Don Quichote de la Mancha is a tasteful musical adaptation of the famous novel by Miguel de Cervantes in four lively movements: The first movement presents the wise nobleman Don Quixote, and in the second movement we see Dulcinea, with whom the Don has an imaginary romance. The third movement deals with Don Quixote’s loyal servant, Sancho Panza, and in the fourth movement we meet Rocinante, the Don’s long-suffering horse!

L’Orchestr e d’Harmonie du Comté du Huntingdonshire, situé dans l’Est de l’Angleterre, a été fondé en 1993. En 2001, les musiciens invitent le compositeur Philip Sparke, pour un week-end de travail consacré ses œuvres. De cette collaboration chaleureuse, naît l’idée de passer commande d’une pièce pour le 10ème anniversaire de la création de la formation, célébré en 2003. Philip Sparke leur compose A Huntingdon Celebration.Cette ouverture courte et vive débute avec une introduction écrite en forme de fanfare qui s’inspire du thème principal, exposé, dans un premier temps, par les clarinettes et les saxophones, puis par l’Orchestre d’Harmonie en entier. Cuivres et boisétablissent une conversation musicale qui mène l’introduction d’un second thème tout en legato, sur un accompagnement bouillonnant en croches. Le passage central, plus lent, développe un choral dans les registres ténors. Le tempo premier revient ensuite et le thème initial est exposé nouveau, amorçant la reprise de la fanfare d’ouverture qui vient conclure l’œuvre sur une note brillante.

Questo breve e vivace brano d’apertura è ideale per iniziare un concerto. L’incipit è scandito da un tema in stile di fanfara eseguito dai clarinetti e dai sassofoni, sostenuto dall’intera banda. Dopo un corale centrale più lento, ritorna il tempo originale seguito dalla fanfara d’apertura che riappare portando il brano ad una trionfale chiusura.

This noble concert march was commissioned by the Musikverein Heek, Germany, for its 125th anniversary. In German mythology, Donar is the God of Thunder, and in the area around Heek, ‘Thunder Mountain’ is a household name. The work begins with a stately opening, followed by a beautiful trio melody with rhythmical and energetic sections. This is a march that features and showcases a range of musical aspects. It is perfect as an opener or to create variety during a concert.

Deze nobele concertmars werd geschreven in opdracht van de Duitse Musikverein Heek, ter gelegenheid van het 125-jarig bestaan van deze vereniging in 2017. De première vond onder leiding van de componist op 2 september plaats in de gemeente Heek. Donar is de dondergod uit de Germaanse mythologie en er is een specifieke reden voor de keuze van deze naam: in de regio rond Heek is de ‘Donderberg’ een begrip, zodat deze titel zeer toepasselijk is. Het lage register komt een paar keer duidelijk op de voorgrond om de donder en bliksem weer te geven. Het werk begint echter met een plechtstatige ‘entree’ een godheid waardig! De triomelodie daarentegen is naar de loffelijkegewoonte van Jan Van der Roost zangerig en melodieus. Kortom: dit is een mars die diverse muzikale aspecten bevat en etaleert.

In diesem Marsch werden verschiedene musikalische Aspekte verwendet. Er eignet sich bestens als Eröffnungsstück oder um während eines Konzertes für Abwechslung zu sorgen.

In 'Ding Dong it's Christmas' Scottish composer Bruce Fraser makes a sport of misleading his audience time and again. The title already indicates that this piece has been based on the well-known Carol 'Ding Dong Merrily on High', even if the melody makes a somewhat halting start. When it gathers pace, however, also due to the percussion section, suddenly various other carols may be recognized. Peace and quiet reign in the middle part, during which we can enjoy Bach's charming 'O Jesulein süss'. 'Ding Dong it's Christmas' ends in the same way it began, even if more and more Carols put in an appearance. Merry Christmas!

In 'Ding Dong it's Christmas' zet de Schotse componist Bruce Fraser de luisteraar op humorvolle wijze regelmatig op het verkeerde been. De titel geeft al aan dat het werkje gebaseerd is op het de bekende carol 'Ding Dong merrilyon high' , al komt de melodie wat moeilijk op gang. Als het lekker begint te lopen, mede dankzij het slagwerk, komen er plotseling verschillende carols om de hoek kijken. Het middendeel vormt een rustpunt. Hier kunnen we genietenvan het lieflijke 'O kindeke klein' van de grote Bach. 'Ding Dong it's Christmas' eindigt op dezelfde wijze zoals het begon, al komen er steeds meer carols op visite.
