Study Score. Par DVORAK ANTONIN. Dvorák n'avait que vingt ans quand il écrivit son Quatuor à cordes n o 1 en la majeur, op. 2 (1862). Le travail est considéré comme le deuxième compositeur travail le plus important, après le Quintette à cordes en la mineur op. 1. Dvorák ne sont pas retournés au travail sur op. 2 jusqu'à 1887, quand il a été la révision de ses premières oeuvres. Il a supprimé les sections de ce quatuor substantielle n'épargnant que le Scherzo, les autres mouvements, où tous coupés par près d'un tiers. Le travail a finalement été créée par des musiciens d'orchestre du Théâtre national, mais une édition imprimée n'a pas été publié avant le milieu du 20e siècle. Cette nouvelle édition Bärenreiter présente le texte musical principal de l'édition complète de 1989, qui donne à l'oeuvre dans sa forme définitive, après la révision de Dvorák. La période de confinement qui a débuté en France en mars 2020 a été pour moi l'occasion de réfléchir aux directions que je désirais prendre dans les années à venir et de me lancer quelques petits défis d'écriture. Parmi eux, j'ai décidé de débuter la composition de deux pièces pour le même effectif, à savoir le quatuor à cordes, afin précisément de tester ma capacité à me renouveler. Si le Quatuor n°5 est une œuvre abstraite et continue (il s'agit en fait d'un canon rigoureux entre les quatre instruments), le Quatuor n°7 est une pièce moins linéaire, ou plutôt, une pièce où des linéarités se succèdent et s'entrechoquent. Il s'agit en effet d'une œuvre ou plusieurs processus de déformation d'une idée initiale rythment la forme. La notion de périodicité est omniprésente, dès le début de l'œuvre où un accord est répété à intervalle de plusieurs secondes, le silence étant progressivement investi par des textures de plus en plus continues. Au milieu de la pièce, les quatre instruments investissent une texture globale composée de périodicités superposées, comme si des métronomes à des tempi différents étaient déclenchés en même temps. Ce quatuor est une œuvre que je qualifierais de 'mécanique' et a été composé dans la perspective d'être augmenté par un orchestre dans une pièce concertante, Cadenza n°4, que j'ai déjà écrite. But after thoroughly revising the work he declined to publish it; instead he wrote a new piano quintet in the same key the famous Op.81. This is the Study Score edition of Per Nørgård's String Quartet No.8 'Night Descending'. Programme note: This piece is based on 5 sections from my chamber opera Nuit des homme where a string quartet is the leading instrumental ensemble. Even though the subject is The Great War (1st World War) the plot is on a psychological level and follows the development of a couple - in poems of Guillaume Apollinaire. The couple's war enthusiasm in the beginning is replaced by horror and in the end dehumanizing. The five movements of the quartet express phases in this process: from the Eulogy of the prologue praise of the The Sun of Gold above the humananimal - a rhythmic tense and still more and more militaristic movement - to The Journey whose enlargement of conscience due to the exhausting tempo of the new era is suddenly stopped in the fourth movement carrying the title of the piece and expressing the calm before storm not as a blessing of peace but as a latent anxiety. In the epilogue of the fifth movement the theme of the prologue reappears but it is changed from hymn to elegy. The quartet is dedicated to the Zapolsky Quartet who took part in the world premiere of the opera in September 1996. Per Nørgård 1997

Programme Note Per Nørgård LIBRO PER NOBUKO (1992)LIBRO PER NOBUKO (BOOK FOR NOBUKO) consists of two pieces written for Nobuko Imai the Japanese violist.Dedicated Nobuko Imai (1) and Bo [Vincens Steensen-Leth] (2) 1: Sonata 'The Secret Melody' (1a Prologue 1b Roaming 1c Singing 1d Playing 1e Epilogue) 2: Bofast (in English: Resident)The first (and longest) piece is a sonata in five movements called LA MELODIA SEGRETA (THE SECRET MELODY). The title is borrowed from a book by Trinh Xuan Thuan the Vietnamese astrophysicist. Of the mysterious and inexplicable order of the universe he writes: Nature sends us the notes of a music formed by a melody that will remain secretforever.The five movements of the sonata circumscribe a hidden melody: a clear melodic shape appears often enough but it soon reveals itself as being part of another superior melody - and so on. In this labyrinthine way the three middle movements framed by a short prologue and epilogue unfold different moods (roaming singing playing) in an eternal hide-and-seek of the melody (melodies).The second piece for Nobuko BOFAST (RESIDENT) is dedicated to Bo Vincens Steensen-Leth in gratitude of the many and selfless services he has rendered to the musical audiences at the locality of Langeland Denmark. The piece remains faithful to one single motif a 'resident' like Bo and his ancestors who have been residents at the manor house Steensgaard for over 400 years.Per Nørgård 1997

The first movement is full of dramatic contrasts; it is followed by a second movement whose basic mood of meditative rest is challenged by occasional centrifugal utbursts while the third movement takes the inherent conflicts to a higher level contrasting material of introspective lyricism with excessively pathetic moods.The final ?way out? is a retrograde one (back) ?into the source?: through a constant accelerando-diminuendo the piece disappears into a vanishing point. The ?into thesource? of the title may be visualized as a reversed fountain-action: the broad fan-like spread of the first movement a more coherent-solid second movement and finally - in the third movement - a return-run ever more vehemently like a suction into the spring itself ?The musical motifs are varied; there are traffic-situations (which I heard!) with stomping and machine-like rhythms in different but simultaneous tempi and there are more abstract upwards and downwards half-tone-scales with changing accents creating glimpses of melodies.INTO THE SOURCE String Quartet No. 9 was composed on a double-commission from the Orion Quartet and the Vertavo Quartet. Par SCHOENBERG ARNOLD. Cette pièce de musique de chambre, composée en 1907?1908, marque une rupture non seulement dans l??uvre de Schönberg, mais aussi plus largement dans l?histoire moderne de la musique. Le système tonal majeur/mineur qui s?imposait depuis des siècles est, au fil des quatre mouvements, abandonné de manière toujours plus sensible au profit d?une atonalité libre. Cette rupture avec la tradition musico-historique va de pair avec un autre coup porté aux conventions: Schönberg introduit dans les deux derniers mouvements une voix de soprano pour mettre en musique deux poèmes de Stefan George. Avec la transition vers l?atonalité, Schönberg ouvre la voie à un nouveau langage musical, qui aboutira peu de temps après au dodécaphonisme. Pas de doute: son Second quatuor à cordes a marqué le cours de l?histoire de la musique. La nouvelle édition Henle a été réalisée par Ullrich Scheideler, spécialiste de Schönberg, sur la base des recherches les plus récentes. Par D\'ADAMO DANIEL. ?Quatuor n°2? was first performed by the Tana string quartet on April 14, 2013, at Radio France, Paris. ?I conceived a piece whose principal subject was going to consist in the description of a minuscule sonic element. The description of this tiny initial material would be so precise, so detailed that, deployed on a much larger scale than its original one, it would occupy the entire duration of the piece. At that point, I just had to choose a sound model as the starting point of the piece, the sound that would best characterize the string instruments themselves: the noisy sound produced by the bow barely coming in contact with one of the strings, getting ready to acquire speed, weight, acceleration, and producing a full sound of a violin, a viola or a cello?? Partition + matériel. Par MANTOVANI BRUNO. Tout comme le précédent ouvrage consacré à cette formation, le Quatuor à cordes n°3 est une pièce peu polyphonique où le matériau est similaire pour tous les instruments. En revanche, il s'agit comme dans mes récents travaux (je pense à Tourbillons pour deux pianos) d'une tentative d'épuration du langage. Les idées musicales ici s'entrechoquent mais sont développées dans une logique plus extrême qu'auparavant. L'obsession est ici le maître mot, que ce soit dans la recherche de la densité (début de la pièce) comme sur le plan rythmique (dans une section centrale où des périodicités se superposent) ou sur celui du flux (abondance de trilles communs aux quatre instruments). Au milieu de ce discours 'jusqu'au-boutiste', deux cadences, une de violon et l'autre de violoncelle, aèrent un discours qui tend en permanence vers une forme d'oppression. The interest dates back to my school years when I was fortunate to be able to compose for a cello-playing schoolmate and to accompany him on the piano. I discovered then the innumerable nuances of sound and playing varieties offered by just one bow four strings and five fingers.. My second string quartet Quartetto Brioso has a firm root in the Nordic traditionand is strongly inspired by Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) and my teacher Vagn Holmboe (1909-96). Per Nørgård

The interest dates back to my school years when I was fortunate to be able to compose for a cello-playing schoolmate and to accompany him on the piano. I discovered then the innumerable nuances of sound and playing varieties offered by just one bow four strings and five fingers..  The bell-like association if the title reflects the special texture of the work. Like thecontinously changing overtones of a struck resonating bell the four parts are unified through one single basic line broken up in a multitude of changing dynamics of a multifacetted rhythm and resulting in an ever transforming harmony.  The duration of the work is ca 12 minutes.  Per Nørgård (1998)
