Deuxième année - Italie (S161) / Venezia e Napoli (S162)-While the first volume of Liszt?s Années de pèlerinage (?Pilgrim Years?) was inspired primarily by the landscape of Switzerland the creative impetus for the second volume was the art and literature of Italy. Edition Peters is proud to continue its acclaimed series of Liszt critical editions from world-renowned Liszt expert and concert pianist Leslie Howard with this new urtext edition of Années de pèlerinage Deuxième Année ? Italie. Containing an extensive critical commentary and introductory notes the edition (like its predecessor Suisse (EP72782)) also contains reproductions of the half-tint illustrations by Robert Kretschmer that appeared in the first edition. Supplement 8 of the New Liszt Edition contains first versions of Hungarian Rhapsodies Nos 12-21 and two shorter Liszt pieces with a Hungarian connection. All works in the volume appear here for the first time in a scholarly edition. This version of the Hungarian Rhapsodies ensued in 1846-50 from Magyar dallok (Hungarian Songs) Nos 1-11, published in Supplement 7. Piece #13 is based on the Rákóczi March, which Liszt set on several occasions. It had been a vital encore piece since his first concert in Hungary in 1839. Inclusion in this volume of the first version of the piece known as the Mosonyi Funeral March (a forerunner of the much later #7 in the Hungarian Historical Portraits) is especially notable as its autograph manuscript only emerged recently. A detailed preface in Hungarian, English, and German, including new research results, numerous manuscript facsimiles, and critical notes, makes this volume of the New Liszt Edition an important publication of immense scholarly value. Along with the cloth-bound Complete Edition, a paperback version for practical use has also been published. This editions contents are identical to those of the hardcover edition with the exception that the critical notes are not included. / Piano

Date parution : 2022-02-03/ Recueil / Piano

(Version for piano solo) and other works. Supplementary Volume 15 of the New Liszt Edition contains both earlier versions of published works and also several works that remained as manuscript. The most extensive work in this volume is the earliest known draft of the Piano Concerto in A major (written in 1839 for solo piano). Not only does the draft give insight into the process of the work?s genesis, but it also holds its own as a work for piano solo. Additionally, the volume contains several shorter works, such as a piano transcription of Robert Schumann?s Lied Widmung, which shows how original Liszt?s interpretations were, and also two early drafts of the Zweite Elegie dedicated to Lina Ramann (a former pupil of Liszt?s and his first biographer). The latter have been published in facsimile. Supplementary Volume 15 features a detailed preface in German, English and Hungarian, which reveals valuable details on each work. The cloth-bound version also has critical notes in English.

Including the Transcendental Etudes Ed. Busoni-Liszt's reputation as perhaps the greatest pianist of all time is powerfully supported by his dazzling body of work for solo piano. The undiminished popularity of his etudes with pianists and audiences alike have made them among the most performed and recorded works for solo piano in the Romantic reportoire. The first volume Series 1 include many of Liszt's most inspired piano works and are edited by the great pianist composer and musical scholar Ferruccio Busoni for the Franz Liszt Society and published by Breitkopf and Hartel in Leipzig in 1910-11. Each set of Etudes is a highly successful work in its own terms and are all fiendishly difficult. The separate ' Mazeppa' isyet another working of one of the etudes from these sets. The individual etudes range dramatically in style from the delicate refinement of 'Feux Follets' to the startling bravura of 'Wilde Jagd' (both from Transcendental Etudes). Each will bring to pianists and their listeners a moving encounter with the genius of this towering musical personality

Despite having already assumed the costs for a monument to Beethoven in Bonn Liszt's spiritual affinity for Beethoven also moved this greatest piano virtuoso of the nineteenth century to pay an even finer tribute: a superlative set of piano transcriptions of the master's nine symphonies. Liszt's brilliant and sensitive transcriptions enabled 19th century audiences and amateur pianists to become acquainted with Beethoven's works even when no orchestras were available. Indeed the great pianist's capacity for translating orchestral effects into pianistic terms was nothing short of astonishing. This volume contains the first five of the nine works reproduced from the originalplates authorised by Liszt himself. A memorable tribute from one musical genius to another these compositions will delight pianists and music lovers alike.

New edition based on the composer's manuscript-This edition of the three concert...(+)
New edition based on the composer's manuscript-This edition of the three concert études is the first and only for which the composer's autograph has been taken into consideration. This allows Liszt's popular Piano cycle to be seen in the most authentic form available today. No closer information has emerged about the origins of the études which appeared in 1849. The autograph which contains all three studies in complete form with elaborated notation and furnished with performance markings appeared in a catalogue in the mid-1930s. But after it was bought by the French pianist François Lang (1908-1944) there were doubts about its whereabouts for several decades. So even Volume I/2 of thecomplete New Liszt Edition published by Editio Musica Budapest in 1971 could rest only on the notation of the first printed editions. The new version edited by Adrienne Kaczmarczyk that appears here pays close heed to the points where knowledge of the manuscript calls for alteration and addition. The autograph also used as the engraver's copy confirms an earlier suspicion. The widely used subtitles (1. Il lamento 2. La leggerezza and 3. Un sospiro) were thought to be alien to Liszt's approach and are now known not to originate from the composer. They were presumably dreamed up by a Paris publisher.

Hungarian Fantasia S123-Performed by Neill Eisenstein piano Accompaniment: Stuttgart Symphony Orchestra Conductor: Emil Kahn Liszt transformed the whole concept of the concerto when he cast his A-major concerto in one single movement using the idea of thematic transformation. A poetical masterpiece both serene and glitteringly exciting which stands at the very pinnacle of Romantic piano literature. Liszt used his own Hungarian Rhapsody No. 14 as the basis for the Hungarian Fantasia the second piece featured on this MMO release. With its triumphal themes sparkling cadenzas and breathtaking finale this single-movement mini-concerto is a sparkling musical gem! A wonderful eminently accessiblepiece due to its relatively short length. Includes a high-quality printed music score and a compact disc containing a complete version with soloist in split-channel stereo (soloist on the right channel); then a second version in full stereo of the orchestral accompaniment minus the soloist.

Liszt wrote his two Ballades in 1845 49 and 1853 during a time of personal turmoil. The successful virtuoso increasingly saw himself as a composer who strove after formal clarity as shown by the Bminor sonata that was also composed in 1853. When Liszt began work on the first Ballade he had just separated from his mistress of many years Marie Comtesse d’Agoult. He called the first sketches for the work DernièresIllusions. A better-known work is the second Ballade in B minor with whose ending he struggled (the two fortissimo endings in Liszt’s autograph have been published for the first time in the appendix to ouredition).

Années de Pèlerinage Deuxième Année - Italie-Between 1837 39 Liszt was travelling through Italy with Marie d?Agoult. As was the case with the first volume of the Années de Pèlerinage Schweiz (1835/36) he once again recorded his travel impressions in musicalform. He devoted himself to subjects from literature (Petrarca Dante) and the visual arts (Raffael Michelangelo). Many years later Liszt reworked the pieces publishing them in 1858 as Années de Pèlerinage Zweites Jahr Italien. The central work in this volume is the large-scale so-called Dante Sonata (Après une Lecture de Dante see also single edition HN 981). The Sonetto 104 del Petrarca (also available as a single edition HN 982) isjust as popular. With the helpof the splendid facsimile reproduction Henle were able to analyse several passages in the autograph more reliably; in addition the editor Ernst Herttrich not only consulted the first edition but also a copy of a studentof Liszt’s in which the composer had made entries in his own hand. Clara Schumann reacted with a lack of understanding when Liszt sent the sonata: “It is only blind noise –not a single healthy thought everything confused.” Today we view this differently.
