Ivor Gurney doubly gifted as both poet and composer was born in 1890. The wonderful song cycle presented here was inspired by Gurney's discovery of William Bliss Carmen's poems in 1919. Carmen's poems were imaginative reconstructions of the surviving fragments of the nine volumes written by Sappho who was born in 612BC. Sappho is said to have been the leader of a band of maidens who worshipped Aphrodite Goddess of Love. Sappho's affections seem to have been directed exclusively at women and the sensuously erotic fragments that have come down through millennia to us tell of one of Sappho's passionate love affairs. This wonderful song cycle full of beauty andemotion transports us back to the isle of Lesbos and with words of great tenderness and beauty tells the story of a heady passionate all-consuming love that is so strong the pain of parting becomes overwhelming and almost too much to endure.

Viola da Gamba Part for Nico Muhly's Malmesbury Motets.   Commissioned for the choir of Malmesbury Abbey Wiltshire by Revd Canon Neill Archer (vicar) and Dr Annie Davis (Lay Precentor). Four poems sharing a common motif of 'Night' provide the texts for my choral cycle Nocturnes, the American Choral Directors Association's commissioned work for its 2005 national convention. For Rilke's atmospheric ?Sa nuit d'ete,? several melodic themes are supported by dense, colorful harmonies in both the choral and piano parts, leading to a climactic section where all are combined and stated simultaneously. Neruda's ?Soneto de la Noche,? from his Cien Sonetos de Amor, speaks of an eternal love that transcends death while reaffirming life. My a cappella setting of this gorgeous poem is predominantly quiet, serene and folk-like, utilizing direct harmonies accompanying long, lyrical vocal lines. Agee's wondrous ?Sure on this Shining Night? is set much like a song from the American musical theater, a genre for which I have held a life-long esteem. Rilke's poignant ?Voici le soir? recalls the opening bell sounds and jazz-tinged chords of the first movement and serves as an epilogue, quietly concluding this cycle of night songs as darkness descends.

Commande de l'IMEC et de l'Abbaye de Royaumont, ces trois chansons qui mettent en musique des textes de Valère Novarina ont été écrites pour l'ensemble vocal De Caelis (cinq voix de femmes spécialisées dans l'interprétation de la musique médiévale). Ces trois chansons ont été crées en mai 2008 à Caen, à l'Abbaye d'Ardenne. Les choix qui ont guidé l'écriture de cette pièce sont liés à des préoccupations concernant, non seulement la relation texte-musique, la structure littéraire d'un texte et la forme musicale. Ces préoccupations portent sur une problématique très circonscrite: décrypter un lien plus originaire entre des structures linguistiques et sémiotiques d'une phrase et celles qui génèrent ce que j'entends par le terme: phrase musicale. Dans Trois Chansons pour la Loterie Pierrot et Jean la Grêle, tout comme dans Le 'O' du Haut, le travail de composition se fonde sur cette relation complexe qui se noue entre 'le son et le sens'. Il en résulte une écriture polyphonique, basée sur l'Arsis et Thésis de la phrase musicale soulignée par des processus harmoniques, une organisation de l'accentuation et du rythme basé, à la fois sur la tension-détente harmonique, l'évolution des échelles et la prosodie si souple d'une langue française pour laquelle j'exige l'exactitude d'une prononciation populaire, telle que j'ai pu l'entendre dans mon enfance chez les 'gens de la campagne'... (la deuxième chanson en particulier La loterie Pierrot...) La chair de l'Homme de Valère Novarina, livre puissamment original, à la fois prose, poésie et théâtre virtuel correspondait exactement à mes attentes et aux orientations de mon écriture. Les cinq chanteuses de l'ensemble De Caelis, placées en pentagone sur la scène, s'interpellent... Elles fragmentent dans l'espace les noms propres, les mots, les formes grammaticales de la langue de Novarina. Les voyelles opèrent des cycles giratoires dans l'espace. Elles passent ainsi d'une voix à l'autre, faisant évoluer par ce déplacement dans l'espace les hauteurs chantées, comme un effet doppler. Il ne faut pas se méprendre sur l'apparente simplicité grammaticale des textes que j'ai choisi dans La Chair de l'Homme de Novarina: le sujet, le verbe et le complément d'objet direct. Cette apparente simplicité grammaticale, sans cesse réitérée, révèle pour moi l'essence de la phrase musicale et une forme qui s'inspire de ce théâtre virtuel de Novarina et sa quête métaphysique. Ce livre de Novarina est aussi une allégorie de la temporalité de ses pièces et des personnages de son théâtre. Jean la Grèle et la multitude des autres noms morts ou vivants apparaissent, sortent de leurs mondes modestes, leurs tombes. Ils participent à une fête foraine onirique, puis la 'loterie Pierrot qui s'arrête (doucement...) sur le huit'. Le prologue à la deuxième chanson, consiste à réveiller les morts par une longue énumération liturgique des noms. Novarina consacre plusieurs pages de La chair de l'Homme à cette énumération des noms. La dernière des trois chansons est consacrée au nom presque imprononçable de 'Deus'. As a work of historic interest of the period The March of the Women is an essential work.British composer Ethel Smyth was a prolific important composer of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1910 she joined the Women’sSocial and Political Union for whom she wrote this anthem. It was taken up and sung everywhere including Holloway Prison where Smyth and other suffragettes had been imprisoned for breaking windows and other acts of politicaldisorder. When Sir Thomas Beecham visited her there he found the women marching around the inner yard and singing while Smyth directed the impromptu Chorus with her toothbrush.

Charlotte Bray's On The Green was comissioned in 2013 by the Royal Philharmonic Society and Britten-Pears Foundation to celebrate the centenary of the birth of the composer Benjamin Britten and the bicentenary of the Royal Philharmonic Society.The piece was first performed as part of the Aldeburgh Festival on 9 June 2013 at Orford Church Suffolk by the New London Children’s Choir directed by Ronald Corp.Scored for SSA with Piano accompaniment On The Green incorporates words by the English romantic poet William Blake.

Tito Manlio was performed for the fi rst time in Mantua as second work of the Carnival season of winter 1719. Vivaldi set the libretto of La fi da ninfa, a dramma per musica in three acts by Scipione Maffei, with a view to its use for the inauguration of the new theatre of the Accademia Filarmonica of Verona, which took place on 6 January 1732, during the Carnival season, elaborate stage sets being provided by Francesco Bibbiena. The critical edition is based on the collation of the two complete manuscripts of the work kept at the National University Library of Turin: the Vivaldi's autograph and a copy realized by fi ve copyists under the direct control of the composer. / Voix Et Piano
