Arrangeur: Robert Rainford. Par BRUCH MAZ. 7 short, melodic pieces with chances ...(+)
Arrangeur: Robert Rainford. Par BRUCH MAZ. 7 short, melodic pieces with chances for both soloists to shine. Max Bruch (1838-1920) was a German Romantic composer, conductor and teacher. A child prodigy, he composed his first pieces at the age of nine, and went on to hold musical posts in Mannheim, Berlin and Bonn. He also spent three seasons as conductor of the Liverpool Philharmonic Society. In his lifetime he was known mostly as a choral composer, but it is for his first violin concerto that he is chiefly remembered now. These dances were first published in 1892 for violin and piano, although Bruch later arranged them for solo piano, and also for orchestra. The slow, stately introduction leads in to seven dances in volume one, each a charming character study. Individual movements aredramatic, then tranquil: dance-like then reflective. The third, fifth and seventh movements have the feeling of folk-dances, while the others are more lyrical and expressive. Structurally the pieces are fairly simple, with melody sections flowing in to each other. Some ideas are developed into links and codas. In this arrangement, both solo players share the melodic material fairly evenly. Each has a solo movement to play, with the other movements featuring call and answer moments, harmony sections and contrapuntal elements to enjoy. Technically quite advanced, with the music covering the whole range of the instrument, these gems of pieces are well worth working on. / Niveau : Intermédiaire à Avancé / Répertoire / Flûte Traversière, Hautbois et Piano

Demanding salon music for string quartet (with double-bass ad libitum) is provided by Wolfgang Birtel in his 'Latin Dances' with four titles which can be played individually or as a little suite. The first dance is the chorinho 'Não me toques' by Zequinha de Abreu (1880-1935) who not only wrote 'Tico Tico' but also other rousing pieces of music. Ernesto Nazareth (1863-1934) is considered to be the 'inventor' of the Brazilian tango and waltz: He titled the waltz, which follows as second title, 'Ingenious'. These rather unknown titles are followed by two absolute worldwide hits: 'Bolada de Aficionado' by A.G. Villoldo and then the everlasting beguine 'Bésame Mucho' by the Mexican composer Consuelo Velázques (1916-2005). Whether individually or as a 'four-pack' - the fingers will be twitching and the toes will be tingling for this music carries away musicians and audience alike. / Quatuor A Cordes

To see the summer sky for Violin and Viola falls into four movements. The first ...(+)
To see the summer sky for Violin and Viola falls into four movements. The first movement opens with the two instruments sounding almost as one playing very high glassy harmonics. Gradually an expressive viola solo emerges withboth instruments descending to their lower ranges. A livelier quasi scherzando solo for violin accompanied by viola pedal notes leads to a chorale like passage the violin at the top of its range whilst the viola is at itslowest. The movement ends with the two instruments coming together once again on a unison Bb and fades away almost as it has begun but this time in the husky lower registers. The second movement is much faster and openswith a downward flurry for both instruments. A continuous pizzicato line for viola is interrupted by more violent passages in the violin. The two instruments come together in a dance-like passage before the roles are reversed. Finally an ecstatic melody surfaces in the viola and is later continued in the violin before the movement closes with the spiky figures of its opening the two instruments ending in unison. The third movement encompasses isthe most delicate and still music of the piece. After a very tranquil opening an expressive violin melody is accompanied by a gentle rocking figure in the viola. Tentative at first intensity and speed gather until the violinreaches stratospheric heights. Both of the instruments play at the extremes of their registers before moving to common ground for a more lively textural passage. This is followed by a passionate reminder of the movement’s opening gradually fading away to nothing. The piece ends with a Moto Perpetuo. The instruments begin by dovetailing a single line which develops into two strands before a more violent section appears punctuated by strident doublestops. Both instruments have slightly manic solo episodes before the movement quickly dies away in the single line of its opening

Commissioned by the Presteigne Festival of Music and the Arts Limited with funds provided by the Arts Council of Wales for premiere in August 2012 by the Carducci String Quartet in St. Andrew?s Church Presteigne.Composer's Note'Some years ago I noted down the opening theme of what I anticipated would be a relatively Classical string quartet ?Classical? in the sense of the forms adopted plus perhaps a predominantly lyrical tone of voice. The commission for this work from the Presteigne Festival for their 30th anniversary in 2012 gave me the opportunity of putting into practice this long-held idea. It isdedicated to the Festival and to the Carducci Quartet whose career as much-admired friends and colleagues I have greatly enjoyed. The only break with ?classical? tradition is that there are five movements instead of four with two Scherzi as the second and third though both these are very short and contrasting. I found myself listening to Haydn?s string quartets a lot before and during the composition of this work and I hope the spirit of his delight in writing for this medium is echoed in my own music. The opening movement is in sonata form unusually for me and lyricism is I hope the basis of it though there is a good deal of activity at times. The Scherzo light and marked by frequently-changing rhythms is followed by an equally short but ferocious Perpetuum mobile marked Wild und rasch (one of my favourite German tempo markings). The fourth movement is an intense Adagio in which a single phrase uttered strongly in unison is gradually transformed into gentle diatonic chords before the close intermingled with cadenzas for cello for viola and for the two violins together. The finale (a Rondo) resumes the classical tone of the first movement but apart from one dance-like episode it builds up a fair head of steam towards a final Presto which however ascends slows and quietens towards a gentle summer sky at dusk.'

Par RAE JAMES. This collection of twelve very easy original pieces was written with the aim of providing players in the earliest stage of their musical development with solo and group performance material. Although very elementary, the pieces are composed in a wide variety of styles in order to provide a well-balanced musical diet for the young performer.
All of these pieces for young violists in their earliest stages of learning can be performed as solos with piano accompaniment (free download) or in unison with others. Some have an optional 2nd part to enrich the ensemble. Whilst these 12 pieces are written specifically for the viola and address the challenges a beginner violist would encounter, the last four pieces are also “key friendly” for beginners on most instruments and are therefore suitable for mixed instrumental groups. These same four pieces appear in books for other instruments in the Debut series. A CD providing stimulating demonstration performances for listening as well as “minus-one” accompaniments for playing along at home.
• Free download of the piano accompaniment parts
• CD with play-along version and full version for practising at home
A further option: mixed ensemble! Whilst these twelve pieces are written specifically for each respective solo instrument, the last four pieces are also suitable for mixed instrumental groups. These same four pieces appear in books for other instruments in the Debut series – great fun for all! / Pédagogie / Recueil / 1-2 Altos et Piano

for piano and woodwind quintet. Par JALBERT PIERRE. Wind Dances is in seven short contrasting movements, each containing dance-like rhythms, both slow and fast. Having two sons who both play the clarinet, I've heard many a woodwind quintet, so I've been wanting to write for the medium for quite a while. In this instance, I also added my own instrument, the piano.
The work opens with a fast movement containing driving rhythms in the winds, which are then answered by the piano. The second movement features colorful effects in the winds and piano (slap tongue, air sounds, muted tones) leading to a long extended lyrical line, gradually orchestrated to involve all the winds. The third movement is a dynamic scherzo, with a separate middle section similar to a traditional Trio section. The slowly unfolding fourth movement is the longest of the piece and anchors the middle of the work. The fifth movement is a kind of echo of the third movement, though this time the dynamic scherzo is high and light, rather than low and dark. The sixth movement is related to the second movement, and is basically a solo cadenza for the clarinet, with a few accompanimental gestures in the piano. The seventh and final movement reprises material from the first movement, this time with new and driving dance-like gestures added.

From my life-In a letter of 12th April 1878 (i.e. when he had already lost his hearing) the composer declares that his design was to symbolize the course of his life in this quartet.1st Movement: Love of art in youth the unsatisfied longing for something inexpressible also a presentment of approaching mis-fortune.2nd Movement: Quasi Polka refers to a merry youth during which Smetana enjoyed dancing passionately and wrote dances with ease.3rd Movement: Largo sostenuto the felicity of his first love for the girl who later became his wife.4th Movement: Illustrates his perception of national music and the joy of success only to be suddenly broken by the extend E in the highestregister the fatal note that sounded in the composer's ear just before his deafness. Painful remembrances of the first stages of his career a fleeting ray of hope then ultimately resignation to inescapable fate.

Jouni Kaipainen's String Quartet No. 6 'The Terror Run' Op. 92. Commissioned by the BBC Radio for the Proms concerts 2010. Dedicated to the Meta4 Quartet. Parts available: WH31197A Programme note: My former experience in writing string quartets has made me used to the idea that a piece of mine in this genre lasts close to half an hour and consists of several movements with different characters. This time the commission clearly stated a duration of 12 minutes and this naturally brought about lots of thinking and orientating. Eventually I luckily found out that I actually can alter mybasic “string quartet philosophy” so that such a short piece became an existing option. In the music itself there is nothing very much to explain. The quartet is for the most part quite lively flowing music in fast tempi. In the very beginning there is something haunting in the atmosphere but soon joyful for the most part delicately light at times maybe also “dance-like” characters take over. But in terms of dramaturgy the music has a tendency to grow more weighty and harsh and these quasi-violent elements gradually threaten the sunny unproblematic flow. Closer to the end we come to a point where nothing is easy anymore. This brings about a slow section of quite different nature and after that the former hilarious swing tries to make a comeback – but does not really succeed. The run goes on but the overtones are now more shadowy and the mood on the scary side. The subtitle comes from the novel The Camomile Lawn (1984) by Mary Wesley of which Ken Taylor made a wonderful TV series adaptation for Channel 4 (1992) where a marvellous casting of great actors supports the colourful beautiful and delightful story. In this novel young Sophie (gorgeously played by the 10-year-old Rebecca Hall) has eagerly waited for her older cousins to arrive to her aunt’s house at the

Parts for String Quartet No.3 'Angel's Music' by Bent Sørensen (1988) Premiered by the Arditti String Quartet at the Danish Radio Concert Hall 16 November 1988. Score available: KP00250The composer writes:'Even when I was writing 'Adieu' I knew that I wished to write 'Angel’s Music'. The title existed in an incomplete form in my mind and gradually more and more ideas and a few outlines became clear. The actual work on 'Angel’s Music' was started in Rome where I spent the autumn of 1987 staying at 'The Danish Academy'. Whether this stay has influenced the quartet or not is impossible to say. however it is true to say that inthe Roman churches I visited I saw countless angels playing in the top of frescoes and altars. Without these angels together with the many crackled-gold paintings in this city and my general fascination with the Italian renaissance painter Fra Angelico (in fact there are only a few paintings by him in Rome but even his name..!) I am not sure my quartet would have been what it is. Anyway I do feel that there is a bit of Italy in the piece. The angels apart there are in the short rhythmic agitating part of the quartet reminiscences of the Italian medieval Trotto dance and in the most expressive part of the piece there are flashes of Puccini-like music. From the very beginning of my work on the quartet the distant extremely muted sound in the high register which opens the piece was on my mind. A sound satiated with a dense heterophonic and polyphonic texture of elegiac melody and vibrating trills. I imagined that 'little songs' (maybe angel songs) could be created in this density these songs constantly echoing themselves. Gradually as this sound got a more and more concrete musical and instrumental form I felt that not only should the 'little songs' be created played and die out in an echo but also that the general pattern of the quartet should give the feeling of music which from the distance is getting closer and closer

Intermediate-level arrangements of well-known Classical and Romantic works. Par ...(+)
Intermediate-level arrangements of well-known Classical and Romantic works. Par AUTEURS DIVERS / BROOKER DAVID (Arr.). In his preface to 'Piano Trios on Stage”, the arranger, David Brooker, reminds us that, just as the string quartet, the piano trio has always been one of the pillars of chamber music. In the 19th and early 20th century, it was almost like the later invention of the gramophone record, allowing larger works, in arrangement, as well as lighter pieces to be presented to small audiences, often as background music.
David comments that string players have plenty of easy material to introduce them to the pleasure of making music with other instrumentalists but when it comes to piano parts these are usually written or arranged with a teacher or more advanced student in mind. David sets out to rectify that imbalance and his arrangements aim to put all three players on an equal footing.
Of easy to intermediate standard, they are ideal for violinists, cellists and pianists who are now ready to try their hand at proper chamber music. The music is fun and instantly recognizable, drawing on Grieg's 'Peer Gynt”, Tchaikovsky's 'Nutcracker” and Leopold Mozart's 'Musical Sleigh Ride”./ Recueil / Violon Ou Flûte, Violoncelle Et Piano

Béla Bartók composed his 44 Violin Duos in 1931, at the urging of the German violin pedagogue Erich Doflein. With two exceptions, all the pieces are based on original folk music themes, most of which the composer himself collected in the course of his numerous collecting trips to the Carpathian Basin and in Algeria. Although conceived as parts of a pedagogically motivated set, these little pieces are highly effective in concert performance as well. The full score for String Quartet No.3 'Angel's Music' by Bent Sørensen (1988...(+)
The full score for String Quartet No.3 'Angel's Music' by Bent Sørensen (1988) Premiered by the Arditti String Quartet at the Danish Radio Concert Hall 16 November 1988. Parts available: KP00249The composer writes:'Even when I was writing 'Adieu' I knew that I wished to write 'Angel’s Music'.
