Par JOPLIN SCOTT. Scott Joplin, pianiste et compositeur de ragtime américain, est né à Texarkana (Texas) en 1868. Il apprend à jouer du piano auprès d'un musicien allemand, qui lui fait connaître la musique des grands compositeurs européens. Entre 1885 et 1893, Joplin joue dans des cabarets et des bars de St. Louis - à partir de 1894, il se produit au Maple Leaf Club à Sedalia. Il enseigne également la musique.
Par la suite, il consacre tout son temps à la composition. En 1909, il déménage à New York. Joplin compose plus de 600 ragtimes, une symphonie et deux opéras (dont Treemonisha, 1911). On le surnomme 'King of Ragtime' et il est sans aucun doute l'un des maîtres de l'invention mélodique. Il meurt à New York en 1917.

Chaconne. Par LERDAHL FRED. Chaconne (2016), for string quartet, was commissioned by the Daedalus Quartet to celebrate its 15th anniversary. The commission was supported by New Music USA, made possible by annual program support and/or endowment gifts from Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Helen F. Whitaker Fund, and Aaron Copland Fund for Music.
My music has a substantial history with Daedalus. I composed the Third String Quartet (2008) for them, and subsequently they performed my three string quartets on several occasions and recorded them brilliantly on Bridge Records (Bridge 9352: Music of Fred Lerdahl, vol. 3). Chaconne is in one movement lasting 19 minutes. It is effectively my fourth string quartet. Quartets 1-3 form a unified cycle lasting 70 minutes. When I finished the cycle, I thought I would never write again for the medium; yet I could not resist the opportunity of working again with Daedalus. The issue was how to compose another string quartet unrelated to the earlier cycle. The solution came from my solo cello piece There and Back Again (2010), which was based on a four-bar variation pattern from a 17th-century chaconne. Unlike the asymmetrical phrases and expanding variations of much of my music, the chaconne form requires symmetrical phrases and strictly periodic variations. I wished to work again with these symmetries but on a larger scale. Chaconne also differs in character and expression from the three-quartet cycle. The cycle is inward and intense, a kind of psychological excavation. Chaconne is, for the most part, transparent and playful. Many of its textures emerge from little canons, not completely unlike the rounds that children sing. Any composer who writes in chaconne form (one thinks above all of the last movement of Bach’s D minor violin partita and the finale of Brahms’s Fourth Symphony) is confronted with the challenge of how to create a larger form out of a constantly repeating pattern.
My Chaconne grows from paired antecedent-consequent phrases, each variation lasting eight bars. The 50 variations group into three large rotations, forming three arcs of tension and relaxation, with subtle parallel connections across the rotations. Notwithstanding my attraction to chaconne form, I purposefully disguised its symmetries and periodicities in order to build an overall dramatic shape. Fred Lerdahl/ Répertoire / Quatuor à Cordes

The expressive romantic melody of the Andante second movement is fully characteristic of the composer and resembles the song Silent Noon that he composed in the same year. The work was written in homage to the composer Juan Crisóstomo Arriaga, and at the same time as a token of gratitude and admiration for the Trio Arriaga, to whose members the work is dedicated; a double motivation that is reflected in the title of the work. Its course is presided over by a markedly lyrical character that coexists with passages full of energy, rhythmic vivacity and drama. The introduction and epilogue of the work are based on a musical motif derived from the name of the Basque composer (Ju-A-n C-r-I-S-ostomo A-rr-I-A-G-A), made up of the notes A, C, E, Eb, A, E, E, A, G, A, in the manner of a musical acrostic, and from whose nature the harmonic and thematic material of the whole work is largely derived. Suk faisait partie du quatuor jusqu'en 1933, se produisant dans près de quatre mille concerts.
Le Quatuor à cordes n o 1 en si bémol majeur op. 11 (1896) est la première composition aux côtés de l'op Serenade. 6, qui a été publié par Simrock à la suite de la médiation par Suk père-frère, Antonín Dvorák. Dvorák a examiné ce travail du jeune musicien à être 'le meilleur que je connaisse de lui.' Suk a réécrit le quatrième mouvement, vingt ans après son achèvement, parce qu'il n'était pas satisfait de la version originale. En dépit de son utilisation du même matériau thématique, la nouvelle version se distingue donc nettement que ce mouvement est souvent effectué sur lui-même.
La principale source de la forme originale du quatuor était la deuxième édition de Simrock. Pour la version alternative de la Finale de la présente édition est basée sur une partition et les parties marquées avec des corrections Suk.

On that day an individual repents for transgressions which may have occurred during the past year. Fasting and prayer are the activities which begin at sundown with the chanting of Kol Nidre and end twenty four hours later. I wrote the melodies for this piece on Yom Kippur, 1979. Part of the piece quotes the beginning strains of Hatikvah, the Israeli national anthem.

Par BACEWICZ GRAZYNA. Studying the sketches for works which a composer considers to be finished, perfected, is a fascinating activity. It enables one to penetrate the secrets of creative work, to compare the initial outline of a composition with its final version. A sketch is generally left untitled, but it does occur that a composer enhances the status of such a draft by giving it a title, before creating an improved version of that title on the basis of the finished work. The list of compositions by Grazyna Bacewicz, the full catalogue of which is held in the National Library in Warsaw, includes a work for string quartet entitled Quatuor. The manuscript was left undated, but analysis of the music allows us to date this work to the mid-1960s. In the composer?s output from that period, the instrumental tone colouring, often an element that helps to forge a work, takes on particular significance.
The first movement of the Quatuor [à cordes] opens with three fifth-tritone chords ?cast forth?, in succession, in saltando-gettato technique by the cello, second violin and first violin. When we look at the beginning of the Seventh String Quartet, from 1965, such a chord appears in the second bar of the cello part. Further comparisons lead to interesting conclusions. The two opening movements are almost identical, built from the same elements, only spatially arranged in a different way. In the structure of the first movement of the Seventh Quartet, one distinguishes two thematic planes, which shape the narrative after the fashion of a sonata allegro. The first theme is a series of episodes of changing texture ? from passagework to chords and short glissandos repeated with varying intensity. The second theme (Meno mosso) displays an imitative form. Both works feature an inverted reprise. For the first 25 bars of the second movement, a nostalgic Grave, the two works sound identical. The continuation of this movement in the Quatuor [à cordes] is more modest than in the analogous segments of the Seventh Quartet, in terms of both changing textures and the use of differentiated means of articulation. Towards the end, a motif from the beginning of this movement returns in modified form. Both the third movements (Capriccioso in the Quatuor [à cordes], Con vivezza in the Seventh Quartet) take the form of a rondo, and appearing in each of them is the same ?warbling? theme, based on scattered notes with grace notes. The Seventh String Quartet is in three movements. The presumed prototype consists of four movements. The last movement of the Quatuor [à cordes] is a Maestoso resembling a mine of textural ideas for other works of a sonoristic provenance from this period. The introduction, constituting a closed narrative whole and a reference point for the rest of the movement, is followed by segments that are dominated by ostinatos of various kinds, including with the use of harmonics, passages built on the progressive shifting of short motifs, and unevenly spread chords.
Grazyna Bacewicz used material from earlier works more than once in her compositions. Her oeuvre also includes ?twin? pieces merely scored for a different set of instruments. Yet the self-quotation that occurs in the case of the Quatuor [à cordes] and the Seventh String Quartet ? lengthy passages from another of her works reused with minor modifications ? is an unusual situation. It undermines the former?s status as an independent work.

The straddling of stylistic epochs is evident in the four-movement design of the quartet, which refers do Classical solutions established during the previous centrury also in other genres. Nethertheles, it is worth drawing attention to the third movement, the minuet, which represented something of a testing ground for contrasting tradition with progress, history with the present, and formal with frivolous, which these popular dances may have symbolised. Stylistic hanges heading towards Romanticism are evident also in the way the work's melodic layer is organise. The Józef Stefani's advanced compositional skills prove his crucial contribution to the evolution of the string quartet on Polish soil. La durée de vie de Josef Suk (1874-1935), le célèbre compositeur et violoniste professionnel, a été fortement influencé par son appartenance à la célèbre 'Quatuor tchèque' (fondée en 1892). Suk faisait partie du quatuor jusqu'en 1933, se produisant dans près de quatre mille concerts.Le Quatuor à cordes n o 1 en si bémol majeur op. 11 (1896) est la première composition aux côtés de l'op Serenade. 6, qui a été publié par Simrock à la suite de la médiation par Suk père-frère, Antonín Dvorák. Dvorák a examiné ce travail du jeune musicien à être 'le meilleur que je connaisse de lui.' Suk a réécrit le quatrième mouvement, vingt ans après son achèvement, parce qu'il n'était pas satisfait de la version originale. En dépit de son utilisation du même matériau thématique, la nouvelle version se distingue donc nettement que ce mouvement est souvent effectué sur lui-même.La principale source de la forme originale du quatuor était la deuxième édition de Simrock. In 1922 Maurice Ravel heard the young Hungarian violin virtuoso and niece of Joseph Joachim, Jelly D'Aranyi, in concert in London. Following the performance, Ravel spent the remainder of the evening requesting D'Aranyi to play numerous gypsy tunes on her violin, probing her on the technical limits of the instrument. The result of this encounter is Ravel's virtuoso classic 'Tzigane?. Written originally for violin and piano or luthéal (a mechanism invented in 1919 that attaches to a piano, producing a sound similar to the rich overtones of the Cimbalon), the premiere took place in London in April 1924. The composer had finished the work only days beforehand. Ravel later orchestrated 'Tzigane? and both versions remain a 'must? for music-lovers and aspiring violinists today. Jelly D'Aranyi performed both versions regularly throughout her long career. This Urtext edition presents the first scholarly-critical edition of Ravel's masterpiece. It is published both in the orchestral version, complete with full score and performance material, as well as in the composer's earlier version for violin and piano. All known sources, including letters, have been drawn on for the new edition - one of the available sources, consulted for the first time, was a copy of 'Tzigane? from the estate of Jelly D'Aranyi, which is today part of a private collection. The version for piano and violin contains, besides the Urtext part, a second violin part as a facsimile with performance instructions by Jelly D'Aranyi. D'Aranyi's alterations and fingering reflect how Ravel must have heard the work in rehearsals and performance and as such are a document of early 20th century performance practice. Among Vivaldi’s many flute and recorder concertos, two, both for transverse flute, were known until a few years ago only in incomplete form: RV 431 and 432. Both are written in the comfortable and expressive key of E minor, are transmitted inautograph manuscripts and lack their second movement (RV 432 also lacks its third movement). The seemingly enigmatic instruction “Grave sopra il libro” replacing the second movement has given rise to the most fanciful hypotheses. The discovery in Edinburgh, in 2010, of a concerto for transverse flute in D minor entitled “Il gran Mogol” suddenly shed light on the situation: this was an earlier version of RV 431, now complete with its middle movement, a “Larghetto” that is verypossibly identical with the one missing in RV 431. This “Gran Mogol”, which belonged to Robert Kerr, a Scottish nobleman and amateur flautist, was already known by name to scholars on account of its listing in an eighteenth-century catalogue as partof a set of Vivaldi concertos bearing geographical titles: more recently, there has come to light a letter written by Vivaldi three months before his death in which the composer describes this set in detail. It is very likely that RV 431 and RV 432belonged to this group of works, the last known collection of its kind in Vivaldi’s oeuvre.
