This Fantasia is founded on the following traditional English carols: The Truth Sent From Above (Herefordshire) words and tune; Come All You Worthy Gentlemen (Somerset) words and tune; On Christmas Night (Sussex) words and tune; There Is A Fountain (Herefordshire) tune only; together with fragments of other well-known carol tunes. The work is scored for ordinary full Orchestra with Organ and set of bells (ad lib. ), or String Orchestra with Organ or Piano. Alternatively, it may be accompanied by Organ or Piano alone, played from the Vocal score, with an optional solo Cello part (H212). A chorus part for performance bysolo Baritone and TTBB is also available (W41). The chorus is required to sing in four different ways: 1. Singing the words. 2. Singing with closed lips. 3. Singing 'Ah'. 4. Singing with half-closed lips i. e. with a short 'u' sound as in the word 'but'. Included in that lost treasure may have been a couple of cello concertos. Bach wrote six suites for cello and three sonatas for viola da gamba, so, yes, why not a cello or a gamba concerto? The poetry used in this setting of The Voices was presented to Dale Warland on the occasion of his final concert with the Dale Warland Singers by his friend, the poet Michael Dennis Browne. Dale writes, The art of choral singing has given my life great meaning and I hope to express that fulfillment through this music for mixed chorus and solo cello. Thierry Escaich : Night's birds - sur des textes de John Dowland Ch'urs à 4 voix mixtes et/ou piano/orgue et ensemble - Ch'urs mixtes Auteur : John Dowland Night's Birds, pour choeur et violoncelle, prend son inspiration dans deux chansons de John Dowland : Flow my tears et Can she excuse my wrongs, mais c'est avant tout l'atmosphère sombre et désespérée du premier poème qui guide l'évolution formelle de l''uvre. A plusieurs reprises, la rythmique plus légère, ternaire et syncopée de la seconde chanson (évoquant ce monde des passions et des luttes encore possibles) tente de s'imposer comme une sorte de souvenir à peine déformé de la version initiale de Dowland, mais à chaque fois c'est pour mieux retomber dans l'univers glaçant et sans espoir de Flow my tears, son lyrisme noir obsessionnel et ses enchevêtrements de lignes descendantes souvent chromatiques. Seule la fin laisse apparaître une sorte de sérénité mêlée d'abandon comme un chant venu d'au-delà des enfers. Le style polyphonique rappelle alors celui de la Renaissance anglaise et une musique plus diatonique conclut la pièce, à peine teintée de bribes éparses du climat précédent. Le violoncelle, après avoir été souvent intégré au discours vocal, ou avoir rivalisé avec les voix dans l'aspect déclamatoire (tel un double choeur) ou encore après avoir servi de base rythmique à l'ensemble, clôt la pièce par un chant éthéré et lent, comme une lueur dans ce nocturne tourmenté.
