Music and texts of 201 carols for the Christmas season (many in more than one setting) each with copious notes on historical background and performance. An extensive general introduction gives an overview of the history of the carol and there are a number of appendices dealing with specific areas of the repertory. The book's approach is an attempt to rediscover the native vitality of material that has sometimes been debased and sentimentalized by means of `authentic' period settings and a concern for historically informed performance. Mostly SATB accompanied and unaccompaniedEasy to Moderately difficult'simply magnificent ' - TheTimes (London).

Score Chorale SATB [Vocal Score] Boosey and Hawkes

This anthem was composed for the service of thanksgiving for a Civil Partnership in June 2011. In looking for a suitable text the composer turned to Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806–61) one of whose sonnets he had used for another wedding anthem (Love is beautiful indeed) a few years earlier. As the title suggests this highly expressive text puts into words the intense feeling of love and the mostly homophonic music reflects that through luscious harmonies and beautifully shaped phrases. Suitable for intermediate choirs this setting of a popular wedding text is a joy for both performers and audience.

No. 4 from The Same Flame-Commissioned by the Somerset England based charity Churchill Music! The Same Flame was inspired by Pierre de Coubertin’s ideals of Olympism which gave rise to the modern Olympic and Paralympic values: Respect Excellence Friendship Courage Equality Determination and Inspiration. These seven values are celebrated in five movements so four of them had to double up – Friendship with Equality and Courage with Determination. Each movement is scored for slightly different choral forces so the work is varied. Also individual movements may suit different choirs giving the opportunity for individual performance or collaboration between choirs. All fivemovements of The Same Flame are published as individual octavos. A complete vocal score is available on request from the publishers.Ideal for younger choirs due to its approachability voicing and focus on friendship All-weather friends is mostly in unison with some optional and approachable divisi. This heart-warming movement also introduces words from other countries and cultures that mean ‘friend’: Japanese Georgian Turkish Swahili and others.

Walter Piston is better known for his symphonic and larger scale orchestral compositions mostly of a secular nature. In fact this is his only religious composition. It was premiered it at Brandeis University on May 9 1959. The joyful and sprightly musical content of the first part is expressed with shifting accents modal chanting and exquisite orchestration. The prayer that follows is substantially darker and more troubled though Piston’s skill is to present glimpses of light and relief. This SATB version includes a rehearsal Piano reduction by the composer.

Commissioned by The Manchester Grammar School to celebrate its quincentenary in 2015. First performed on 16 April 2015 at the Bridgewater Hall Manchester by The Manchester Grammar School Choir Hallé Youth Choir and Hallé Orchestra conducted by Mark Elder. Composer’s Note: 'A Celestial Map of the Sky commissioned by The Manchester Grammar School on the occasion of its quincentenary takes its cue from two woodcuts engraved by the German polymath Albrecht Dürer in 1515 the same year in which school was founded. These two groundbreaking polar projections of the northern and southern celestial hemispheres are the oldest printedEuropean star charts. Whereas prior celestial projections sometimes depicted allegorical figures looking over the skies Dürer instead honoured four ancient astronomers by depicting them at their work overseeing his maps. The various texts I have chosen (mostly extractions from larger works) reflect the changing worldview hinted at in Dürer’s charts. His inclusion of the four astronomers was a signal that the universe could be comprehended through human intervention rather than solely through spiritual or symbolic means.' - Tarik O’Regan

Composer David Brunner has a gift for setting texts in melodic phrases with gentle contours and with a lyrical style. He has done exactly that with this text by Victorian age poet and essayist Bessie Rayner Parkes. Parkes was a prominent English feminist and campaigner for women's rights who found music everywhere - in birds, flowers, winds and waves - but mostly in earnest human voices raised in charity and for the cause of truth. What a wonderful message for your singers to convey to their audience! / Choeur Mixte (SATB) Et Piano

In this small-scale song cycle Taverner coloured his melodic Soprano lines with Eastern European and Slavic flavour. At some points the composer interplayed the Piano line with the sung melody and at other times used the Pianoas drone and allows the Vocal line to soar above. The ‘love’ of the title is according to the composer ‘the notion of Eros raised to the divine ’ and the texts are written mostly by monks.John Tavener was that rare creature acomposer of serious music and serious religious music who has also achieved commercial success. He burst into the popular consciousness with the performance of his Song for Athene at the funeral of Princess Diana but had been ahighly respected and frequently-performed composer since the premiere of his dramatic cantata The Whale in 1968.

(HUMMEL BERTOLD) Baryton et Quatuor à Cordes [Conducteur et Parties séparées] Schott
Par HUMMEL BERTOLD. With the Eight Fragments Bertold Hummel has successfully cre...(+)
Par HUMMEL BERTOLD. With the Eight Fragments Bertold Hummel has successfully created a most impressive work. Uncommonly concentrated in the evoking of atmosphere and reflecting the texts strongly, these 'dark grey songs' - to quote Ludwig Hirsch - develop a sadly expressive, almost somnambulant charm. These songs seem to have become Bertold Hummel's completely inwardly turned 'Winterreise', the epigram of a psychosis, full of concealed suggestion and dark references, but always more full of hope. The 'sun' becomes the constantly invoked bearer of hope.
The music is highly expressive, exploiting the various performing and bowing possibilities of the stringed instruments and their capacity for nuances to the limits; occasionally oppressive visions in sound appear. It is music in danger, of a most fragile balance. Nor are subtle musical references missing. With only one note, following the word 'music', harmony and tonality are conjured up. / Date parution : 2007-11-20/ Répertoire / Baryton et Quatuor à Cordes
