Un deuxième recueil de 50 chants de Noël, principalement pour SATB, certains non accompagnés, et quelques accompagnements ayant pour piano, ou un organe, ou un orchestre, ou ensemble de cuivres. Beaucoup de chants de Noël sont à partir de sources traditionnelles, réarrangées: parmi les éléments composée spécialement pour ce volume sont des chants par William Walton, Benjamin Britten, Richard Rodney Bennett et William Mathias. John Rutter est né à Londres en 1945 et a étudié la musique au Clare College, Cambridge. Ses compositions embrassent la musique chorale, orchestrale et instrumentale, et il a édité ou co-édité plusieurs anthologies chorale dont quatre pour des volumes de Carols chorales avec Sir David Willcocks et l'Oxford Choral Classics série. De 1975 à 1979, il a été directeur de la musique au Clare College, et en 1981 il a formé son propre choeur, les Cambridge Singers. Il partage maintenant son temps entre la composition et la conduite et est recherché comme un chef d'orchestre invité pour le leader mondial des chorales et orchestres. Né en 1919, David Willcocks a commencé sa carrière musicale comme choriste à l'Abbaye de Westminster, plus tard, remportant des bourses à Clifton College et King 's College, Cambridge. Après son service de guerre, il a été élu Fellow du Collège King, et plus tard devint organiste de Salisbury et de cathédrales de Worcester, alors que la conduite des Three Choirs Festival à Worcester. 11 polyphonies d'Argentine, de Bolivie, du Brésil, du Pérou et des Caraïbes Ces polyphonies appartiennent à quelques genres musicaux qui n'étaient pas représentés dans les volumes 1 et 2 : kaluyo (Bolivie), tonada, tango (avec texte), chacarera (Argentine), valse (Pérou), rumba (Caraïbes).Les deux premières oeuvres de ce recueil sont des canons de grande vitalité rythmique, à cinq et trois voix. Dulce Jesus Mío (Mon Doux Jésus) est l'un des très rares exemples d'oeuvre polyphonique a cappella des Archives de Chiquitos (XVIIe-XVIIIe s., Concepción, Bolivie) - oeuvre religieuse, elle fut certainement écrite par un indien (élève des maîtres jésuites) et elle possède un texte autant en espagnol qu'en chiquitano (dialecte commun aux diverses ethnies qui vécurent ensemble dans les Missions des Jésuites). Les autres oeuvres de cette sélection sont d'origine populaire, avec des textes en espagnol ou en portugais, mis à part Verano Porteño (Eté à Buenos Aires), tango d'Astor Piazzolla composé d'onomatopées. / Choeur Mixte / 48 pages / Partition

The Welsh traditional song Suo Gân is here arranged for SATB Chorus and Organ Accompaniment by Stephen Cleobury. Written by an anonymous composer, in Welsh it literally means 'Lullaby'. This beautiful arrangement is sure to be a favourite with audiences and choirs alike. It features lyrics in both English and Welsh.This traditional Welsh song has been a favourite within the repertoire for many years, after having been first documented by folklorist Robert Bryan. With versions sung by Charlotte Church, Katherine Jenkins and the Choir of King's College, Cambridge, Suo Gân is one of the most recognisable and well-loved tunes in the Welsh and English repertoire. This new arrangement by Stephen Cleobury will be a welcome addition to any choir's performance, with the combination of such a new take on an established classic with simple beautiful music. / Choeur Mixte (SATB) Et Orgue

Løft mig kun bort / Come lift me up (for mixed chorus SSA*) *) the second movement may be performed by a children’s chorus or by the female voices (SSA) from a mixed chorus Programme note From my very first aquaintance with these Andersen poems I was deeply moved by the simple almost naive yet evocative imagery with which Andersenrealized his visions images like: “The Melody of the Heart” “The Poem of Beauty” “A Spiritual Hindustan” “Fly Death over the Sea of Time fly to Eternal Summer”. Along with this “childishness” Hans Christian Andersen’s poetry encompasses enormous – almost Willim Blake-ish – cosmic visions in the interpolations between e.g. “reaching the Heaven” as opposed to “you’ll find it in a Rosebud” or the juxtaposition of “Everyday Life” and “Eternal Poetry” - which become one. Thus the music came to life in my immediate encounter with these words which almost sang themselves into my Musical Furnace – if you will. Per Nørgård

Per Nørgård's Wölfli - A Discarded MisfitDramatic Choir Montage for an Actor/Recitator and Chamber Chorus (2007). Extracts from the preface:No idyll without catastrophe – no catastrophe without idyll.Adolf Wölfli (1864-1931 Switzerland) is a central figure in the so called mad arts i.e. art created by patients who are certifyably mentally ill. Wölfli’s vast and eclectic production consists of approximately 20.000 pages of prose poetry pictures and fragmentary musical compositions. All of which was created at an institutionin Waldau Bern from 1900-1931 (...). Danish composer Per Nørgård (born 1932) discovered by accident Wölfli’s art at the Louisiana Museum while on his way to a Schönberg concert a concert he never made it to. The encounter with Wölfli’s art was to become a major source of inspiration for Nørgård in the 1980’s. The inspiration resulted in Nørgård’s SYMPHONY NO. 4 (1981) entitled Indischer Roosen-Gaarten und Chineesischer Hexensee (after the title on a planned Musikbüchlein by Wölfli) and the opera THE DIVINE TIVOLI (1982) and numerous choral works. Nørgård’s works from the 1980’s inspired by Wölfli are characterised by being wild dramatic and moving.The present work WÖLFLI has its point of departure in the choral works of the 1980’s and songs and interludes from the opera. All this is combined with additional prose poetry and pictures by Wölfli which come together to form a music-dramatic portrait of the confined his thoughts and artistic universe. Per Nørgård's A Choral Hymn (On Frostbound Earth) from 1983 for Mixed Choir SATBB. Based on 'Choral Hymn' and a fragment of 'The Year'. Orig. version 'Choral Hymn': WH32008 for SATB Orig. DK version 'Korsalme': WH32007 Programme note When in 1975 I had finished composing my 3rd Symphony (begun in 1973) I wrote three simple melodies for two psalm texts by Ole Sarvig “The Year” and “Choral Hymn”. One of these was later included in the Danish Hymnbook under the title “Året – Som året går” (The Year).  Thesethree “Sarvig tunes” were derived from the same material as the second movement of the symphony and could be harmonized together in several different tempo relationships at the same time - like fractals. This inspired me to write several choral and instrumental works in the following decade based on these melodies for instance “Frost Psalm” “Winter Cantata” “Cycles” “Cantica” and this “A choral hymn (On frostbound earth) all coloured by the Nordic and mythic poem “The year” by Sarvig the beginning of which goes :  The passing year will pass its deep  So shall our mind reach winter´s sleep.  And as the tree stands leafles bare   Is winter´s realms: our minds aware.  - Ole Sarvig (translated by Helen and Ole Sarvig)  Per Nørgård  

Programme Note ABENDLIED & MÄRCHENFARBEN for accordion ensemble incl. choir and percussion ad lib. (1980).MÄRCHENFARBEN is a virtuoso piece for accordion ensemble based on Nørgård´s ?infinity series? and a special multi-layered rhythm also heard in the composers well known choral work ?Wie ein Kind? (second movement) from the same year 1980.This rhythm with the onomatopoeic nickname ´pischop´ has a swaying and breathing quality which seems well suited for an ensemble of accordions. Two percussion parts to be added ad lib. - are composed into the tone music of the accordions in ?Märchenfarben?.The piece was composed in 1980 for the very talented Det DanskeHarmonika Ensemble and its leader Jeanette Dyremose an ensemble that enlarged the instrumental piece with an introduction (as suggested by the composer) singing and playing Nørgård´s choral song ?Abendlied? (1980) to a sunset idyllic poem by Adolf Wölfli (1864-1930) including here the word ´märchenfarben´ the title of the shimmering and colorful instrumental music to follow with Märchenfarben. The duration of Abendlied & Märchenfarben is around 15-17 minutes (5-6´ + 10-11´).Per Nørgård

Per Nørgård’s setting of these sacred text for Mixed SATB chorus dates back to 1983 and includes Agnus Dei Qui Tollis Peccata Mundi and Dona Nobis Pacem.

Wrth dd r a thân is a work by Paul Mealor for Unaccompanied SATB Choir commissioned by the National Assembly for Wales to mark the Royal Opening of the Fifth National Assembly for Wales by HM The Queen. First performed at The Senedd Cardiff Bay the piece features lyrics in English and Welsh and lasts around 2.5 minutes.

Like the polarities of the hymn texts between lamentation and jubilation the motif appears in various disguises from a gloomy Japanese (death-) mode (first and second motet) to the lighter celebratory forms inthe familiar Chinese pentatonic scale and the Indonesian “pelog” scale (third and fourth motet). The mood-creating scales weave (like the text sections) in and out of each other ; just a few changes in notes change grief to joy from idyll to catastrophe.
