Par BRUCKNER ANTON. Bruckner?s mighty Mass in F minor is one of his most significant creations and one of the great 19th-century choral works. The composer uniquely succeeds in exploring faith through the lens of music. In doing so, he ventures into extreme forms of expression, which caused some disgruntlement among the musicians at rehearsals for the premiere in November 1868. In subsequent years, however, the work has gradually become more accepted, and today presents a highly appealing challenge to advanced choirs. The Carus edition presents the Mass in F minor as the final 1893 version based on the autograph and the surviving copies from the copyist. As an Urtext edition it follows the latest scholarly standards ready for the Bruckner anniversary year in 2024! / Date parution : 2023-06-01/ Répertoire / Solistes [SATB], Double Choir et Piano

The ?Gloria? RV 589 is one of Vivaldi?s most popular compositions today and one of the most regularly performed sacred vocal works from the Baroque era. The work was in all probability composed around 1716 during Vivaldi?s time at the Ospedale della Piet an orphanage for girls in Venice.Although Vivaldi?s ?Gloria? (BA 8953) was written for solo voices and mixed choir it is likely that it was performed at the girls? orphanage with female voices only. Taking this into account Malcolm Bruno?s careful arrangement for choir SSAA is of some relevance. The work when set for female voices or children?s choir remains a true masterpiece. The?Kyrie? RV 587 (BA 8954)for two choirs and two string ensembles as arranged here for female choir displays its own charm. It can be performed together with the Gloria as a type of short mass. Both arrangements are based on the recently published Urtext editions of these works. The piano reductions by editor Malcolm Bruno are easy to play and preserve the character of the works.- Effective arrangements for female choir- Forewords in English and German- Straightforward idiomatic piano reductions- Kyrie and Gloria can be combined for performanceThe orchestral parts for the original SATB version can be used for the performance of these arrangements.

During Handel’s lifetime Giulio Cesare in Egitto was among his most successful operas. Today it is still one of the most frequently performed owing to the rich variety of its scenes and its remarkably inventive arias and ensembles which embellish the underlying affects with virtuoso aplomb. The Piano writing contains the musical numbers from the main version and observes the editorial decisions in Zschoch’s volume thereby making it possible to prepare authentic performances of what is perhaps Handel’s most popular opera. Vocal score of the main version based on the Urtext from the “Halle HandelEdition”. Clear easy-to-play Piano reduction. Italian text underlaid with newly revised singable German translation. German/English preface with information on performance history and editorial principles. Performance material (BA4078-72) available for hire.

O come let us sing HWV 253 Chandos Anthem No.8Handel’s three anthems (My song shall be alway HWV 252 O come let us sing HWV 253 O praise the Lord HWV 254) were composed in 1717 and 1718 for Cannons a country estate near to London. They take their nickname the “Chandos Anthems” from the owner of the estate the First Duke of Chandos. The three pieces are noteworthy for their festive character and their varied orchestral accompaniment. Handel borrows older material from his Italian period and his earlier works for the Chapel Royal in London – a standard procedure for this composer who reusedparticularly successful pieces as starting points for his later works. The scoring for solo voices chorus oboe strings and continuo was tailored to the musical resources of the small country estate. Two additional recorders are needed for “O come let us sing unto the Lord”.The anthems present the Urtext from the “Halle Handel Edition” and include uncomplicated and easy-to-play Piano reductions. In addition to the original English words the full scores and vocal scores also include a singing translation in German.- Full score & parts (BA4293) and vocal score (BA4293-90) available for sale

Saint-Saëns's Christmas Oratorio (or Oratorio de Noël) was written in 1858 when he was just 23. This piece was originally scored for five Vocal Soloists Chorus Harp String Quartet and Organ; this the vocal score contains a piano reduction. The Christmas Oratorio opens with a Prelude subtitled 'In the style of Sebastian Bach' harkening back to Bach's Christmas Oratorio. This opening prelude sets the scene for the Christmas story: its lilting pastoral quality creates images of the shepherds tending their flocks in the fields. In the remaining movements the vocal soloists take turns representing different characters such as the narrator ofthe story or as the angel who announces the birth of the baby Jesus while the chorus represents a multitude of angels singing to the glory of the Lord. The final movement of the piece which follows the model of old French Christmas songs is a virtual hymn of praise of all creation in the presence of God.The English version of the text is by N.H. Dole.

No group of works in Johann Sebastian Bach?s output is as wide-ranging as the cantatas. This is hardly surprisingconsidering that for over five years Bach was required to compose a work or at least re-work an existing one for every Sunday and festival of the church year as well as for numerous secular occasions such as council inaugurations school and university celebrations and royal birthdays. Unfortunately not all cantatas have survived. However over 200 sacred and secular works exist and form a corpus of works suitable for all possible occasions. This rich musical heritage is still as relevant today as it was then.

Pergolesi’s famous Stabat mater a work for two soloists strings and continuo quickly became a success throughout Europe. However there are numerous indications that it was also performed by choirs from very early on. Particular movements were very probably sung by a two-part choir whilst the arias were kept for the soloists. In this edition the outer movements and no. 8 are now scored for three-part choir (Sop MezSop Alto) in contrast to the solo aria movements. Three further movements are set as trios for three solo voices. The added parts are derived from the existing musical material. These lend this well-known work a completely new charmand provide a welcome addition to the repertoire for choral concerts. For performance material use original edition BA7679. Arrangement for female choir (Sop MezSop Alto) based on the Bärenreiter Urtext edition of the original work Clear straightforward piano reduction The arranger Malcolm Bruno is the editor of the Urtext edition of the Stabat Mater (BA 7679) and a renowned expert in 18th century Italian music.

The choral scene is in a state of change! On the one hand more and more choirs are lacking in male voices yet at the same time more and more female choirs are looking for high-quality literature beyond folksong arrangements. Bärenreiter is responding to these general trends with the publication of arrangements for three-part female choir (SMA) of well-known frequently-performed works. The first editions to be published are Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Coronation Mass” K.317 (BA 5691) a much-performed work within the standard repertoire and the “Missa brevis in D major” K. 194 (BA 5690-90) a charmingalternative for use in church services. With great skill and sensitivity to the music Heribert Breuer has carefully retained the substance of the original works at the same time giving them a completely new sound quality.- Arrangements for female choir (SMA) based on the Urtext of the “New Mozart Edition”- Idiomatic Piano reductionsThe arranger Heribert Breuer was professor of choral conducting and music theory at the Berlin University of the Arts until 2010. Unfortunately this version of the drama with ghosts shipwreck pirates attempted poisoning and other horrifying ingredients has not survived unlike Schubert?s popular incidental music which was already praised by contemporary critics. Serenade in three parts-Handel set the myth about the love of the shepherd Acis for the sea nymph Galatea from Ovid’s Metamorphoses a total of three times: in the cantata Aci Galatea e Polifemo HWV 72 (1708) the masque Acis and Galatea HWV 49a (1718) and finally the pasticcio-like serenata Acis and Galatea HWV 49b (1732) of which the original version is now made available in its complete form for the first time.A particular charm is provided by the use of two languages in the serenata. The work was originally conceived in English as was required for the first performance. However Handel’s Italian singers were criticised for their poor command of English so in the end many numbers were sung in Italian. The extensive appendix to the vocal score includes the additional arias and newly composed movements for the versions used in the 1734 and 1736 performances. But Mozart was evidently concerned to distinguish between an azione sacra and an azione teatrale in the music itself e.g. in the accompanied recitatives and the sacred aura of the final chorus. Oratorio in three parts The oratorio “Athalia” tells the Old Testame...(+)
Oratorio in three parts The oratorio “Athalia” tells the Old Testament story of the Queen Athalia. Handel composed it in 1733 for Oxford University where it was first performed later that year during the celebrations for the awarding of honorary degrees. The great success of this performance is generally regarded as a reason for Handel’s renewed interest in the oratorio form. As was frequently the case Handel also carried on composing this work after the first performance. Thus for the version which was performed in London in 1735 he introduced numbers in Italian for the Italian singer Carestini in the roleof Joad. He also ended the work with an organ concerto. For the performance in 1756 he drew on other works for the third act. Conversely large parts of the music to Athalia form the basis for other works by Handel such as “Parnasso in festa” (HWV 73) and the Wedding Anthem (HWV 262). The Piano reduction by Andreas Köhs (BA4082-90) based on the Urtext of the “Halle Handel” Edition includes the main version of 1733 together with an appendix containing the versions of 1735 and 1756 as well as the outline of a planned version of 1743 which was not performed. - Based on the Urtext of the “Halle Handel” Edition - Includes all versions - Detailed foreword (Ger/Eng) - Full score (BA4082) and Vocal score (BA4082-90) available for sale - Performance material (BA4082-72) available for hire

Today the Gloria RV 589 (BA 7674) is one of Vivaldi?s best-known compositions and one of the most frequently performed sacred vocal works from the Baroque period.Vivaldi wrote the ?Gloria? as a self-contained work in the style of a concertante mass. However it was probably also performed within church services. The scoring of the solo voices (SSA) suggests that the work was written during his period at the Ospedale della Piet around 1716. In the twelve movements of the ?Gloria? Vivaldi displays the whole range of his mastery from festive sublime outer movements to tender transparently scored solopassages. The same mastery has also been applied to the ? Kyrie? RV 587 (BA 8950) scored for two choirs and two groups of stringed instruments. The date of its composition remains unclear. It is a purely a choral work without solo passages. Both works can be performed independently but can also be combined as a kind of short mass. Although the authenticity of the autograph manuscript score is beyond doubt these new editions contain some re-evaluations in phrasing and performance practice which go beyond what other editions have to offer. The Piano reductions are straightforward clearly presented and preserve the character of the works.- Attractive choral pieces which can be combined to form a short mass.- Vocal score as well as choral score available for the ?Gloria?.- Informative foreword (Ger/Eng).
