Fassung Ii. Par BACH JOHANN SEBASTIAN. The St. John Passion ranks alongside the St. Matthew Passion, the Christmas Oratorio, the Magnificat and the B minor Mass as one of the great vocal works from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Leipzig years. In contrast to his other large-scale choral works, however, Bach never gave this work a definitive final form. Rather, for every performance he substantially revised the general concept of the piece and also changed numerous details. All previous editions of the St. John Passion have combined readings from various layers of sources and thus present the work in a form which was never heard during Bach’s lifetime. Consequently, the wish often expressed by conductors to perform anauthentic version by Bach could not be easily achieved. The present critical, new edition of the St. John Passion fulfills this wish and for the first time makes available the complete music of the second version of the work as it was performed under Bach’s direction in 1725. Since a number of movements were replaced by others, including the opening chorus, this version differs most dramatically from the “standard” version which is well known today. / Date parution : 2005-12-01/ Répertoire / Solistes SATBB, Choeur SATB, 2 Flûtes Traversières

SEBASTIAN) Voix seule [Partition] Peters
Par FAGERLUND SEBASTIAN. Based on the film by Ingmar Bergman, Sebastian Fagerlun...(+)
Par FAGERLUND SEBASTIAN. Based on the film by Ingmar Bergman, Sebastian Fagerlund’s Autumn Sonata follows Charlotte Andergast, a celebrated concert pianist, as she visits the country home of her adult daughter, Eva. Charlotte has not seen Eva for seven years, during which time Eva and her husband Viktor have lost their three-year-old son Erik. Eva’s sister, Helena (Charlotte’s daughter), had been held in an institution but now (unbeknownst to Charlotte) lives with Eva and Viktor. Charlotte brings with her her need for adulation, imagining the chorus as an admiring concert audience applauding her every decision. When the family members converge under one roof after years of separation, they begin to delve into the past and old wounds?despite their good intentions?are reopened.
Autumn Sonata was commissioned by the Finnish National Opera and premiered in Helsinki on 8 September 2017 with the Finnish National Opera Orchestra and Chorus conducted by John Storgårds. The direction and set design was made by Stéphane Braunschweig and the premiere cast included Anne Sofie von Otter, Erika Sunnegårdh, Helena Juntunen, Tommi Hakala and Nicholas Söderlund. / Instrumental Music / Répertoire / Voix

These settings were written to a commission from the Southern Cathedrals Festival and first performed in Salisbury Cathedral on 24 July 1976 by choirs of Salisbury Winchester and Chichester Cathedrals with the Phillip Jones BrassEnsemble conducted by Richard Seal.Pied BeautyThe rhythmic elasticity and freedom of the poem matches the vividness of its images and the freshness of the poetic language: it is like light playing on water. In thissetting for choir and brass phrases for trumpets and then voices- ‘Glory to be God’- Alternate with more meditative moments- ‘who knows how?’. The contrast of the poem- ‘swift slow sweet sour- a dazzle dim‘ quick changes fromsunshine to shadow- are mirrored in the music.Heaven HavenThe stillness and serenity of this poem one of Hopkins’ earliest is in direct contrast to the other. ‘Out of the swing of the sea’ to a gently rockingfigure runs as a sort of undercurrent through the piece. At the end this figure combines with a motive in thirds (heard quietly on the trumpets at the opening) and expands slowly with the choir in eight parts before dying awayinto silence.

John Tavener's The Martydom Of Saint Stephen for Solo Horn Double SATB Choir and Organ. Commissioned by the Metropolitan and Cathedral Chapter of St. Stephen’s Cathedral Vienna. First performed on 16thMarch 2015 at St Stephen’s Cathedral Vienna by the Cathedral Choir conducted by Markus Landerer. Vienna's iconic gothic cathedral is dedicated to the first Christian martyr and the Metropolitan and Chapter chosewith discrimination and imagination when they asked John Tavener to write this work setting the account of the stoning of St Stephen from the Acts of the Apostles. The choral writing is far from difficult and rich double-choireffects from staggered entries singing the same music creates an impressive sense of the numinous. Tavener fans will not be surprised that the composer suggests that extra male voices might be required. The virtuoso horn part marked 'ferocious - wild and violent' is directed to be played from a gallery and suggests the hail of stones and hatred directed at the saint. The organ mostly offers brief interjections and chordal support until the last 18bars a lullaby(?) for the saint who 'fell asleep in the Lord' as he was being stoned. John himself went to his final sleep not long after composing this majestic work: Eternal memory! - Organists' Review

Nova Genitura was composed by Per Nørgård in 1975. Scored for Soprano and Violin Recorder Gamba Lute and Harpsichord. Programme note: A universe of Marian gentleness heavenly beauty and redeeming joy typifies the vocal works of Per Nørgårds in the 1970s for example Nova Genitura for soprano and baroque ensemble. The composer writes: 'The concept of Mary has a depth that transcends all religious persuasions. All over the earth symbols of the gentle and maternal are known. But the word 'Maria' is also associated - in sound - with the Latin word for the sea mare and she thus becomes the Star of the Sea Maris stella. Their simplicity makes it possible to grasp the music's often complex interweaving of concurrent melodies and tempo layers.' 'Nova Genitura was composed directly in the context of the ending of the Third Symphony in 1975; it also incorporates melodic and harmonic themes from the symphony (the 'Maria' motifs of the second part). However the work is combined with a newly-created song (the Flosutrosa melody) whose Golden Section rhythms gave the melody a 'stamina' that carried it over into many later compositions.' The two Maria themes and the Flosutrosa melody are based on direct 'extracts' from the Nørgårdian infinity series. The arching Flosutrosa melody is developed further in seven later Nørgård work from the orchestral work Twilight (1976) through the choral song Flosutrosa floruit (1991) the choral work Ut Rosa (2001) and the piano piece A Rose Petal (2002) to the harp works Consolazione (2002) Harp Concerto no. 2 - Through Thorns (2000) and Flowering (2007). One of the 'Marian melodies' has now been included in the standard Danish hymnal Den Danske Salmebog (no. 720 - Somåretgår/The year goes by) and both have formed startingpoints for about 20 later - especially vocal - works to or based on texts by the Danish poet Ole Sarvig (1921-1981).

(SZYMANOWSKI KAROL) Piano, Voix [Partition] PWM (Polskie Wydawnictwo Muzyczne)

Par SZYMANOWSKI KAROL. (VII) The Polish idiom appeared in Szymanowskis music in 1920, foreshadowing the beginning of a new period of creativity, later called nationalistic. Before this idiom was realised and such compositions typical of the Polish style as the ballet Harnasie, the Mazurkas, Stabat Mater, Fourth Symphony and Second Violin Concerto had been written, the change in musical thinking and the first experiments in the new language took place in songs. Symptoms of the new style manifested themselves fully in Slopiewnie, Op. 46 bis, composed in the summer of 1921 and published by Universal Edition. In these bizarre songs to bizarre words by Tuwim Szymanowski attempted to crystallize and generalize artistically some primaeval Polish, racial as he described them elements in music. The inspiring factor was undoubtedly the text by Julian Tuwim, abounding in new-coined words and imbued with its own music. It indicated the direction that artistic creativity was to take, and made the full corellation of the verbal and musical layers possible in, as Mieczyslaw Tomaszewski has stated, all the planse of co-operation phonic, structural, expressional and semantic. Based on A. Neuer Commentary to Complete Edition Volume C11 (VIII) Szymanowski did not yield to the temptation of easy over-stilization. Streching out to the deepest ethnic layers of his native musical culture, he made an attempt to mould and suitably fashion a Polish style of musical utterance. This tendency is apparent in the Three Lullabies, Op. 48, to words by Jaroslaw Iwaszkiewicz, composed in 1922 and published by Universal Edition in 1926. In the Lullabies we can find the confirmation of the fact that utterly new atmosphere which, according to the composer, Slopiewnie had introduced into his music, was not a once-for-all phenomemon. The elements of the new musical language, analised in connection with the earlier cycle, may here be regarded as assimilated. These are modalities in vocal melodies (Lullaby I) and cadences (Lullabies I and III), a bourdon effect with a tritone (Lullaby II). However these sometimes sligh and apparently unimportant details recur constatnly, an so acquire the nature of a definite compositional technique establishing a style based in an increasing degree on nationalistic elements. Based on Adam Neuer Commentary to Complete Edition Volume C11 (IX) The Childrens Rhymes, Op. 49, a cycle of twenty short songs by Kazimiera Illakowicz, composed in 1922-23, were a completely new creative experience for Szymanowski. He composed the Rhymes with his 11-year-old niece in mind. She was the daughter of Stanislawa Korwin-Szymanowska, who performed these songs for the first time in Warsaw on 25 February 1924. / Date parution : 2021-12-09/ Recueil / Chant et Piano

Tragédie-opéra Drame héroïque en trois actes-Christoph Willibald Gluck's mos...(+)
Tragédie-opéra Drame héroïque en trois actes-Christoph Willibald Gluck's most popular opera 'Orphée et Euridice' was performed in 1774 in Paris to sensational success. This new adaption followed the original Viennese version with Italian text that was first performed in 1762 under the direction of the composer in the Burgtheater. For the Paris version Gluck changed the leading part Orpheus from an alto to a tenor role and composed new recitatives. Both versions of Gluck's reform drama are based on a libretto by Ranieri de' Calzabigi and revolutionised metastasian opera of the 18th century. Solo and choral music instrumental music pantomime and dance are all closely connected; the myth replaces a historical plotsurrounded by intrigue; where there would have been a da-capo aria there are now simple song forms and coloratura is largely abandoned. These meticulously revised vocal scores of both versions are also newly set.Urtext editions based on 'Gluck The Complete Works'Revised and newly setThe revised editions are compatible with the old editionsT48Full score (BA2282-01) and vocal score (BA2282-90) available for salePerformance material (BA2282-72) available for hire
