaganten Wesens wird
leider allzu oft ausser
Acht gelassen, dass sie
selbst wunderbare
Kompositionen
hervorgebracht hat, sehr
gebildet war und die Gabe
besass, nicht nur Manner
zu verzaubern. In einer
Zeit, wo Frauen noch
keineswegs
gleichberechtigt waren,
lebte Alma nach dem
Motto: ,,Jeder Mensch
kann alles - aber er muss
auch zu allem bereit
sein. Bei der Komposition
der Alma Phantasien habe
ich mich von der
bemerkenswerten Alma
inspirieren lassen, mein
Ohr in deren Zeit
versetzt und das Gehorte
in ihre eigene Tonsprache
ubersetzt. Dabei habe ich
in meine Kompositionen
zwei kurze musikalische
Zitate aus Alma Mahlers
Werken eingeflochten,
namlich aus Die stille
Stadt und Ich wandle
unter Blumen . Der Text
stammt aus Alma Mahlers
Tagebucheintragungen und
handelt von zwei Mannern,
die Alma Mahlers Leben
pragten: Alexander
Zemlinsky und Gustav
Mahler. Die Schreibweise
Almas wurde dabei
beibehalten. (Manuela

This new
original composition by
the Japanese composer
Itaru Sakai for ten-part
brass ensemble is
characterised by two main
ideas: a fanfare section,
deriving from a literal
quotation from the
opening of Mahlerâ??s
fifth symphony, and a
contrasting,wandering
theme thatâ??s rather
melancholy.
A
BOUNDARY ISLAND is
geschreven voor het Brass
Ensemble Rose en het
RivST Brass Quintet. De
première vond op 13
april 2010 plaats in de
Rose Hall in het Japanse
Toyonaka Osaka, tijdens
een concert waarin beide
blazersensemblesoptraden.
De componistwilde met dit
werk het karakter van de
muziek als universele
taal uitdrukken - een
taal waarin mensen uit
alle delen van de wereld
met elkaar kunnen
communiceren. Aan het
begin van de compositie
worden tweethemaâ??s ge
ntroduceerd: het eerste,
in fanfareachtige stijl,
is ge nspireerd op een
citaat uit de opening van
Mahlers vijfde symfonie.
Het staat in contrast met
het tweede, eerder
melancholische thema.Het
levendige hoofddeel
heeftzijn eigen krachtige
thema, maar grijpt ook
terug op de twee
openingsthemaâ??s, die
daarbij in een nieuw
jasje worden gestoken. Na
een korte terugkeer naar
het langzamere tempo van
de inleiding wordt het
werk met eenvlotter
gedeelteafgesloten. Die Hoffnung, dass in
der gemeinsamen Sprache
der Musik alle Menschen
miteinander sprechen
können, ist das
zentrale Thema von A
BOUNDARY ISLAND.
Zu
Beginn des Stückes
werden zwei Themen
vorgestellt: Das erste,
fanfarenartige Thema, das
aus einem Zitat vom
Beginn von Mahlers
SINFONIE NR. 5 entwickelt
wurde, steht im Kontrast
zum zweiten, eher
melancholischen Thema.
Der bewegte
Hauptteilpräsentiert
ein eigenes, kraftvolles
Hauptthema, bezieht aber
auch beide
Einleitungsthemen wieder
mit ein und rückt
diese teilweise in ein
neues Licht. Nach einem
kurzen Einschub im
langsamen Eingangstempo
folgt ein stretta-artiger
Schluss.

attention. The Heavenly
Life, a humoresque
composed in 1892 for
soprano and piano, which
he already wanted to use
in the final movement of
the Third Symphony under
the title What the Child
Tells Me, ultimately
became the nucleus and
final movement of the
Fourth. Even after
publication in 1901,
Mahler kept repeatedly
refining the
orchestration. His maxim
not without my retouching
led to a whole series of
revised reprints. It is
probably no coincidence
that Mahler performed
especially the Fourth
Symphony in his last two
New York concerts in
February 1911, using this
opportunity to review
once again the score and
parts. This performance
material with his
retouching served as the
main source for the new
edition. Furthermore,
included for the first
time were corrections and
annotations in
conjunction with
performances of the
Fourth, which Mahler
entered into the scores
of conductors such as
Mengelberg and

movements) was first
performed in Budapest in
1889, but the premiere as
well as two further
performances in Hamburg
and Weimar turned out to
be a fiasco. After 1894
Mahler removed the
Blumine-movement. Until
the last performance
under his direction in
New York in 1909, Mahler
made revisions again and
again. This edition
