Par BARTOK BELA. Bartók?s Second String Quartet was composed ? with several long interruptions ? between 1915 and 1918, after he had spent several years almost solely devoted to collecting folk music. The melody and rhythms of the riotous middle movement ?Allegro, molto capriccioso? provide impressive testimony of how his research trips had taken him as far as North Africa. The first edition of this quartet, published in Vienna in 1920, contains a conspicuous number of errors that were only partially corrected in a later revision undertaken by Bartók. As late as the 1940s he noted changes in his personal copy of the score that have never previously appeared in print. These late changes by Bartók are taken into account in this definitive edition of the string quartets supervised by Bartók scholar László Somfai, with problematic passages in the sources carefully documented. It is the first-ever Urtext edition of this work. Originally composed for full orchestra, the movement opens with a powerful C-minor introduction before turning to a bright, cheerfuland graceful C major. Later in the work, the tonality turns to E-flat, and eventually returns to C minor. The most important group of works comprises the string quartets, 10 of which have survived. They were composed during the 1770s, whenHaydn was developing this class of music. The differing balance between such contrasting musical elements as entries in imitation, courtly melody, swift changes of tempo and unexpected modulations gives each of the quartets its special charm. Thefact that six of them were published in 1784 as Krauss 'Opus 1' by the publisher J. J. Hummel shows that the composer himself was convinced by his quartets. The autograph of a composition always makes fascinating reading - and this is particularly true of Schubert's Trio in Eb major op. 100, as it underwent many changes during its composition. The manuscript, parts of which were greatly revised, bears eloquent witness to this and offers an opportunity to trace the intricacies of Schubert's phrasing and articulation. This source is in a private collection and our facsimile makes it accessible to the public for the very first time. The story of the suppression of his Violin Concerto by well-meaning friends is relatively well-known. Few, however, know that the version of the Cello Concerto that is routinely heard today is so far from Schumann’s original conception of the work – not only in details of phrasing and articulation, but also featuring a different ending with a bold final flourish from the cello. Composed in a burst of inspiration in two weeks in October 1850 shortly after he and Clara had moved to Düsseldorf, Schumann (who in 1850 was still in good health) never heard the piece performed. In an effort to promote a performance of the work, he gave the score to the cellist Robert Emil Bockmühl. Bockmühl made revisions that Schumann resisted, and the hoped-for performance never happened. Schumann’s health failed and he died aged just 46 in 1856. The Concerto, in an already substantially revised form, was premiered in 1860 but it was not given significant recognition until it was championed by Pablo Casals in the 20th century by which time (and since) the text for the work had accreted additions and alterations from generations of soloists. Now Josephine Knight, Piatti Professor of Cello at the Royal Academy of Music, London has returned to the original 1850 manuscript of the work, which is in the Biblioteka Jagiellonska in Kraków, to reveal Schumann’s original thoughts for the first time in a modern Urtext edition. The edition reflects Schumann’s original conception of the work as a Concertstück and restores Schumann’s musical text, free of posthumous interventions. ‘My ultimate wish,’ says the editor, ‘is to give performers both access to, and confidence that they are playing from, an edition which is a true representation of the piece in its original form, no matter how much more difficult this might be. Yannis Xenakis and Toru Takemitsu were there, among others, and we were walking around in the dark one evening when a Topeng appeared to us, in full action: Balinese musical theatre with one actor successively playing several legendary characters by means of mask changes carried out in extreme agitation behind a curtain, accompanied by a raging gamelan. The memory of these little dramas has naturally lost much of its violence when it is evoked today in my 'Quartet VIII'. So we shall hear it here as if in a dream...'' Par DAVIES PETER MAXWELL. Peter Maxwell Davies spent a day at a gynaecological clinic in London at the invitation of Professor Ian Craft, who commissioned the piece in memory of his father. During his time there he met many people and shared in some of the deep emotions they experienced. Artemis Locheia is the Greek Godess of Fertility. In this one movement, 25 minute work, the joy and exuberance experienced by couples when pregnancy is confirmed is captured. There are many tempo changes and two extended cadenzas for the clarinet. Par MURAIL TRISTAN. Une Lettre de Vincent, pour flûte et violoncelle, est la pièce la plus récente ici (2018). Elle fait partie du cycle Portulan, un cycle de pièces de musique de chambre en cours d'élaboration, qui comporte actuellement huit pièces, écrites pour diverses combinaisons instrumentales parmi un ensemble de huit musiciens. Les portulans étaient d'anciens atlas maritimes, souvent ornés d'enluminures, qui traçaient les côtes et indiquaient les repères principaux au navigateur médiéval alors dépourvu de boussole. Chaque pièce du cycle se réfère à quelque chose, lieu, voyage, lecture, expérience esthétique, de particulière signification pour moi. Le point de départ de la Lettre de Vincent est un souvenir d'enfance : un livre que l'on m'avait offert, sur Van Gogh, où, en plus de reproductions de ses oeuvres, on pouvait trouver quelques-unes des lettres qu'il écrivait à son frère Theo, qui lui envoyait régulièrement de l'argent, des toiles, des couleurs. J'avais été très impressionné, et ému, autant par la peinture, que par le contenu de ces lettres, à la fois naïf, poignant, suppliant, parfois désespéré, souvent assez décousu, sautant d'une idée à l'autre. Beaucoup plus tard, j'ai retrouvé ces lettres, en particulier un petit opuscule contenant les dernières lettres, celles qu'il écrivit depuis Auvers-sur-Oise, pendant les derniers mois de sa vie, et ces émotions d'enfance sont revenues. La pièce débute par un court motif de quatre notes, qui évoque les mots 'Mon cher Theo', par quoi commencent toutes les lettres de Vincent. Ce motif va se transformer tout au long de l'oeuvre, et se mêler à divers autres éléments - en particulier des échanges très rapides entre harmoniques de flûte et de violoncelle, selon la technique dite de hoquet, métaphore d'une technique picturale chère à Van Gogh, qui consiste en l'accumulation de petites touches de peinture. J'habite aujourd'hui dans cette Provence que Van Gogh avait choisie pour y trouver sa palette colorée. Certains soirs, la pleine lune se lève derrière les grands cyprès du jardin... The brightness of D Major is perfect for string orchestra, and the yellow color of the mimosa flower reminds me of this key. Mimosa Shower opens with a vivid impressionistic introduction, followed by a gently flowing theme. Every instrument plays the melody which flows side to side. Yukiko Nishimura creates a dialogue between the sections of the orchestra, asking each part to have awareness of the conversation and to respond musically. The orchestra creates harmonies which ebb and flow as the wind blows through the mimosas.
