Paul Mealor's Behold A Tender Babe is a work for Unaccompanied SATB Choir commissioned by the Hauser-Oberschneider family to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Summer Fields School. The work sets extracts from Robert Southwell's 'In Freezing Winter Night' and lasts around 4 minutes. A review in the September 2016 issue of Organist's Review states that the 'music responds sensitively and dramatically to the lines of the lyric it chooses to set rising triumphantly at the words 'with joy approach' before gently falling away as it repeatedly insists 'behold a tender babe'.' No less difficult but also no less rewarding is PaulMealor’s Behold a tender babe written a year earlier. But it is carefully written so that the difficulties are manageable. The two places where sopranos have a top C are the only points where sopranos divide so only the first sopranos ascend there. The music follows the details of the words with drama at ‘do homage to thy King’ and then falling away most beautifully to ‘behold a babe’. - Julian Elloway

Ce programme s'articulant autour des chorals sur Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland de J.S. Bach, c'est le texte de l'hymne d'Ambroise de Milan, dans la traduction allemande de Luther (c'est-à-dire le texte traité par Bach) qui est ici utilisé.
Si l'ordonnancement de ce texte paraît d'abord respecté, la partition commençant bien par la 1re strophe du choral, dans une harmonisation archaïsante de la mélodie traditionnelle, c'est la 7e strophe qui lui succède directement, imposant au discours une nouvelle direction. Le deuxième vers de cette strophe nous donne la clef du titre: Die Nacht gibt ein neu Licht dar (La nuit nous apporte une lumière nouvelle): nous voilà plongés dans la nuit de la Nativité. Après un épisode contemplatif, la polyphonie sera entraînée dans un crescendo culminant sur la dernière strophe, véritable explosion de joie et de louange.

Written for SATB choir and piano, with optional audience participation, Pas de deux is a work consisting of five movements by Paul Smith, the co-founder of VOCES8 and author of The VOCES8 Method. The movements can be performed individually or as one complete work. Pas de deux is inspired by the dance duet found in ballet, and the music takes the duet element of the dance to create a relationship between the performers and audience, enabling interaction between them and giving the option for performers and audience to make music together.
Suitable for all ages, this piece offers opportunities both to create and to perform, informed by Paul Smith’s expertise in leading participatory music events with hundreds of thousands of people around the world.
